06Q1
I woke up this morning and discovered I was eight feet tall. As a rather short person
who has always harboured dreams of playing in the National Basketball Association
this was a dream come true. My immediate problem was disentangling myself from
the narrow bunk bed that I was sleeping on. Since I had my own room I could calmly
ponder the excitement that lay ahead. My parents, of course, were in the master
bedroom oblivious of the good fortune that had befallen me. I was finally going to be
the basketball player that I had always dreamed of becoming. I hoped Yao Ming and I
could play for the Chinese side in an international basketball game.

My reverie was broken when my younger sister burst into my room. She stood
speechless as she saw my head in one part of the room and my feet all the way on the
other side. It was six a.m. and school was supposed to start at 8 oclock. I had
preparations to make but then my sisters wild scream made me panic as I realized for
the first time that what seemed to me like good fortune seemed like an aberration to
my sister. She pounded on my parents door, crying over and over, Mummy! Daddy!
Ping Ping Tang has become a giant!! My parents emerged from their rooms, looking
at me as if I was a Martian.

On my way to school I fully expected that I was going to be the center of attention.
Imagine my surprise when I realized that everybody on the street was either eight feet
tall or taller; in school, all activities went on as usual, almost as if nothing had
happened. And when I got back home I realized that my father was ten feet tall, my
sister eight feet tall and my mother nine feet tall. The fridge was empty.

You wont believe what a lovely time we had this past Saturday in celebrating Dads
birthday. We were on TV! Can you believe it? Winnie Chong of Star TV helped me
make the day a big, lovely surprise for Dad, one that he will never forget for the rest
of his life.
As you know, Dads favourite actress is Gong Li. My surprise was for Dad to meet
her.
We decided that we would make it a public spectacle. After all, the whole thing was
going to be on TV, so why not in the full glare of the public on Nathan Street?
On Dads birthday, I said I needed Mum and Dad to take me to Tsim Sha Tsui as I
needed to get a bag. Since Ive always been Daddys little girl (you are not jealous,
are you Shelley?) he could not exactly refuse. Anyway, while we were walking on
Nathan Street, a lady in dark goggles bumped into Dad. The bump was very hard and
Dad almost fell. Naturally, he flew into a rage! Dont you have eyes, Dad shouted,
staring at the drunken looking woman. Meanwhile, the cameras were rolling,
oblivious to Dad. The woman slowly removed her goggles and her scarf. My father
stood transfixed (as did Mum) as Gong Li stared lovingly into his eyes. His rage
melted like ice cream on a hot sunny day. G..gg..ggg Gong Li, he muttered. Im so
very sorry, Gong Li purred. Gong Li, how much I love you, Dad said. Cut, Ms
Chong said.
Dad has been talking even more about Gong Li even more since this incident and
Mum is not amused. The TV show came out excellent and Dad might already be
thinking about becoming an actor himself. He looked great on TV.
How are you doing by the way? Give us a call soon.

Your dear sister,

Nicky

I note with great pride the recent successes that the Chinese Aeronautics and Space
Administration has had with its space programmes. China has proven its place in the
world as a true centre of civilization and progress.
Chinese people need to draw ever closer so that we can prove to the
world not only how great we are as a people but also that we can be a force for good
in the world. To demonstrate that we stand for world solidarity we need to
demonstrate first of all that we have unity among ourselves. This means that no
Chinese territory or province should feel cut off from the elements of great
importance in Chinese scientific, technological, social, legal, or political life.
Since Hong Kong resumed part of China in 1997 from the British,
Hong Kongers have been demonstrating our loyalty and love for the Motherland by
looking for opportunities to draw ever closer to our Mainland brothers and sisters.
Having a Hong Konger in the space program will send a clear signal to all Chinese
that everyone matters in modern China.
My personal interest in space goes back to my kindergarten days. I
have followed program of CASAs space program very closely. I am healthy and have
a scientific turn of mind which I believe in important for astronauts.
In preparing myself for the selection and training process I recognize
that both physical and mental toughness are important. I have obtained the assistance
of a renowned Hong Kong physician and trainer to advise me on the proper training
regimen, which I hope to begin shortly. I have also been reviewing the proper
methods of conducting experiments so that this will become second nature to me. This
would help preparing me well if you require me to perform any experiments in space.

Experience Your 'Ideal Career'
The recent 'Working Week' scheme that allowed students to work in a number of
careers was eye-opening, at least for me. It allowed me to get to know myself better,
and I believe it has helped me make a better decision on my future career not a
restaurant cook!
As a great lover of food, I have always believed that the best place for me is the
kitchen. Therefore, at home, even as a young girl, I was never far from my mother's
apron, learning how to dice tomatoes, slice onions, and peel potatoes. For me though
the reward was in the delicious and appetizing dishes that my family enjoyed together
after several hours of toiling in the kitchen. However, cooking for my family of three
can hardly be a matter of toil; it was always a labour of love, which is why I believed
that being a cook was definitely my calling in life.
Under the arrangement of the 'Working Week' scheme, I was luckily assigned to
work as a chief trainee at Destino's Restaurant, a famous Italian restaurant in town.
After one week's working in this restaurant, I now have serious doubts that this is
the career I want to pursue. In my first two days, I spent most of the time in the food
preparation area, washing lettuce, stirring pots of cooking stock, and slicing cheese.
When finally I was allowed into the kitchen it was to help with the frying of chips,
fish that had been dipped in batter, and cheese fingers. The frying process itself was a
piece of cake but because of the high volume of orders at Destino's, it was impossible
to get even one second of rest! From the beginning of the shift to the end it was a
whirlwind of grabbing ingredients, frying, styling the food on the plates and making
sure that orders were not mixed up. With the stress levels so high, it was not unusual
for people to let slip a swear word or two.
Within three days of working at Destino's, I realized that there was a big
difference between cooking at home and cooking at a restaurant. Now that I know that
I do not like being stressed (around hot oil!). I have decided to look at other career
options. This experience afforded me through the 'Working Week' careers scheme.
I hope that all of you will not miss such a valuable chance if this scheme is to be
held next academic year again!

Dear Officer,
Music Festival at Wing-Wang-Wong Park
I note with great interest the efforts of your Department to bring quality leisure
activities to the people of Hong Kong. However, as a resident in a large public estate,
I would like to express some of my views concerning the venue selection of such
activities.
The proposed international pop music festival slated for the Wing-Wang-Wong
Park in Ma On Shan is just one example that shows your department's concern not
only for activities which appeal to older people but also those that attract young
people. While I cannot claim to be a senior citizen myself, I am sure it might interest
you to know that 60 percent of the people living near the Wing-Wang-Wong Park are
elderly people. In fact, there are three Old Age Homes within a stone's throw of the
park. It is unlikely that the majority of the elderly people would appreciate the kind of
head-banging music which some of the artists would perform at the festival. More
importantly, many of these elderly people go to bed fairly early and would be forced
to stay up when the festival gets into full swing.
I think that the space at the Wing-Wang-Wong Park lends itself to a
performance and can really accommodate a very large number of people. Considering
the kind of families surrounding the park, however, I doubt that a pop festival would
be ideal for the park. You are likely to draw larger numbers of enthusiastic fans from
the community if the music were something more along the lines of classical music or
traditional Chinese music; certainly anything that deprives the elderly residents of
their sleep and ruins their ears is unlikely to be given much enthusiastic welcome.
I have no doubt that a pop festival will be successful in the Wing-Wang-Wong
Park. What bothers me is the time that your Department will waste having to deal
with complaints from the elderly citizens and perhaps even law suits against your
Department once a few elderly people have had their ears ruined and their peaceful
lives shattered, if even just for a day!
Here's hoping you will give thoughtful consideration to the idea of having a pop
music festival at Wing-Wang-Wong Park; other more suitable places exist in Hong
Kong. A bit of careful consideration is all that is necessary to appreciate my point.
Yours faithfully,
R. Lee

The baby crocodile that Sammy's cousin had given him was getting too big to
keep in the bathroom. One day, Sammy came home from school and was horrified by
what he saw, a room turned upside down, and with his belongings strewn all over the
place. However, the most disturbing of all was that the baby crocodile was halfway
through the window, clearly on its way out!
Sammy took three giant strides towards the window, his intention of course
being to grab the baby crocodile before it fell onto the sidewalk below. What, after all,
would the people of Tong Kong Estate think seeing a baby crocodile on their streets!
By the time he reached the back of the building, there was a veritable racket as the
little crowd gathered around the baby crocodile, looking at the animal with a mixture
of fear and admiration.
One elderly man pulled out his belt and made his way towards the baby
crocodile. Sammy shouted for him to be careful, not for the man's own safety, but for
that of his beloved. Nevertheless, the elderly man was already on the baby crocodile's
tail, and the crocodile, having tasted the freedom of the streets below, was determined
not to end up in anybody's room. After thirty minutes of fruitless efforts to capture the
crocodile, the crowd had grown to about five times its size. By then, the crocodile was
hiding between some bushes but its eyes were on fire and nobody dared go any closer.
The animal had been cornered. As people debated on how to capture the baby
crocodile, Sammy stepped closer to his "baby" and called out its name "Maomao".
The crocodile let out a moaning sound, really a sound of delight. It slipped out from
between the hedges and Sammy jumped onto its back. As the two triumphantly made
their way boldly through the parting crowd, Sammy knew that in this moment he was
no less a celebrity like film maker, Wong Kar-wai or movie star Andy Lau. The
mixture of love and admiration from old and young alike made Sammy feel that this
was as just his moment as it was that of the crocodile. All those clutching stones and
sticks meant to beat the crocodile into submission now threw away their weapons in
shame. They realized that Maomao, rather than being persecuted for seeking freedom,
deserved commendation.
Suddenly, one wise elderly woman said, "If Hong Kong people want freedom
for themselves, why shouldn't a young crocodile also seek its happiness in freedom.
Animals do have their rights to seek freedom because we are all born free. All around
nodded in understanding. For many, such a sight as a young boy riding on the back of
a crocodile in broad daylight was too much. Moreover, the witnesses began to
understand the true meaning of freedom. Eventually, the police did come, but Tong
Kong Estate was never the same again.

A trip with Jackie Chan
Before the Easter holiday, I won a competition in a film magazine. I could go to
America with my favorite movie star- Jackie Chan from 17th April to 18th April.
I arrived at Washington on Friday night. The staff of the film magazine took me
to a famous hotel, Best Western Capitol Skyline. It was located at 10 I Street SW,
Washington D.C. After that, Jackie Chan and I had a delicious dinner in the hotels
restaurant. When I met Jackie Chan, I was very nervous and became tongue-tied.
However, he was very kind and made me relaxed. During dinner, I asked him the
history of American films and his unforgettable experience of the film, Who am I. He
answered all questions with good details and he always smiled. I thought that he must
be an optimistic gentle person.
Next day, we woke up late. After lunch, we reached a beautiful beach. The beach
was big and the sea was blue. While we were diving, we saw many kinds of fishes,
turtles, crabs Suddenly, the fishes went away and the sea was extremely quiet.
Jackie Chan and I hid behind a big rock. After one minute, we saw a shark. The length
of the shark was about one meter. It caught a big fish. It was very excited and I could
not imagine that the shark caught me as its prey. In fact, the beach was only a setting
to shoot a film. What I had seen were props.
In the afternoon, we arrived at the center of Washington and visited a large
museum. In the museum, there was an exhibition of Picas and discussed the
development of painting in Asia.
On Sunday mornings, Jackie Chan told me that he would give a big surprise. I
imagined that he would give me his films CD or the souvenirs of America. However,
he invited me to his friends party. In the party, I met Andy Lau, Gigi Leung and many
other pop stars. They were all my favorite stars. We were singing some Easters songs
and play games.
At last, I left America this afternoon when the party was over. I was extremely
high at the weekend. I made friends with famous stars and an exciting experience in
the sea. Besides, he liked to take photos with his fans very much and loved Hong
Kong very much. In the trip, he always encouraged me to work hard and helped Hong
Kong to shoot the local film. I hope that I will work hard and be a famous movie star
like Jackie Chan to improve the quality of local films.

04Q2
Do you think that you encounter many problems in school? Tonnes of homework,
loneliness, unfair treatment from teachersI think a number of students may worry
about their plight in school. In this essay, I will first discuss the problems of
homework and of having no one to talk to. Then, I will give solutions to them.
In secondary schools, students always have tonnes of homework. They have to
study at least eight subjects. They need to do homework till midnight nearly every day
because the subject teachers give homework to them. They are asked to complete
assignments within a day. They are under much pressure and they become
suffocated. The next day, they become lethargic in class. Therefore, they will miss
the key points in class..
In fact, too much homework is not good for students, but is no homework good for
students? I think that teachers should strike a good balance whenever they give
assignments to students. A suitable number of homework can let students reinforce
what we have learnt in class. Practice makes perfect. Homework is needed, but we
should consider the quantity, otherwise it may impose study pressure on students.
On top of having too much homework, many students feel lonely in school. Some of
the students are very shy to make friends. They are not lonely, and they cannot find
anyone with whom they share their feeling. Therefore, most of them are pessimistic.
They always go to the extreme to think of the dark side. They do not have a colorful
school life.
To solve the problem, we can help them by establishing a special department. This
department is to help students who are lonely. In addition, we can also build up a team,
similar to peer counselors. They can share their colorful school life with them or the
students can share their problems with the peers. The students can build up their
self-confidence again.
To conclude, problems that exist in our school life is inevitable. No pain, no
gain. I think suitable pressure can develop our personal potential in full swing. We
should make a good environment for students to study and have a school life.

04Q3
Dear aunt and uncle,
Hello! You were away at the weekend and asked me to look after my lonely
cousin, Chris. I am sorry to say that he was once lost but found after two hours.
My parents, Chris and I had in Tsuen Wan yesterday. After the meal, it was
already one oclock. My parents left us and went to BBQ with their friends. They
asked me to take good care of Chris. I am very sorry that I could not do it well.
After my parents had left, Chris suggested watching the film Pocket Monster.
Then we went to the cinema and bought the tickets in the box office. Chris asked me
for he tickets and put them in his blue small bag. The film would start after half an
hour. Therefore, we walked around in the shopping mall.
All of a sudden, Chris ran very fast and stopped outside a toy shop. He stood in
front of the window and looked at a red cap with a Pocket Monster logo. He loved
the cap very much. In order to please him, I bought the cap and give him as a gift. He
was ver happy and burst out laughing.
After that, we went to the playground on the top floor of the shopping mall. I told
Chris to play in the playground since I wanted to answer a call from my friend. We
chatted for about five minutes. However, I could not locate Chris after the call! I was
very frightened. What should I do? I phoned my parents and reported the loss of Chris.
My mother asked me to calm down and find Chris at once. Chris is just a six-year-old
child. I could not forgive myself if Chris came across danger.
I ran up and down in the shopping mall. I could not find him! The playground,
the toy shop, the cinema or the restaurant, I just could not find him. I asked the
passers-by if they saw a little boy wearing a red cap and carrying a blue bag. They
all shook their heads. I was disappointed. My father asked me to report to the police
station. Then I left the shopping mall.
I concentrated locating, to find a little boy wearing red cap and
carrying blue bag on the street. Suddenly, I found one. He was Chris. I ran towards
him and began crying. He looked very happy and took out a sweet. The girl in the
cinema gives it to me. Do you want it? Oh, he watched the film in the last two hours
and just went out from the cinema.
I had already asked him to not run away himself again. Please forgive my
carelessness. I will take good care of Chris next time.
Best wishes,
Chris

03Q1
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing in response to your question: Do you think your parents really understand you?
In recent years, my parents always argue with me. Usually, I think that they do not understand what I
am thinking about and misinterpret my intention. At puberty, I know that teenagers are more rebellious.
However, I think that the parents should concern about their children and avoid any senseless
arguments. In this letter, I am going to discuss the attitudes of parents towards young people.
Parents complain about the ways in which teenagers spend their money. In fact, teenagers love
trendy products like clothes, digital products etc. They also worship idols and will buy the related
magazines, photos or CDs. Therefore, they would spend a lot of money on their favorite items.
Sometimes, their parents would not know on what their children spend their money and worry about
their way of spending their money. However, parents do not know how to air their feelings. Instead,
they scold their children in order to forbid them to spend money.
In addition, parents also complain about teenagers staying out late with their friends. Teenagers
like to be with their peers. When they have argued with their parents, they will find their buddies. They
think that peers are more suitable than their parents for pouring out troubles. However, sometimes the
teenagers stay out late with friends and have not asked permission from the parents. Then, their parents
would worry about where their children had gone. When their children returned home, the parents
would scold them.
Apart from the aspects of spending money and staying out late, teenagers always spending so
much time on computer also directly triggers arguments with their parents. For me, I usually spend
three to four hours on the computer each day; however, my classmates usually spend over five hours on
the computer every day. In recent 10 years, computers technology has become more and more
advanced. Many families in Hong Kong have a computer. Most of them are also connected to the
Internet. So, teenagers have another way to kill time. However, the parents worry about their children
browsing the blue or violent web pages and it would affect their mentality adversely. It will make
teenagers eye sore when they read information from the monitor of the computer and reading in this
way may lead to the short sightedness. Thus, their parents should limit the time that their children
spend on using the computer although children may be disappointed with this restriction.
I, as a teenager, have also come across these kinds of problems. However, we should not always
complain about our parents. Instead, we should be considerate and try to put ourselves into our parents
shoes. In fact, we should have a better communication with our parents and share our feelings with
them in order to tighten our relationship.

Readers, can you share your view with me?

Yours faithfully,
C. Wong

03Q2
Setting up a new security system
Im writing to express my opinions towards the plan of setting up a new security
system in our school. Actually, I agree to this plan. But I think there are some
disadvantages of placing video cameras in all common areas. In this article, I will
examine the pros and cons of setting up a new security system at our school.
Setting up a new security system can minimize the number of thefts. School is
not a safe place to store up things. As we all know, there are thefts in our school every
month. Usually, the lost properties are very expensive objects, such as mobile phones,
books etc. One of my classmates even lost his school bag last month. Yet, placing
video cameras in all common areas can help safe-guard students personal belongings.
Thus, greedy students may not have chances to steal their fellows belongings.
Apart from thefts, setting up video cameras in classrooms can effectively
avoid cheating. Teachers assess students via tests and quizzes. However, many
students do not allocate time to revise and thus cheat in tests or quizzes. Undoubtedly,
this kind of misconduct is vile. Placing video cameras in classrooms can make
students think twice before cheating since their misbehavior can clearly be seen in the
recorded video- tape. In effect, the number of cases of cheating will be decreased
sharply.
There is the other side of the coin. Setting up a security system may cost a huge
amount of money since the system is expensive. In fact, our school should
allocate money to repair facilities, such as the washrooms, sports facilities, etc.
Moreover, our school should also spend the money on improving the computer
facilities. Take an example. Our school should spend more money on buying
useful software. Therefore, we can study more efficiently with the use of the software.
To conclude, the plan of setting up a new security system is good. But our
school should consider the money that they will spend on. I do hope that the new
security system can reduce the number of thefts and help the victims to catch the
thieves red-handed. .

03Q3

I cant believe! That must be a dream! I told myself surprisingly. When I opened
my eyes again, I was thrown to the winds. What I could feel were only trees, a lot of
trees! It was very dark here, I could not see my fingers. I could only heard birds
singing everywhere. Needless to say, it was a rainforest.

Yesterday I received a birthday present from my friend----a witch hat. My friend said,
This hat could bring you to different places. You can even use this hat to go to the
hell! Please remember, you should put it back into the box within 24 hours.
Therefore when I put on this hat, it brought me here---a rainforest! In my perception,
a rainforest was a dangerous place with lots of snakes, spiders and the natives.

Oh! My god! I have forgotten to bring along the box with me! I shouted. Suddenly,
I heard someone shouting back, KAKIYOU!! I looked around. Then I noticed a
native staring at me. I was shocked by his birthday suit, and the skeleton of a human
head, which was tied on his stick! I screamed and ran for my life. My hair stood on
end. Luckily, he didnt chase after me. Thank you god!

After sleeping for a while, the night was falling. Although I didnt want to walk
anymore, I heard someone singing. I went to see what had happened. All that I
could see were the natives forming a big circle, singing and dancing around a little
boy. Then a native killed him with a knife! I screamed at the top of the voice.
Everyone looked at me! The native pulled me into the center, and they started to sing
and dance again. I was frightened to death. I cried loudly until a native threw my hat
into the fire. Then I heard a sound, Beep, Beep The natives and the rainforest
were suddenly gone . I noticed that I was in my room. Didnt you think that it was so
unbelievable?

03Q1 Positive
5th May 2003
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to in response to your question Do you think your parents really understand you? In
fact, many teenagers nowadays are complaining about their parents. They claim that their parents do
not understand them and always deter them from doing everything. They cannot talk on phone, play
with computer, go on street etc. However, this problem has never happened to me. My parents really
understand me. I feel so lucky that I have such special parents. In this letter, I will take some examples
and describe my feeling about the attitudes of parents towards young people.
Frankly speaking, my parents agree me to play with the computer. They know that I can learn by
playing computer. Moreover, they believe that I have self-discipline. I can distinguish black from white.
They believe that I wont go astray due to making bad friends on the net. How do I gain trust from
them? In fact, to communicate with parents is crucial. Once my mother asked me how I could spend so
much time on computer and if I feel bored with it. At that time, I started to teach her how to use the
computer and the way to have fun with it. After several weeks, we played with the computer together.
Sometimes, when she discovered some new and interesting games, she will introduce them to me. It is
really enjoyable to play computer games with my mother. Consequently, whenever we want our parents
to understand what we are thinking, we should tell them.
Apart from playing computer, people nowadays want to keep up with the latest fashions
especially the teenagers including me. Nevertheless, the financial situations of most families now are
not good. We have not enough money to buy new clothes every day. As I was about 13, I was really
disappointed that my parent gave so little money to me for buying clothes as they thought that it was
not important for children to be fashionable. Yet, it seemed that there were more and more clothes I
could wear since I was 15. That was because my mother and I shared our clothes. Dont think that the
clothes are for adults. All of them are the latest fashions for teenagers instead. Yet, my mother dresses
like teenagers. From exchanging clothes with mom, the attitude of my mother is as same as mine i.e.
looking for latest fashions. I am really happy with it as I can be more fashionable and also save money.
All in all, parents dont want to deter us from doing the things, which we want to do actually, just
like my mother. In order to deal with the problems between our parents and us, we should talk with
them.

Readers, what do you think?

Yours faithfully
C. Wong

03Q1 Negative
5th May 2003
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to respond to the question: Do you think your parents really
understand you? I always have conflicts with my parents as I think they do not
understand me. They always ask on what I spend the money. They also do not know
why I spend a long time on the computer.
Parents complain about the way children spending the money on. Every teenager
spends money on his or her favourite. I am also a teenager, but why my parents
always do not allow me from buying the things I like? I am 16 years old now. I think I
have the ability to distinguish what I should buy and what I should not buy. However,
they always treat me like a child. They never think that I can handle it. Due to their
long working hours, they always do not have the time to talk with me. I think it is one
of the reasons for misunderstanding. My classmates also share the same problem with
me. If the parents can allocate more time to talk to us, the problem can be solved
easily.
Apart from spending money, parents also complain about our spending a lot of
time on using computers. Nowadays, computer is a very common learning tool; but
many parents still do not understand the important role of computer in their kids
learning processes in this electronic age. I always sit in front of the computer for
working or sometimes playing. Nevertheless, my parents do not have time to study or
even do not want to study the things about computer. As a result, they do not
understand what I am doing and think that I am always playing games! I think all the
parents should learn what computer is and learn how to use it so that they can have
more common topics to share with us and know what we are doing.
To conclude, I think the best way to make the parents understand teenagers is to
discuss with them more frequently. Then the parents will know what they want and
will not have any misunderstanding. Readers, what do you think?

Yours faithfully,

C.Wong

02Q1
Dear Sir /Madam,
I am writing to express my feelings about the government plan to spend millions of dollars on
Artificial Intelligence technology. In

this letter, I will also examine what might happen in the future

as a result of developing AI technology.

Robots can help manual work. Nowadays, most of the people have to work from nine to five or even
over night. However, if we spend money on developing AI technology, we need not work round the
clock anymore. As the robots can think like humans, they can replace most of the important positions
in government departments or private companies. Moreover, the robots wont get tired and thus can
work faster. Therefore, they can raise the work efficiency and productivity. In addition, they can
also help the career women or housewives to clean their places or even cook for them. Career women
always need to work and they dont have time to tidy up their houses. Robots will be their very good
helpers. Moreover, robots will attract housewives to buy them. With the help of the robots, they can
concentrate on taking care of their beloved children. This can help them lessen their workload.
Apart from robots, the computerized buildings and vehicles can also improve our livings. The
buildings are computerized the temperature can be regulated according to the surroundings with the use
of the sensors. We can also complete various tasks easily by just pressed a button on the computer.
How convenient it is! Besides, if we have to deal with some urgent matters which are far apart we
can get on the vehicles and then go there as soon as possible.
However, the developing of the AI technology will also cause some bad effects on humans. In the
future, people may become lazier and weaker. As they are over-dependent on the computers or robots.
They will rarely do things by themselves or do some exercise. Besides, more and more people may face
the problems of unemployment as the robots are stronger and cleverer. Thus, they can replace the
positions of humans, even humans will be controlled by robots. The most important problem is human
relationship will be worsened. They will only work on computer or talk to the robots instead of
communicating with others. Our world will become a cool one!
All in all, although developing the AI technology is very important to the world and can improve
our living, we should not over-dependent on the computer or robots. If we depend on them too much,
the robots may control the world. However, we can manage to manipulate the computers appropriately.
They will be very good helpers of human beings. We, human beings, should be the masters of the
world!
Yours faithfully,

Activities to improve public image of the police
In recent years, the public image of Hong Kong police force has been tarnished
because there has been conflicts between the public and the police, especially in the
clearing up the demonstrators who are seeking for the right of abode at Charter
Garden in late April. However, in my opinion, being a policeman is tough . In fact,
the collaboration between the police and citizens is very important. In this essay, I
will give some suggestions to let the public know more the work of the police force.
The work of the police should maintain the law and order in Hong Kong. In order to
make the public know their work, the police can organize a television show to
introduce the work of the police force. In the show, the ones who are eloquent should
introduce the work of different departments to the public in order to draw their
attention to the police. In addition, the show can narrate some cases to show what the
police force have done to the public. In light of solving different cases, the public may
think that policemen are heroic, and it will raise the image of the police.
Apart from having a television show, the police can make some regular programs
to introduce different types of criminal cases, which are prevalent in Hong Kong and
remind people not to be cheated. It will encourage people to collaborate with them
when people know the details of the criminal cases. Furthermore, they can also make
some advertisements to encourage people to call on them when they have problems
To raise the image of the police, the police can elect a policeman who has the best
performance in all aspects, especially the relationship with the public. He can
represent all policemen to contact the public actively and ask about their needs. I
believe that it can know more the work of police force and tighten the relationship
between the public and the police .
All in all, it is time for the police to improve its public image. The police is very
important to the public, and the public should respect them. I hope that various
activities can make the public have a better understanding of the police, and it can
make the public learn more about the work of police force.

02Q3
Dear Sandy,
You know, there is a vigorous struggle within me. To go or not to go to the party is
really very difficult to decide. On the one hand, I love you. However, on the other
hand, Pat loves you too. I am afraid that my going to the party with you will have a
negative impact on the relationship between Pat and I. Yet, I have decided to meet
you in the party.
I love you and I can no longer suppress my feeling towards you. I realized that I
did love you long before Pat told me his love towards you. We have been in the
same class for three years. Frankly, at the very beginning, I find nothing special in
you. However, as time goes by, I understand you better through holding class
activities, joining the camps. I discover that you are a cute, agreeable, responsible,
honest, hardworking and helpful girl. You know, someone falls in love with your
smile. And thats me! My feeling towards you is genuine. I am willing to be
with you for the rest of my life. I do love you and time will prove it.
I think I have to apologize for my not revealing my love to you. But you have to
understand that I was in a dilemma at that time. I was afraid that we could no longer
be friends if I disclosed my love to you. Later, Pat told me that he loved you. At
the moment, I could not unfold my feeling in front of you. I didnt want to hurt him.
I just didnt know what I had to do.
Yet, I now know that love is not a kind of obligation. Love is a mutual affection
between two persons. I am willing to take the first step to love. With no doubt, I
treasure my friendship with Pat. I love him. However, I love you even more. It is
so unfair to you if I now still try not to admit that I love you. But we have to handle
this matter very carefully so as not to hurt my dear friend. We should tell him
honestly and hope that he can understand us.
You are the one and only one girl whom I have ever loved. I am always right there
waiting for you.
Call me.

Dear Sir,
I am writing to complain about the amusement park that I visited last weekend. I
think that it was the most terrible day in my life when I was in the park. I hope you
will improve the parks facilities.
In the amusement park, the food is expensive. The hamburger is eighty dollars each
and soft drink is forty-five dollars. I think the price is high, isnt it? The cost of food
can allow me to have two meals in other restaurants. On 22 June 2002, there was no
staff in the food counter and only a notice wrote Please wait. I had nearly waited
for half an hour and was hungry. However, there was still no one to sell the food. I
was angry about this.
Apart from food counter, we only had a few games to play. Most of those exciting
games had been closed and only the silly spaceship and roller coaster could allow us
to play. As there were few games, I had to wait for an hour to buy a ticket to play.
Wasnt it too long for us to wait? Moreover, when I was watching others to play the
roller coaster, I saw someone standing up on it. However, the staff in the park thought
that it was not dangerous and didnt forbid that person to play. I was too disappointed
about the parks safety.
On top of games, the park was dirty. I could see nearly all the places were covered
with rubbish. Moreover, there was some bad smell emitting from the rubbish. Besides,
I fell down because of a banana skin. I think you should employ additional staff to
clean the ground regularly in order to provide a safe place for visitors.
All in all, I was extremely disappointed in the park. I hope you can employ more
staff in the parks and train them to provide the best service for visitors. Moreover, you
should build more games for us to play.
I hope you can deal with the problems as soon as possible!
Yours faithfully,
Chris Wong

01Q1
Oh! It is my forms biology examination paper. I thought and nearly screamed
out. What should I do then? I quickly thought of the ways that I could deal with it.
Place it back to the original position? Take it home? Or just have a quick look at
it? I thought. I really tried not to take it, but I really wanted to get a result with
flying color in the examination without studying round the clock. Therefore, I took a
copy of it and placed the paper back to the original position. Then I went home
quickly.
After going home, I first hid the copy under my bed. Then, I phoned my best friend,
Chris and told him what I had done. Thats great! Can you share it with me? he
asked. Then we need not have to study any more! But, is it wrong for us to do
such a kind of thing? I asked. Are you crazy? he asked angrily, You must give it
to me or I will tell our class-teacher! The only thing that I could do was to share the
copy with him and I did not have the time to think about whether it was right or
wrong. Chris and I studied the copy very hard before the examination. The
examination came very soon. When I was having the biology examination, I found
that all the questions were the same and I did it very fast as I had studied it many
times.

Finally, Chris and I really got 98% in the biology examination. However, I didnt
feel glad with this result because I was sorry for reading the question paper
beforehand . Throughout the day, , I was quite unhappy and thought all the thing over
and over and I should not do it any more. However, this was not really over yet, as
my mother has read my diary. I felt frightened and did not know what to do. My
mother was very angry and took me back to school the next day. I and Chris
received a severe punishment and had no mark for the biology examination.
This was a lesson for me. I knew that success was not measured by the
outcomes but the hurdles that I had jumped over. After this lesson, I would do my
own best to prepare for my examination and work hard. The most important thing is
that I wouldnt cheat any more.

12 August 2002
Dear Mary,
How are you getting on now? I have been in England for two weeks. . From this
trip, I have lots of unforgettable and new experience . Hey, have you missed me in
these two weeks?
This is my first time to leave for England. I find that the school life is completely
different from the way I studied in Hong Kong . I do not have to study from 8:30a.m.
to 3:30p.m., and I can choose my favorite subjects, English Literature, Creative
Writing and so on. The students knowledge on Literature is better than mine,
and most of them are very interested in these subjects . We can discuss literature
texts in a greater depth. You see, I enjoy study feminism, and I have already read
three texts in two weeks, such as Madame Bovery, Jude and Obscure, and Women in
Love. I follow the clue of a "new woman" in modernization. . Students are highly
motivated, and the discussions in class are very helpful. This makes me understand
the texts better. I am exposed to various cultures, and have a lot of chance to be
exposed to the native speakers of English. I seize chances to speak in class, to talk
to the people in the shops or whatever conditions that I came across. Definitely, my
spoken English improves, and this experience builds up my confidence in speaking in
front of others.
In this summer school, we have to share a room with three roommates. We are of the
same age . They chat with me friendlily. They always bring me happiness and new
experience. One of them comes from Singapore, and the other comes from Thailand.
We share the same objective: to learn English well. In our dialogues, we always
introduce our culture to one another. We bring me the famous sights and places in
Singapore and Thailand.. They make me think that I am one of them and
forget
my homesickness.
At last, I want to tell you that I have bought lots of presents to you and I had
taken lots of pictures with them. It is the most unforgettable trip in my life and I am
looking forward to share my experience to you when I come back .
Please send my warmest regards to your parents. Write to me soon!
Best Wishes
Chris

01Q3
Dear editor,
Last Sunday, I visited a zoo in China. I was disappointed to see the terrible
conditions in which the animals were kept and the way some of the visitors behaved.
Therefore, I am writing to complain about the terrible condition. In this letter, I
will show how to improve conditions in zoos, how visitors should treat animals in
zoos and alternatives to keeping animals.
I think that we should keep zoos clean. When I visited the zoo in China, I
found that there were a lot of rubbish in the cages . Some even emitted bad smell. I
think the animals who live in such a bad environment will become unhealthy; they
will become sick or dead. This will give a bad message to visitors, in turn, few
visitors will visit the zoo. The zoo will earn less revenue. They will close down. If the
zoo keeps the environment clean, more visitors will enjoy visiting in the zoo. This
will benefit both the zoo and visitors.
Visitors should treat animals well. When I visited the zoo in China, I found that
some visitors used a stick to bit a kangaroo and a visitor ride on an elephant back.
This can show that they mistreat animals. In another incident, I saw a tiger bike a
man. On the other hand, visitors should not feed the animals because they only eat a
particular type of food and they will beg visitors for food in the future, as they will no
longer be afraid of people.
Apart from keeping animals in caves, zoos in China can follow the way that
western countries keep animals. They can put the same kinds of animals, such as,
lions, tigers, in a forest rather than putting them in caves. This gives them more
opportunities to run and do what they want to do. This will make them healthier as
they can exercise themselves. Visitors can visit them by riding on a safe car which
they can be protected and can see the natural life of animals.
All in all, we should treat animals in a good way because animals are part of
nature. When we see animals, we will be relaxed and happy.
Yours faithfully,
Chris

Letter to a friend
10th May 2001
Dear Pat,
I have received your letter. I think your decision to go on a holiday with your
American friend is not a good one.
It is not difficult to understand why your parents are unhappy about your decision. I
dont know whether your friend is a boy or a girl, but I think going to Japan with him
or her is dangerous. If your friend is a girl, it will be a chance to visit Japan with her
only. You dont know much about Japan, do you? If you two get lost or meet anything
dangerous there, nobody can help you. Even if your American friend knows much
about Japan, two girls in such a big city is really dangerous.
On the other hand, if your friend is a boy, I suggest you not to go on holiday with him.
In fact, you have been connecting with him for three months only. Three months is
quite a short time; I suppose you do not know much about him. Even if you think that
you really understand him, you cant distinguish whether his words are true or false.
In fact, as you know, lying through the net is not a strange thing. Now and then, when
we read newspapers, there are some news about somebody goes out with a new net
friend, but all of them only have some unhappy experiences at last. Maybe I am too
sensitive, but as your friend, I do not want you to become another victim.
I think you can go on a holiday with your friend later. In fact, if he or she does
want to be your friend, he or she will not estrange from you when you cant go on a
holiday. Besides, there are many other ways to maintain friendship; visiting Japan is
not the only choice. Maybe you can invite him or her to Hong Kong. If so, I can
introduce Hong Kong to him with you together as well as your parents can meet your
new friend. This can reduce their worry indeed.
Anyway, whether go on the holiday or stay in Hong Kong is your own choice.
However, if I were you, I would avoid a situation which may be dangerous for me. I
think you should explain your situation to your parents and listen to them. If you
make a decision, please inform me.
Write to me if you have time.
Best Wishes,
Chris

01Q2 (A)
Having healthier life style is crucial. Only if we have healthy lifestyle, we can cope
with the routine life more efficiently and happily. Staying health and maintaining
good mental health are factors leading to success. Hong Kong students do not have
time to have exercise. In this essay, I will examine the reasons for Hong Kong
students not having enough exercise. Then I will give suggestions to students the way
to keep fit.
Hong Kong students are busy. As all we know, Hong Kong students are always
engaged with tasks. Most of them have to go to school for a whole day, usually from
8a.m. To 4 p.m. Some have to stay after school for extra-curricular activities, or for
tutorial classes or additional classes. They stay at school for about ten hours a day.
They will be exhausted after attending school for a day. They will go to sleep
immediately after school so as to grab more time to have rest. Thus, they can have
energy to cope with the routine school day the day after. They dont have time to do
exercise in the weekdays.
Yet, in the weekends, they enjoy going shopping with the family rather than playing
some sports. Doing exercise is always being regarded as hard work. Therefore, they
are not willing to spend time on it. Students are busy at preparing for their exams.
Owing to the exam oriented education system, students study round the clock so as to
get a bright result with flying color in the public examinations. In most students eyes,
study is of the top priority. They prefer spending more time on study than doing
exercise. Even they relax in the leisure time, they like to play computer games or surf
the Internet. As all we know, lacking exercise will make our organ not function
efficiently. The excess fat will be accumulated around the organs, say liver. The
chance of getting disease like heart attack will be higher than those who do exercise
regularly.
Students should spend about half an hour a day to do exercise. They can follow what
they learn in school, or try to play a sport that they like. After some time, they will
form a habit and joy doing exercise. They can be strong, and stay healthy.

On October 2, 2003, I went camping with a group of good friends at Shing Mun
Amusement Park. We were excited at the park. At first, the weather was sunny and
windy.
But suddenly, I saw cloud covering the sun, and then the sky became grey. We
ran away quickly because we knew that it would rain very soon. We had to change
our plan because it would rain on our way. We were not as happy as before at that
time because we didnt know where we should go. At last, we set a new plan and kept
on going.
When we had gone to the place where we wanted to go, the night had come.
But the weather had not changed. It was still raining. We could not make a fire in a
camp, so we couldnt cook food or take a rest. There was thunder and lighting. My
blood ran cold. We didnt want to sleep on the ground.
All of us couldnt sleep well because of the bed was not soft enough. We had
no food for dinner because we wanted to cook food with fire at first, but now we had
not any wood which was dry to burn.
It was dark in the park. We could not see anything clearly during the night.
Luckily, there were not any ghosts or wild animals..
After these two days, we had got a good experience. We were glad to get this
experience!

"How come, you are a robot? Am I dreaming? I was astonished, when I rushed into
Sandys room. I saw many wires, electrical circuits and computer chips on the floor.
I am a robot from Mars. I am happy to have a good friend, you. I cant stay in the
world anymore, as you know my secret. Bye! Sandy said, with her eyes filled with
tears, jumping out of a window and then disappeared.
Everything happened suddenly. Could anyone tell me what was happening? I was
shocked that Sandy was a robot. I thought of her every minute. I skipped meals and
could not sleep well .
Why do you hurt my daughter? Do you want to kill her? I wont forgive you. I want
to kill you. A cold, icy voice said and a tall silhouette began to appear, with a gun
pointing at my head. I wanted to run for my life but my legs just like pillars sticking
to the ground and sweat came out like a river.
Please, dont kill me! I can help you to do anything, but dont kill me. I stammered.
I startled and shivered involuntarily with my heart throbbing quickly.
I wont forgive you. He stared at me with the trigger of his pistol pulled, was going
to send me to my grave. My urge for survival told me that I had to do something. I ran
to my room as fast as I could
Father, stop that! Dont kill Chris. He is my good friend. He treats me as his younger
sister. He always takes care of me. He did not want to kill me. I have myself cut only.
Standing in front of me was Sandy, crying for mercy.
Chris, sorry! My father causes many troubles. Sandy apologized to me.
Can we be friends again? I dont want to lose a good friend like you! I said, with
tears running out from my eyes.
No, I cant stay in the world anymore. I have promised my father that if any human
beings know that I am a robot, I have to go back to Mars to live with him. I wont
forget you, bye! Sandy explained, and jumped out of the window with her father and
then they disappeared.
I wont forget you, too! I said, with my hand waved to say goodbye. I hope Sandy
could live happily in Mars.

00Q2
Dear Sir/Madam,
Hong Kong is an advanced and modern city. Advanced technology, especially computers, is widely
used in Hong Kong. Almost everyone of us possesses a computer at home. We can use it to visit
homepages, to play games or to chat with people all over the world. In this essay, I will examine the
pros and cons of using computers in school.
There are a number of advantages of using computers in school. First of all, learning will become
more interesting and have fun . Teachers can make use of the computers to teach. They can use some
software, e.g. Microsoft PowerPoint, to help them to teach. They can present their teaching by
PowerPoint instead of using only the monotonous talk and chalk. Learning will become more
interesting. This will help the students to grasp the idea and understand better. Students will be more
attentive in class. In turn, students will get better results in examinations. Moreover, teachers can make
use of the computers to print notes for their students. They can also upload the notes and other useful
information on to the school server, and let their students access them. This will help the students to
learn at their own pace.
In addition, some students do not have a computer at home. If computers are installed in their
schools, they can use the computers more often. They can use computers to do homework, e.g. type
their essay, look for information through the Internet for the projects.
Furthermore, computer is a mean of self-learning. The students can access information through
the Internet. They can find all kinds of useful materials through the Internet. Not only can they learn
from books, they can also learn more through the Internet.
There is the other side of the coin. One should not neglect the disadvantage of using computers in
school. The school has to spend a lump sum of money on installing computers and many other things.
Computer are expensive commodities, each computer cost at least ten thousand dollars. The school has
to buy quite a number of computers, about one million dollars. It is difficult for the school to raise one
million dollars. Besides financial problem, the school may have to install some technical machines, e.g.
projectors, which are very expensive. Nowadays, Hong Kongs economy is at the period of recession,
money becomes a large obstacle to schools which want to install computers. Moreover, the school may
need a lot of space to install computers. This is a problem for the schools which areas are small.
Whats more, some students may abuse the use of computers and neglect their study. They use
the computer to play games, to chat whenever they are free. As a result, their academic result becomes
very poor. All in all, computers are very useful in this modern world. We can do a lot of things with
the help of computers. The advantages of using computers in school can outweigh the disadvantages.
We can find some solutions to the problems, e.g. the government can subsidize the information
technology schools in buying computers. I hope the problems will be solved in the future.

14th May, 2001
Dear Pat,
Im glad to receive your letter. How are you getting on? Im excited over your
planning to return to Hong Kong as we have not met each other for about five months.
There are usually difficult to find a summer job in Hong Kong. Since many students
who are of form five or form seven standard have been sit for the HKCEE and A-level
examination respectively, they then have a long holiday. Some of them may also look
for a summer job. This leads to a high demand for a part time job. In fact, when you
return to Hong Kong during the summer holiday, I think it will be too late. However,
if you really want to look for a summer job in Hong Kong, I can give you a hand. I
think you should find a summer job that you are interested in. If you find the job that
you dont like, you will then feel bored and have no incentive to do the job. On the
other hand, the jobs, which need much energy are not suitable for you. As you are
only students, you also seem not to do much exercise in your leisure time. It will be
difficult for you to do that. Anyway, you should find the job that you like.
Apart from choosing a job that is suitable for yourself, you should also know how to
write an application letter as well. Usually, there may be an interview. During the
interview, you should give a good impression to the interviewers. You should speak
up so that the people who interview you can hear what you say clearly. If you have a
question, you can phone to the relevant company for clear information.
As a matter of fact, some companies may cheat people, especially in the period
that many people look for a job. The companies may say that there will be a high
salary if you apply for the job at once. In fact, they may think of many traps in order
to cheat people who are the first time to look for the job. So, dont believe all
information of the companies easily. Futhermore, you can apply for the job with the
help of your parents.
It is difficult to find a summer job in Hong Kong. If you work, I think you can
look for the one that you are interested in. I hope these suggestions can help you.
Write to me soon.
Best Wishes
Chris

99Q3
Last Friday night was the most terrible night that I have ever had. That

day, Benny, Katy and me went shopping

in a new-built department store. We were amazed by the large size of the department store. It is hard for us to visit
each stage of it. Therefore Benny suggested making a joke. He told us to hide inside the department store and stay
there overnight. Katy and me certainly agreed with what Benny had suggested.

The night

the department store was about to close at 11p.m.. We quickly hid ourselves behind the dummies on

the third floor, which was for selling fashion. We stayed behind the dummies and waited until all of them had left.
Fortunately no one had found us. After all the staffs had left, we had made a joke successfully! We yelled for
happiness and looked around. All of a sudden, we found something really terrible!

First we heard some strange noise came from the dummies. Katy and me immediately turned back and were about
to run away. However we heard Benny yelled for help. Then we returned and saw one of the dummies grabbed
Bennys shoulders. The other dummies were approaching to us. Their mouths were moving and they stared at us.
Katy quickly grabbed Bennys arm and told us to escape.

We ran as fast as we could

and we walked downstairs. The lower stage was a toy center. We walked quietly and

wanted to find a safe place to hide ourselves. We bended our back in order not to be hurt by the things. Suddenly a
toy plane crashed towards me and luckily I could bend my back in time and prevented to be hit by it. Not only the
toy plane moves, the entire toy tankettes, cars and models cam towards us and were ready to attack us! One the toy
cars rushed towards Benny and made him to fall. The toy tankettes shot me with plastic ballets. I was scared and
grabbed Katy and shouted for help. Then Benny told us to rush to the art gallery

We rushed to the art gallery and searched for the exit. We walked on our toes and quietly.

The art gallery was dark and we barely saw our fingers. We passed the paints and we heard some noise. We found
that one of the paints was moving. The knight inside was trying to get out of the paints. The knight was using the
sword and wanted to attack Katy. Benny used his hand grabbed the knights sword and threw away it. Then we
escaped to the stage of selling books. Benny walked in front of Katy and me. He led us and protected us. Suddenly
the books of the best sellers shelves flied and rushed towards us. Benny used his back to protect me and he pushed
me. The books continued attacking us and we ran for our lives. It seemed everything was trying to attack us!

We ran for a long time until we found the way to avoid those terror attack. We finally stopped at the food stage.
There was no more attacking and was in peace. We were terribly tired and exhausted. Therefore we decided to take
a snap on the chairs and waited for the dawn. After sleeping for several hours, I woke up and told Benny and Katy
to leave. We sneaked to the exit and found the department store was opened.

We quickly ran way and wouldnt try to go inside the department store again. The night spent in the department
store was the worst day I have ever had. I decided not to visit there again in my forthcoming future.

The relentless mass media
The tragedy of our Princess Diana has raised our concern of the attitude of the
paparazzi. On the one hand, many people think the paparazzi should not be blamed as
they were just implementing their duties. On the other hand, many people oppose to
what they had done. In this essay, I will argue the mass media infringe privacy.
I totally disagree with the approach of the paparazzi. Their ways of reporting news are
really disgusting. They always dog their targets in order to reveal the celebrities
privacy. Their targets include sports personalities, movie stars and other famous
people. They try to find out their marital status, secrets and other shocking news,
even they make up stories so as to boost the sales of their tabloids and magazines.
They infringe ones privacy relentlessly and many celebrities become victims. For
instance, the death of our Princess Diana, is a concrete example. According to the
statements of the witnesses, it seems that the driver lost control of the car while trying
to speed away from the pursing photographers. Who were the murderers of Diana,
her boy friend Dodi al-Fayed and the driver? Undoubtedly the paparazzi!
Although the lives of many celebrities are badly affected by the paparazzi, some
people appreciate with what the paparazzi have done. They think the paparazzi and
the other reporters have devoted their concerted effort to report the latest news. They
may argue that the tragedy of Diana was merely an isolated case; they should not be
guilty of provoking the crash. But in fact, this incident reflects the problems. I am sure
all of us are curious about others privacy but no one would like his/her secrets to be
revealed. Do you want others to keep an eye on you round the clock?
In order to deal with this issue, the general public can give a hand. We should not
buy any newspaper or magazines which aim at infringing others privacy. The sale is
an index of the popularity of magazines. The press incentives of revealing others
private life will be lowered if the sales diminish. On top of this potent measure, the
government should enforce stringent regulations to preserve our privacy. Fine should
be imposed onto those who infringe ones privacy without his/her consent. All these
can deter the reporters from exposing others privacy and we can surely gain benefits
from it.
All in all, everyones privacy should be preserved. We should join forces with the
government in order to monitor the mass media. I hope the tragedy of Diana will no
longer happen.

The naughtiest thing
This morning, I went to school on foot with my friend as usual. The weather was fine.
I was very happy because I met my primary school teacher, Miss Lok. When I arrived
at school, I said Good morning to all my teachers and my classmates. One of my
schoolmates, May, brought a very beautiful Hello Kitty who was wearing a pink dress
that cost $ 150. She showed her Hello Kitty to us. We loved it and praised it, as it was
very cute. I liked it very much. I saw it before in the Kalms when I was going
shopping with my parents. I begged them to buy one, but they declined. I did not have
enough money to buy one and I felt very unhappy.
During the lesson, I could not pay attention to what the teachers had said. At
lunchtime, when all students went to have lunch, I came back to the classroom. I
looked around carefully and ensured that nobody was in the classroom. Then, I
walked to Mays seat. I stole Mays Hello Kitty and put it into my bag. At that time, I
felt very happy and I shouted loudly "the Hello Kitty is mine.
After lunch, May came back to school with her friend. When she went back to her
seat, she discovered that she lost her beautiful Hello Kitty. She screamed loudly and
asked who stole my Hello Kitty? She could not control herself but cried loudly. At
that time, the classroom was in silence and none of our classmates answered her. She
felt very disappointed and went to the staff room to report her loss of the Hello Kitty
to Miss Chan, our class teacher.
Miss Chan was very angry because it was a theft. I was in great fear and I shuddered
in the corner of the classroom. I didnt know what to do. I thought for a while. At that
time, I wanted to hide myself, but I couldnt because I throbbed. I intended to escape
from the punishment, but I could not because I was blaming myself for being a thief.
Therefore, I told the truth to Miss Chan directly. She asked me why do you steal
Mays Hello Kitty? and replied I do not like her bragging about her Hello Kitty.
Moreover, I love to have one myself.
At the end, Miss Chan punished me by deducting five conduct marks from me. I
apologized to May and promised not to steal again.

We are now at the end of the twentieth century. As it is a precious moment in our life
that we can come across the twenty-first century, the 2000, we are going to celebrate
its coming. In this essay, Im going to outline to the time of the party, who will be
involved in the party, the venue and the way to organize the party.
First of all, we have to decide the date that we are going to hold the party. In my
opinion, the last day of the 20th century, 31.12.99, would be the best. This is the
historical moment and there will be a better atmosphere. Irrefutably, I would like to
hold a party at about 10:00pm till mid-night as we can witness the arrival of 21th
century together.
Apart from time, who would be involved in our party? Besides the organizers and
their relatives or friends, we may sell tickets to students. It is open to all students and
there will be no upper limit of the number of tickets soldin turn, students may invite
their friends and relatives to join.
Furthermore, we could book a bar or restaurant as our venue, as the sales of tickets
would cover our expenses. There will be a television in the bar or restaurant that is
available for us to view the scene of other places around Hong Kong. We should
choose a bar or restaurant which is near the Kwai Fong MTR station as most students
go back home soon when the party is over.
On top of these, we are going to hold a party that is full of On top of these, we are
going to hold a party that is full of joy. We should organise some group games
for participants to have fun some group games for participants to have fun and
break the ice between one another, for instance, we may have some lucky draws or
karaoke competition. In addition, the price of the tickets should be from $100 to $200
and included a ee drink. Moreover, we should provide them with some pop-music to
let them dance and sing freely.
All in all, as it is a valuable moment that we can share as we are a part of the whole
world. It is worth organizing such a party. We should make a good plan in order to
provide guests with a joyful and memorial party.

97Q1
Letter of Reply: A Desperate Form 4 Student
Dear a desperate Form 4 student,
From your letter, I understand

what you have puzzled.

Is your living with no privacy at all? But, do you ask your parents for it? You can
discuss your problem with your family members to see if there is a compromise. You
can talk with your classmate through phones in the toilet. Toilet is one of the private
places. No one can disturb you and hear what you say. You can tell your friends at
what time they can phone you. It reduces the risk of your family to hear what you say.
Crowded and noisy situations can affect your study. I think you can go to the library.
Library is a quiet place. You can go there and have your study. It usually opens from
eight in the morning to eight in the evening. I advice you not to do your homework at
midnight. Midnight is the time that you have to take a rest, i.e. sleep. Without
sufficient sleep, you have no energy to learn at school. I think you often doze or
daydream at school. This not only affects your studies, but also affects your health.
Relaxing with your friends is good. If you havent enough money to play with them,
you can borrow it from your parents. However, many students use this pretext to
commit crimes. I hope you dont.
I always think about the schooldays in the past. Although I had to do much homework,
the time in schools is the happiest. I could play and work with my friends. We had
lunchboxes in lunch hour together and talked about jokes. When I was placed in an
embarrassing situation, my friends tried to give me a hand. But, now, I have to worry
about jobs, parents, fares, my work, etc. So, dont give up your studies. Moreover, in
this cosmopolitan city, your academic qualification is important. You have to study at
school in order to get a good job in future. It may be difficult to make you understand.
But, I tell you the truth. I hope you can understand in future.
I hope your problems would be solved by measures. Please feel free to ask any
questions.
Yours faithfully,
NICK

I am writing to propose inter-school activities. We want to improve communication
between our school and the other schools. With good communication among students,
they can share their experience openly. Through inter-school activities, students
enlarge their social circle.
We are going to have an inter-school picnic. Last month, we conducted a survey,
`How many friends do you have?' The figure shows that about seventy-five percent of
students have few close friends, or even they have none. Whenever they have
problems, they do not have their peers to share with. Therefore, we plan this picnic to
help them to meet more friends. They can communicate with the students from other
schools more easily. Hence, their life may become colorful!
Apart from planning a picnic, we are also planning a computer link-up. Nowadays,
computer is part of our life. I know that our schoolmates are interested in using
computer. From the recent figure released by the Extra-curricular Activities
Department in our school, the most popular club is the Computer Club. In this
computer link-up, students can learn their experience from this program. If they are
not good at using computer, they can learn from others. Under this link up, they can
also meet friends by communicating with one another with other schools. Therefore, I
recommend this as one of the activities.
Just two activities are not enough to improve the communication with other schools.
Therefore, we are going to plan a charity walk. Two years ago, our school held a
fund-raising walk to improve the facilities of our school library. It was satisfactory
that there were many students supporting this fund-raising. It is the reason for holding
the charity walk. I think the route of the walk is from Wanchai to Victoria Park via
Times Square and it would be held on a Sunday. The money raised from the walk will
be all donated to the Tung Wah Groups of Hospitals. Furthermore, we can meet
friends during this walk and enlarge our social circle.
All in all, it is very important to improve communication among schools. We can
exchange our academic experience by communicating with other schools. I hope these
three activities improve the communication among schools.

One day, I fell asleep on the MTR and when I woke up, the train was empty. I got
off the train, ran out of the station and saw that all the streets and buildings were
empty too. I couldn't see anybody at all. I was very frightened at that moment because
I didn't know what had happened.

Suddenly, I heard someone saying in the station. But when I returned to the station,
nobody was there. Then I ran out of the station. `Welcome to the Devil's City.'
someone replied. Suddenly, I saw a black body coming to me in a great speed and it
caught me. `Why do you catch me? Where do you go?' I asked. But he didn't reply me
and gave me some drinks. I fell asleep after having the drinks.
When I woke up, I was in a small dark room. I didn't know why the black body
caught me to the dark room. Then I saw a man wearing a black T-shirt, black trousers
and a pair of black shoes. He came to me and said, `Have your dinner'. `Where am
I?' I asked him, but I got no reply. Then I had dinner. I also fell asleep after the meal. I
thought that the food might contain some sleeping pills.
When I woke up, I was locked up in a cell. `Welcome to the Devil's City.' a man said.
I saw a group of black body coming to me. `Sir, do we kill him? ' They asked the man
who wore a red T-shirt. `OK! You kill him' he said. Finally, I died.
`Wake up. Son. We arrived at Tsuen Wan Terminal.' my mother said. I told my dream
to my mother but she didn't believe me. I think I should not fall asleep in the MTR
compartment, otherwise, I may have to go the Devil's City again.

Dear Sir,
I am writing to complain about the service of Lucky Choice Seafood Restaurant, and I
discourage all of you from visiting there. Let me share my unhappy experience.
Last Sunday (1 Sept 96) was my best friends, Mary's, birthday. To celebrate with her,
I went to the restaurant to have dinner at 7:30p.m. However, after my first visit to the
restaurant, I think that I would not go to the restaurant again.
When I entered the restaurant, I looked for a table myself. I was surprised that all the
tables nearby were empty. There were dirty cups and dishes on them. At last, I found
a clean one.
We had waited for about fifteen minutes without being served. I called one of the
waiters, but no one answered me. When we were about to leave, a waiter came to
serve. He promoted some shrimps, crabs and fishes to us, and we made an order at
that time. We ordered a seafood soup, a steamed fresh groupa, and steamed garlic
prawn. After giving the order, I saw some fishes dying in the aquarium; the dead
bodies even floated on the water.
When I was waiting for the food, I saw a cook smoking while he was seasoning a fish
with ginger, oil, salt and soy sauce. He used his hands not teaspoons to gauge the
amount of salt . His fingers were brown in color, full of the smell of nicotine. This
made me lose my appetite.
While I was eating, I found cockroaches and mice running around the restaurant. The
food was tasteless. The fish was not fresh: its texture was loose. The soup had turned
sour. I found a cockroach in my bowl of rice. I felt sick.
I was so angry that I complained to a waiter. The waiter did not answer me. I further
complained about the case to the manager, but the manager said. ` If you don't like the
food, get out!'. Therefore, I paid the bill angrily and left the restaurant at once!
I disclose my visit and hope all of you make a right choice.
Yours truly,
L.Tse

95Q1
10th October, 95

Dear sir/madam,

I am writing in response to the letter dated 8th October, 1995, entitled "Ban Portable Phone" by S. Tam

Although I agree that the bleeping of pagers or the ringing of the portable phones always disturbs us, I strongly
disagree that the government should ban the use of pagers and mobile phones in public places.
I am glad that smoking has been banned in public places in Hong Kong recently. However, smokers still
smoke in the public areas. As we know, smoking leads to lung cancer. About one third of the smokers died
because of it. Besides, smoking also affects the second-hand smokers' health. Therefore, the government should set
up more laws to control the smokers. However, pagers and portable phones are not parallel to smoking.
Pagers and portable phones can help people, like businessmen, to communicate with one another. It is
convenient. We can contact one another through phones. In fact, mobile phones can help busy executives not to
spend too much time to stay at the office because much of their instructions or communication can be done on the
phones or pagers when they travel.
Therefore, they can shorten the time of face-to-face contact to have another negotiation. However, if the
government ban the use of the portable phones and pagers in public places, it's so inconvenient that everyone needs
to queue up for a long time to use the phone when they are in the streets.
As far as economy is concerned, since the portable phones and pagers can be defined as ancillary to trade, it
helps to promote the GDP indirectly. If the government bans these 'tools', the companies that provide these
services will close down. Thus, many labors will be unemployed. As the number of unemployed workers increases,
their cost of living decreases. Therefore, if this situation continues; the cost of living in Hong Kong lowers,
everyone reduces their total expenditure. As a result, the GDP of Hong Kong will become worse and worse. The
balance of payment will also become unfavorable.
In society, if the businessmen cannot have their negotiation at their offices, many traders go here and there
to have the meeting. The financial centers such as Central and Tsim Sha Tsui will become overcrowded. There
will be lack of public facilities; traffic jams will occur. Many people want the government to ban the use of
portable phones and pagers in public places because of their noise. However, do they think after the ban, the noise
pollution will be more serious? It is because most of the traders go outside to have their negotiation. I am sure that
the sound pollution will not be less, but more serious!
All in all, I don't think it is necessary to ban the use of portable phones and pagers in public places as they
are convenient, but the government should encourage the users to lower the volume of the ringing or bleeping. If
possible, the ringing should be `vibrating'. Don't ban the portable phones and pagers! We need them!

Yours faithfully,

Chris

Shoplifting
Last Saturday, my mother asked me to go to the ACME Supermarket to buy a bag of
rice. When I entered the supermarket, I felt that there were some other people behind
me. They also went into the supermarket. Out of curiosity, I turned around to see
whether there were people behind me or not. With luck, I was right. There were a boy
and a girl behind me. Moreover, I recognized they were students of my school and
were studying in form five. However, I didn't know them. So, I went straight into the
supermarket without saying 'Hi'.
After I had taken a bag of rice from the shelf, I saw that the two youngsters whom I
had met earlier were looking around. They looked nervous. Hence, I looked at them
from behind the shelf. Suddenly, the boy who was about sixteen years old wearing a
jacket put a box of chocolate into the pocket. The girl who had short hair bringing a
bag put a bottle of drink into her bag. Then, they walked quickly as if they were about
to leave the supermarket without paying for the goods.

At that moment, a manager of the supermarket was standing in front of them. He then
said, "Excuse me, our surveillance camera recorded that some of our goods were
taken by you without being paid. May I have a look in your bag and jacket?"
Suddenly, there was silence in the supermarket. All the customers and staff stopped
talking and wanted to know what had happened. Moreover, the manager finally found
the unpaid goods, he said seriously to them, "Do you know shoplifting is a crime?"
The two teenagers regretted and cried, "We are very sorry. Could you give us one
more chance? We will never do it again, please don't call the police!"
Finally, the manager asked them to pay the goods and let them go.

To win a study year oversea
I am bored to study in Hong Kong. I just listen to teachers and jot down notes
continuously. I do not have any time to think about the information given by the
teacher and even read through the notes once! What an education is! Therefore, I
would like to study overseas to learn what I want to learn.
There are many countries in the world. However, there is only one place that attracts
me to study - Vienna in Austria.
Vienna is also known as the City of Music. Everything such as trees, flowers and
streams, is full of music. It is great and comfortable to study. Hong Kong is a very
crowded city. But Vienna is definitely not! Living in Vienna helps me refresh to
review my studies. Additionally, my friend, Louis, is living there, so she will look
after me.
During the year overseas, I would like to study the traditional culture and music in the
Vienna Music Institution. I would like to be a famous pianist. I want to learn more
theories of music in order to compose many songs to children in the future. Do you
think it is meaningful?
Communication is very important, especially in a foreign country. It may be difficult
for me to communicate with the native speakers. Although I am quite good at
English, I cannot speak English fluently. Besides, I need to wear a fur coat even it is
slightly below 16C. Therefore, living in Vienna in winter is a challenge to me because
its temperature is often around 5C in winter. Furthermore, I may feel lonely because
all my family members are in Hong Kong. In order to solve this problem, I always
speak English to practise my speaking skill. I do exercises to consolidate what I have
learned. I would bring a photo with all my family members to Vienna to think that
they are around me. I learn how to look after myself from now on.
Only students with sounded academic knowledge can study overseas. As I am always
the first or the second in class, I can cope with the pressure from texts and tests. If I
win the competition, I will share my experience and the culture in Vienna with Hong
Kong citizens. I will also spread our culture in Vienna.
All in all, I think I have strong potential to win a study year overseas. I do hope I
would be a lucky one to win the prize.

Clear up the misunderstanding of pop stars and film stars
Dear sir/madam,
I am writing in response to the view that pop stars and films stars do not contribute to society at
all. I absolutely disagree with this naive idea. In this article, I will outline their contribution of
them to you.
Nowadays, many celebrities and pop stars are blamed that they are naive and have no
benefits to society. They just work to earn a living. Besides, teenagers are susceptible to their
performance. For example, when some film stars act as poor guys in their films and need to swear
or smoke, the immature teenagers will just follow suit to imitate their misbehaviour in the film. Do
stars really need to bear the consequence?
In fact, the stars just act in the film. They act very well as poor guys; these are just their roles.
Only if the immature teenagers are so naive that they cant distinguish between the real world and
the unreal world of the stars. Hence, it is not the faults of the pop stars and film stars, but the
immature teenagers themselves. The pop stars are devoted to their work, putting all their efforts
into their work that theyve always got no time to have a lunch box! Whats more, they also
participate in some courses to learn some skills to contribute to their work like singing course.
Their devotion to their work is shown. .
Apart from their devotion to their career, they perform in charity shows. When there is a
show that is related to charity, they will put their work aside for the time being and go to
participate in the shows to raise the concern of public to donate money to the needy without being
paid money! They are willing to help the poor. They simply want to use as much their efforts as to
give a helping hand. They also donate their money to the charity centre in order to build more
facilities to the needy. Sometimes, they also visit some voluntary centres, such as Caritas Centre,
to clean and repaint the centre. Then, how can we say that they have no contribution to society?
On top of that, the pop stars products, such as CDs, also helps to boost up the economy.
How? When their fans buy their CDs, the consumers consumption increases and this in turn,
stimulate the economy. Better still, once people listen to their songs or watch their movies, they
can alleviate their stress. They have contributed to society much!
All in all, what we have to do is to identify the good aspects of them and learn from them,
regardless the bad ones. Merely blaming them is worthless and people should not get addicted to
what the idols do.
Yours faithfully,
Chris Wong

An Unforgettable Experience
Last month, Mr. Chan, the head master of our school's general education unit introduced
me to join a camp which trained the leadership skills during this summer holiday. I enjoyed it!
Our school also got five students to join the camp with me altogether. On the first day of
the camp, our instructor divided us into three groups, gold, silver and diamond. Each
instructor guided one group. Our instructor, Mr. Lo, told us that we should have a group
leader. In order to give everyone a chance to be a leader, we have to take turns to be a group
leader.
The first activity of the camp was hiking and I was elected to be the group leader of the
day. As the route selected by our instructor was of a high difficulty level and our group
members were made up of many girls, I had to consider their physical ability. We had to
climb up Tai Mo Shan, which is 982 metres in height. The slope was very steep and the paths
were rugged. Some girls claimed that they could not climb up to the top of the hill. They were
afraid to face such a challenge and thought they would fall down the hill while they were
half-way upto the hilltop. So I suggested that they hold the hands of one another to climb up
the hill one step at a time. Finally, our group had arrived at the hilltop successfully. All of us
were happy to see the spectacular scenery of Tsuen Wan. At that time, we all get the sense of
achievement!
From the activity, I learnt we should be considerate and willing to help one another. If
we were not in one spirit, we wouldn't succeed.
Another camp activity that I joined was problem solving. Our instructor asked us if we knew
the objective of taking part in this 5-day leadership training camp. What kind of skills and
experience did we expected to gain? At first, all of the group members just kept silent and
looked at one another. Most of them did not know why they joined the training camp. I tried
to lead them to think about the main objective of the programs. I told them that organizing an
activity should reach certain objectives. We should think of them seriously.
At last, we reached a conclusion. All of us were interested in learning leadership skills
and challenge themselves. One of the members also said that he wanted to build up his
strength, and be strong in character. I thought it was a good point!
In this section, I had learnt that being a good leader should be helpful and responsible.
Moreover, a leader should lead the others to the way of success.
All in all, this training camp gave me a great experience in my life. I have not only learnt
leadership skills and how to think of one another, but also improved my English speaking and
listening skills because some group members and instructors are native speakers of English.

Dating before eighteen
I am writing in response to P.So that teenagers should not start dating before they are 18.
Maybe most of the young students have experienced their unforgettable romantic stors while
they are studying. We find them holding hands and kissing in the public. I fully support Sos
argument because below 18 is not regarded as an adult by law. They should pay more
attention to their schoolwork.
Teenagers below 18 are still studying. No one will deny that the responsibility of
students is to study hard. Knowing that the educational system is examination-oriented and
elite-oriented, students are supposed to work hard only. Critics claim that the school result
and the public examination result will determine the students' future; therefore, students
should devote themselves to study. As a result, I absolutely oppose any romantic relationship
between two young people before 18, the time when they have completed S7.
Some hold the view that once the young students fall in love, their schoolwork will be
affected. Psychologists state that most of the young people are not mature enough to deal with
their love affairs. Some of the students may even don't know what is the true meaning of love.
Moreover, love affairs are always associated with emotional disturbances and uncertainty,
immature young lovers may not know to allocate their time between study and love affairs.
Although most people hold the view that romantic relationships between boys and girls
should suspend their love until after 18; however, some still claim that a healthy romantic
relationship is acceptable. A research, which was done by a team of social workers, reveals
that most of the young lovers are mature enough to deal with their love affairs. Most of them
know that, love is mutual support and concerns. On the other hand, they realize that their
target is to study. A pair of lovers always encourages each other to work hard. Thus, if the two
lovers hold a true attitude of 'LOVE', this romantic relationship is undoubtedly healthy and
beneficial.
Love affairs between teenagers are seemed to be inevitable. Two young people may fall in
love at the first sight. Or, after the two young people have developed their love for some time,
they may feel that they need each other. Such cases are common. Especially in Hong Kong,
most parents go to work, many young people want to have their own partners in order to solve
their personal problems. Thus, romantic relationship between boys and girls is natural.
As a teenager of seventeen years old, I do believe that a romantic relationship between
boys and girls is acceptable under the guidance of their parents and teachers. However, we are
not mature to handle the conflict between lovers. Therefore, I restate that teenagers main
target is to study, not to pursue romanatic relationship till they are at university.

A visit in a vet clinic
Last Wednesday, I went to a veterinary surgeon with my dog. When I entered the
clinic, there were already two persons in the waiting room. An old woman was
holding a cat in her arms. A girl with a rabbit sat next to me. A few minutes later, a
boy carrying a box entered the clinic.

The boy sat next to the girl. There were several holes on the box in which an
animal was kept. The boy did not take his pet out. I did not know what kind of animal
it was. Later, the boy and the girl started chattering. The boy fondled her rabbit. At
that time, there was some strange sound, `zzzzzzzz' coming from the box. However,
nobody noticed that except my dog and the cat. My dog barked at the box and the cat
jumped up. We were alarmed. Oh! There was a snake crawling out of the box.

The snake crawled quickly on the floor. However, the boy paid no attention to
his pet. My dog was still barking loudly. I was very frightened, so I screamed.

All the people in the clinic looked at me. Then I pointed at the snake. Hearing the
noise, the old woman jumped onto the sofa and the girl cried for help. A nurse came
out of the office and asked us what had happened. She found that a snake was
crawling towards her. She went back to the office and closed the door immediately.
After a few minutes, the vet came out. He wore a pair of gloves lest he should be
bitten by the snake. Finally, he caught the snake.

The vet examined the snake and he was sure that it was not poisonous. I felt that
I was very lucky. If the snake was poisonous, our lives will be endangered.

93Q2
I am writing in response to the letter dated 5 August 95, written by Doris Hung,
entitled `The right to wear fur'. I agree that women have the right to wear fur.
However, animals also have the right to live. Is it just cruel to kill an animal just
because of its fur.
Everyone has the right to live, so have animals. Nowadays, wearing fur becomes more
and more fashionable among women. It is because they think that wearing fur is a
status symbol. Only rich people can wear fur. Once they wear fur, they would think
that they are superior to others. Thus, they gain self-confidence. Since fur comes from
animals; once a fur coat is made, an animal (or even more) is killed. Do you want to
see so many animals being killed just because of making your fur coat?
Apart from granting rights for animals to live, we should protect them from extinction.
Since women like to wear fur, animal hunters are willing to produce more fur coats in
order to make more profit. Thus, they kill more animals. However, animals cannot
reproduce their offspring in a short period. As time goes by, they are fewer and fewer
in number and finally become extinct. In order to prevent animals from extinction, we
should stop killing them. Dont wear fur and our `hope' would be achieved.
Although I do not encourage people to wear fur, I would not throw paint or ink at
women who wear a fur coat because I think it is disgusting. Everyone has the right to
do what they want if they do not obstruct the others. Why did those people in America
throw paint and ink at a woman who wore a fur coat? The woman only did what she
wanted without obstructing others. I do not think that she had done anything wrong.
All in all, wearing fur should not be encouraged. If we continue to make fur coats by
killing animals, they may became extinct. It would affect the ecosystem. On the other
hand, we should respect others. People who wear fur is for warmth. We cannot do
harm to them. Imagine that you were being harmed, how would you feel?

Her changing size
Last Sunday, when I woke up, I heard my mother's calling, `Help! Help!' but I
could not find her. I looked aorund the house. Suddenly, I saw a tidy little creature
under a chair and it was moving its hands. It was my mother! Oh! I did not believe my
eyes! My mother became 20cm tall!

I was frightened and did not know what to do! I picked up my tidy, little mother
in my hands and took her on my bed. I had to take care of her every minute. I put her
carefully into my pocket and took her to see a doctor, but the doctor could neither
give me a reason for her changing size for a normal one to a smaller one nor he
could help her change back to a normal size. Since I found no solution to the
problem, I took my mother home. On my way home, she slipped out of my pocket,
and nearly fell onto the ground. I was so frightened that I held her tightly. Luckily, I
took her safely home. I had to feed her and help her in whatever way she needed. I
hoped my mother could grow back to her normal size. I did not want my mother to be
so small.

In the evening, while my mother was sleeping, I sat near the bed and looked
after her. She looked like a doll. How pity she was! I could not control myself. My
tears ran out of my eyes, and it dropped down on my mother's face. Suddenly, she
became bigger and bigger. After a few minutes, she changed back to her normal size.
I was surprised to ask my mother what had happened, however, she did not know. I
thought that was the most exciting experiencein my life.

Make full use of the building
Do you want to join a Tennis Club in school? Since our school provides insufficient
space for students to have extra-curricular activities, many of our activities were
cancelled. Fortunately, due to his love to his mother school, Mr. Dominic Wong gave
us an old building and its garden next to our school. Students can make full use of the
building and its garden for various kinds of activities.
On the second floor of the building, I suggest having a music-record room with
sound facilities. Students can make a cassette bulletin monthly in English. Students
may improve their English standard and speaking skills during the process of
organising the bulletin. The bulletin should be organised by different students from
different forms in order to give every student a chance to participate in it. Moreover,
students can learn how to work in a team and to foster leadership skills and
inter-personal skills. These kinds of training will make students mature and will
prepare themselves to have good social skills.
On the first floor of the building, we can have a dancing room.
The school may hold a ballet class in order to teach students how to dance ballet well.
Students who have talent for dancing can be chosen to be a member of the ballet team.
It can promote dancing to students and provide an opportunity for them to relax from
texts and tests.
Which kind of activities can be held at the garden? Maybe under the influence of the
famous tennis player, Michael Cheung, tennis has become a very popular sport in
recent years. I suggest developing a tennis court in the garden. Such a healthy exercise
is helpful to the physical and mental growth of students. Taking part in
extra-curricular activities is an important aspect in school life. It releases students'
stress that triggered by the heavy workload. Besides doing exercise in a beautiful
garden makes students refreshed.
All in all, we should make full use of the our assets and treasure our fortune to have
the old building and its garden. With the generosity of few, it benefits many. Enjoy
our school life and treasure all facilities provided.

25 May 92
Dear Chris,
How are you? I hope you are fine. I have just joined a new school. I had my first
lesson yesterday. Unfortunately, my students are naughty. Therefore, I used my
greatest effort to ease this situation. I thought I'd drop you a line to share my first day
as a teacher.
Students do not concentrate on learning English. Yesterday, I saw a student
falling asleep in class. He snored `ZZZZZZZZ' loudly. In order to make him
concentrate on learning English, I ordered the one who fell asleep to clean the
blackboard in order to keep him awake. This method can deter students from falling
asleep.
Besides, naughty students disturb others in the classroom. A naughty boy pulled
the ponytail of the girl sitting next to him. The naughty boy laughed at the girl, so she
was placed in an embarrassing situation. Therefore, I asked the naughty boy who
laughed at the girl to stand up and put his hands on his head to prevent him from
disturbing the others.
Usually, boys are naughtier than girls are. However, girls do sometimes not
observe the school rules. A girl ate and drank during my English lesson yesterday. The
girl held her textbook upright. She drank a can of coke, and ate a hamburger behind
the book stealthily. Since students were forbidden to eat or drink in the classroom, I
punished the one who was eating and drinking by deducting her conduct marks
strictly. This method was so effective that no one dared to eat or drink in the
classroom again.
In addition, students do not respect me by doing other subjects' assignment.
Yesterday, my class had an economic test and students were worried about it, so they
reviewed the economics notes under their desks. Therefore, I told these students who
reviewed other subjects' notes under the desks that they would miss key points which
are important in English, for example, the reading skills of understanding a piece of
comprehension. Luckily, the students followed my instructions and took away their
economics notes. Consequently, those discipline problems were solved.
In order to solve these problems thoroughly, I will do my best to help my
students by telling them to concentrate on studying instead of punishing them strictly.
Do write to me when you have time. Bye-bye.
Yours sincerely,
K.K.

Last night you attended the pop concert advertised in the poster below. Write an
interesting account of the concert for your school newspaper in which you describe
the new pop group. Include in your account the stage design, the special lighting and
sound effects, and the behavior of the audience. You should also give your opinion of
the music. Sign your account `R. King.' (1992)
I am writing to express my opinion about a concert. Last night, at eight o' clock,
I went to the Hong Kong Coliseum to attend the pop concert starred by a Hong Kong
fantastic new Pop group, `The leaping lizards', but surprisingly, the concert was quite
successful!
`The Leaping Lizards' was made up of four members. They were Leon Lai,
Jackie Cheung, Andy Lau and Aaron Kwok. They were dancers of TVB one year ago
and formed the group this year, thus they danced well in the concert. During the
concert, the four members dressed like lizards to match their name. Their singing skill
was as good as their dancing skill.
The stage design, the special lighting and sound effects were good too! The stage
was special. It was not in the form of the traditional rectangular shape, but in the
shape of a lizard. There were many light rays of various colors projected from the top
of the stage. The lighting effects made pop stars outstanding. The sound effect was the
best. It was the first time to use the surround system and BBE in the concert. The
music played was full of energy with fast beats; when it came to love songs, it was in
slow beats. It filled the Coliseum with harmony.
The audience was excited during the concert. They cheered at `The Leaping
Lizards'. Some of the audience even stood on the seats and sang with their idols.
Some fans went to the stage and presented flowers or dolls to their idols. A crazy fan
even lay on the stage because she did not want to leave her idols. Finally, two security
guards brought her down the stage.
Generally speaking, the performance of the pop group was satisfactory. They
sang the songs well although it is a new pop group. However, I think their singing and
dancing skills can be improved if they practise more. They definitely have a bright
future!

92Q3

Dear Principal, panel of adjudicators, teachers, and schoolmates,

I am the second speaker of our debate team, speaking against today's motion.
Today's motion is `That it is necessary to have a law to stop parents leaving any child
below the age of eight unattended.' We agree that it is necessary to stop parents
leaving a child unattended, but we strongly oppose to `have a law'!
Such a law is difficult to be enforced! As you know, Hong Kong is densely
populated because there are many families in Hong Kong. It is difficult to find out
whether there is a parent leaving a child unattended because it is impossible to have
policemen to inspect all families for twenty-four hours every day. Since the law is
difficult to be enforced, there is no need to have such a law.
Is it not justified to give penalties to parents who leave children unattended?
Parents love their children. They don't want their children to have any injury. Most of
the parents leave their child alone just because they have some important work to do,
and nobody can help them look after their children. Although some organizations
provide childcare services to look after children who are under eight years old, parents
cannot find these services easily. Therefore, the government should bear part of the
responsibility of this problem because it doesn't provide adequate service.
A law is not effective to stop parents leaving their children unaccompanied.
Since it is difficult to find someone to look after their children, most parents prefer
bearing the risk of being punished and leave the children alone. Therefore, it is more
effective to provide adequate service for looking after children. It is unnecessary to
have an ineffective law.
In conclusion, since a law is ineffective; a law is difficult to be enforced. It is
unfair to punish the parents; therefore, it is not necessary to `have a law' to stop
parents leaving children unattended and today's motion - `That it is necessary to have
a law to stop parents leaving any child below the age of eight unattended' cannot be
adopted! Thank you very much!

92Q4
Are you studying in an ideal school? Have you ever thought a perfect school
existing? In fact, there is one in my mind. Do you want to share my `ideal' school?
An air-conditioning system installed in all classrooms is a prerequisite for an
ideal school. Temperature and humidity have profound effects on our mood that in
turn affects our effectiveness in learning. In summer, it is too hot for students to
concentrate on learning. In winter, it is too cold for students to pay attention in class.
Therefore, an air-conditioning system is desirable to maintain optimum temperature
and humidity that has a tonic effect on our mood.
A canteen providing good and inexpensive food is another key feature for an
ideal school. Many schools in Hong Kong only have poor canteens; some, no canteen.
Therefore, many students complain that they can't have a pleasant lunch with a
reasonable price. They have to go out of the school to find somewhere to have good
and inexpensive food for lunch; they also have to go back to school in a hurry. Thus,
providing a good canteen is an important facility for an ideal school.
Moreover, regular meetings between student representatives and teachers is
another vital element for an ideal school. In this world, nothing is perfect, including
school rules, so it is necessary to hold regular meetings through which students can
suggest means to amend the out-dated school rules. Students can also give ideas to
improve their school life. Besides, regular meetings can tighten the communication
between students and teachers. Therefore, having regular meetings is preferable.
In Hong Kong, every student spends about eight hours in school every day.
Therefore, it is important for students to have a happy atmosphere. All in all, an
`ideal' school can make students' lives enjoyable. Is `my ideal' school applicable and
adaptable?

Teenagers bullying
During the last two weeks you have seen a group of teenagers bullying a boy
from your school. Here is what you saw:
The schoolboy is now in hospital but is too frightened to tell the police what
happened to him. You want to help the police. Write a factual report for the police
about the teenagers and what they did to the boy. Sign your report `Kam Wai-wai.' Do
NOT write any address.
A schoolboy is now in hospital but is too frightened to tell the police what
happened to him. In fact, I can't stand it! I have to give the schoolboy a hand.
Therefore, I pluck up courage to report it to the police!
Junior form students are too weak to resist triad gangs. During the last two weeks, I
have seen a group of teenagers bullying a boy of my school. I witnessed that the boy
was robbed and forced to give what they wanted. At 4.15p.m. on Thursday, 2 May ,
one of the three evils with a turban round his head started throwing all his things out
of his schoolbag while another evil, who wore a cap and a pair of boots, was taking
away all the money from the victim's wallet. The poor boy attempted to stop them,
however, a tough man tightened him. He cried for help but `no one' did help !
The unlucky boy suffered again at the pop concert at 4.15p.m. on Thursday, 9th May.
The evil with a turban round his head said savagely, `Take his ticket!'. The tough man
held the boy's arm tightly and pretended to fight him. The poor boy was so frightened
that he gave him his ticket.
On 16May 91, at about the same time, the gang threatened the boy to become
one of their members, but he refused to join them. He tried to escape from them.
Therefore, he took to his heels and ran as quickly as if he were running for his life.
Later, he was running up to the Short Alley and he found that there was nowhere else
to turn. One of the evils commanded,` Get him, Ah Sau!' The boy decided to climb up
the wall, but it was too late! The three evils gave him a beat and finally escaped while
the boy shouted painfully. `Aaahhh... my leg!' the evil with a cap feared, `someone
will hear him!' But the tough man urged, `Quick! Run!' As a result, they disappeared.
I hope the police catch the gang and curb triad activities. It's my pleasure to help the
police.

91Q2

Sometimes Form 1 students feel confused and unhappy in their first term. Everything seems
different and strange. There are new subjects, new teachers and new school rules.
You are a Form 5 student. The principal has asked all the students in your form to write a
composition suggesting ways in which form 5 students could help Form 1 students to feel happy
and comfortable in their first term.
Write your composition, describing the problems and difficulties of new form 1 students and
explaining what causes these problems. Remember to suggest what you and your classmates could
do to help.
Form one students usually feel confused and unhappy in the first term. Everything is strange
or new to them. My classmates and I, being form 5 students, know what problems form one
students are facing, should try our best to help them enjoy school life in their first term.
Since there is a great difference between the system of a primary school and that of a
secondary school, form 1 students usually have difficulties in familiarizing with the new
environment they study in. Therefore they often feel lonely and unhappy in their first term.
In order to help form one students, we should first find out the causes of the problems. The
subject, the teachers and the school rules of the secondary school are entirely different from those
of their primary schools. Form 1 students do not know how they should behave. They don't know
from where they can get help too.
Form 1 students need our help. They usually feel helpless when they need help, so my
classmates and I can help them by talking and listening to them. We can listen to their problems
and explain to them what they don't understand such as the new school rules. In addition, we can
share our past experience with form one students who face similar difficulties. Every student goes
through a similar path.
Besides maintaining a good relation with S.1 students, we can meet them regularly and solve
their problems in their homework. In addition, we can introduce students in their form among
themselves. They can help one another. We can also encourage them to make friends with
students in their age actively. This is an effective method.
Being form 5 students, I believe with our sharing of past experience and our help, our `little
brothers and sisters ' in school will enjoy school life easily.

Dear Miss Wong,
My experience of the last summer camp was awful! (negative) I and my
classmates did not enjoy it last year. It was rather boring and even I felt as if I were in
prison! The services and facilities were absolutely poor! Therefore, none of us wants
to go this year.
The location (1) of the camping site was far away from the urban. In fact, the
camp site was on an island that was almost inhabited. There was nowhere else to visit.
We must stay in the camp site all days. We were isolated! Three days seemed to be too
long. That terrible experience discourages us from attending the summer camp this
year.
The food (2)was simple. During those three days, we had vegetables only. The
amount was insufficient, and therefore, we felt hungry at all times. We were fed up
with eating the same set of food for lunch. As a result, I would rather have bread than
such tasteless meals.
The camp site was lacking in sleeping facilities.(3) There were not sufficient
beds. Some of us had to sleep on the floor. We couldn't bear it! We were too tired to
work or play. We just wanted to go back home to have a nice dream!
Furthermore, there was no choice for us to choose activities. The organizer of the
camp site made the day and evening programmes (4) that deprived of our freedom.
For instance, the organizer did not allow us to play freely after lunch and he told us to
have a sleep. Moreover, he commanded us to sleep before ten o' clock and restricted
us to play chess in bedrooms. Those rigid limitations made us disappointed.
Most importantly, we were bored to live in a camping site without recreational
facilities. In fact, we wanted relaxation. However, there was no recreational ground
for us to play. That let us down deeply.
All in all, we did not satisfy with the last summer camp. The location should be
close to the urban. The menu should be various and the sleeping facilities should be
sufficient. Furthermore, rules of the camp site should be amended. Above all, the
camp should provide more recreational facilities. (5)
I hope you make better plans in future.
Yours sincerely,
Kam Wai-wai

91Q4
Are you friendly with people? Perhaps you are friendly only with your friends,
but what about with your neighbors? There is a dead fact that Hong Kong people are
friendly but not many Hong Kong families are friendly with their neighbors.
There are many conflicts among neighbors every day in Hong Kong. In
newspapers, we can find many news about the people who quarrel with their
neighbors over some trifles. In some more serious cases, they may pick up knives to
attack their neighbors.
John is my classmate, whose neighbor is an unfriendly person. His neighbor
keeps a dog at home. It barks all the days so it makes much noise. One day, John
asked his neighbor to make the dog keep quiet. It was so noisy that he couldn't
concentrate on his study. However, the man did not stop the dog barking, he said 'It's
not your business!!' John failed in a test the next day because he could not study well
on a particular night.
I have got an unfriendly neighbor too! Once, a water tap in the kitchen was
broken, the water ran out quickly. I asked my neighbor for help, but his answer was '
why should I help you?' I was very angry at that time. The water tap was repaired
after my father had come home. However, the floor had got wet all. I could hardly dry
it out!
I believe that not all the neighbors are unfriendly, but many facts show that not
many Hong Kong families are friendly with their neighbors. Some of them may be
even selfish; some of them may disturb their neighbors too! Therefore, it is important
to improve relationship with our neighbors.

8 August 90
Dear Ming,
I am glad to receive your letter! How are you? Do you enjoy your summer holiday? I
really hope you do! In the letter, you ask for my advice to cope with the problems in
form five. As I was once a form five student, I try my best to help you.
When I recalled those days in form five, I really had many problems at first. There
were two or three tests in a week, even several on the same day. Moreover, teachers
could finish teaching three to four chapters in a week! I found it difficult to keep pace
with the teaching tempo. Furthermore, I could not stand the pressure from keen
competition in the examination. I felt nervous and stressful. Consequently, my
performances in the tests were poor.
I felt lost and frustrated. Later on, I realized that my problems were resulted from my
ineffective studying method. I always prepared my tests the previous night. Therefore,
you should prepare your tests as early as possible. The teachers usually inform you to
have a tests one or two weeks in advance. Do prepare the tests as soon as your
teachers inform you.
Additionally, you should concentrate in class lest you miss the key points of the topic.
To prepare the lesson in advance is helpful to improve your understanding to the
content of the books. Furthermore, having a good sleep is important, too. Don't worry
about the examination result and don't study overnight. If you were sick, you would
not be able to deal with the heavy academic work.
On the other hand, participating in too many activities may hinder you from studying
well. You should allocate your time efficiently. You may stop giving private tuition
when you are in form five so as to save more time for studying. It is just my advice.
You should make your sensible decision to allocate your time.
I have written a lot and I am better to stop here. Remember! Work hard and you will
succeed!
Wah.

90Q2
Do you know that a fund-raising concert is coming? Moreover, I am a member of
student organizing committee. In a few words, I will tell you the information about
the concert.
The charity concert is meaningful! The fund raised from the concert will go to
the Red Cross to help buy another `blood bus'. The meaningful concert will be held at
the school Hall next Friday, 18th May. Furthermore, it will last for an hour, from 4
p.m. to 5 p.m. The school symphonic band, the choir, the Guitar club and the Chinese
Music Club will have wonderful performance in the concert. The price for each
concert ticket is ten dollars. The money from selling the tickets will send to the Red
Cross directly. You can also make donation if you want. There will be a charity box
placed in front of the school office that day.
The Red Cross has bought a `blood bus' already, but why another `blood bus' is
needed? There are many traffic accidents in Hong Kong and the victims of the traffic
accident have to use a large amount of blood. In addition, patients in hospitals may
use the blood for taking operations. As a result, the Red Cross can collect blood every
day. However, there is only one ` blood bus' and the blood collected is not sufficient
for providing the Blood Keeping Center and for the patients and victims of accidents.
To solve the problem, the Red Cross should have another `blood bus'. People need not
worry about the shortage of blood anymore.
I am upset by the Red Cross that it has no money to buy a new `blood bus'. We
must give a hand to the Red Cross by supporting the fund-raising concert. I must
attend the concert, and how about you? I hope all of you support the concert and we
can raise more fund for the Red Cross!

90Q4

`A useful service' refers to benefits to society. Do you think hawkers provide benefits
to society? Many Hong Kong people think that hawkers provide good and cheap
food, or goods. It is easier to find a hawker than to find a supermarket near one's place,
thus, hawkers do provide a convenient service to the public. Apart from the
convenience, however, they bring us a lot of nuisance. The service of hawkers is
debatable among the public.
Hawkers cause land pollution, noise pollution and air pollution. Hawkers make the
city dirty, especially those who sell foods. Bad oranges, bad apples, noodles,
meatballs and sewage are always seen on a street that is full of hawkers. It is awful
when one step on them! Moreover, hawkers yell at the top of their voices to attract
customers to buy their goods. Their yelling makes us uncomfortable and uneasy.
Furthermore, masses of litter often emit sickening smell. Such unhygienic conditions
cannot be tolerated!
The service of the hawkers is detrimental to society. The goods of hawkers block the
pavement along the street. It is difficult to walk through a crowded street filled with
hawkers. Besides, it is dangerous when the officer of the Urban Council arrest them. I
read a piece of news a few months ago. Two young sisters were seriously scalded
during a raid. They were splashed with sharks fin soup from a cart belonging to a
hawker who was fleeing from General Duties Team Officers during a clearance
operation on Tsing Yi Island. This piece of news is alarming and startling! The
hawkers are as dangerous as a bomb that will explode at any time!
Hawkers help virus spread out to the public. Hawkers often remain heaps of rubbish
along the streets which breeding germs. Germs then spread out through air. When
people breathe, they will suffer from infections; such as tuberculosis and bronchitis.
In addition, the food sold by hawkers is unhygienic. People may suffer from diarrhea
if they take them. Thus, hawkers will make Hong Kong to be a `Disease City'!
No one wants to be a victim, no matter if we are hawkers or non-hawkers. To ensure a
clean environment, the government should vigorously enforce the `anti-hawker'
ordinance. Otherwise, serious pollution will spoil our living environment.
