Coral Frontiers is a proposal for a new infrastructure for

coral regeneration on the Island of Diego Garcia. It is also
a geo-political intervention into a unique entanglement
of military, human rights, and environmental stakes.
The project explores how could an architectural
proposal result in a shift in the balance of power that
has crystallised in this remote island, and support the
resettlement of the exiled community of its native
inhabitants, the Chagossians. This project attempts to turn
vulnerability into a force, and to challenge the defeatist
assumptions that a small exiled community would always
has to bend to the will of powerful governments.

FACADE DETAIL

The station area of Utrechts centre is undergoing

significant redevelopment and currently receives almost
100 million travelers per year, with 25 million alone
passing through the site of the North Building. The
developer proposed an unusual, mixed use program
including 8.000 m2 luxury hotel, 7.200 m2 retail, 5.000 m2
of ofices, and 1.800 m2 restaurant and bar. By collecting
the program for the North Building into one slim volume,
which adjusts according to each program contained
within it, building over the track, a costly and logistically
undesirable proposal, can be prevented.

IJburg is a new district to the east of Amsterdam. On its six

artificial islands, 18,000 homes will be eventually be built
for 45,000 residents. MVRDVs challenge was to create a
building that works as a living room for IJburg, where the
building becomes a part of the community like piece of
street furniture. The club house is a 322 m2 open volume
with services on either side such as dressing rooms, a
kitchen and toilets. The main space is multifunctional, so it
can be used for the clubs many events.

TEGEL FIELDS

THE FUTURE OF TEGEL BUSINESS PARK

It is assumed that the future use of the Tegel airport will

be as a commercial and manufacturing base. The concept
of Tegel Fields, 460 Ha Business park masterplan,
provides a framework for making the area dense,
sustainable, and a high quality environment to develop
and do business in. The existing terminal building will be
preserved and used as a lobby and development agency
for the area. In the north of Tegel, existing buildings
will be converted for commercial and leisure functions
which are compatible with the adjacent residential areas.
Integrated into these developments will be forest and
park areas which complement the existing urban fabric.

The Wembley FAIRground is a proposal for an extension

of the Brent Archive in the Wembley Triangle. It is a model
for an alternative archive, a catalyst for the production of
intellectual and cultural life rather than a mere repository
of artefacts. By infiltrating the communitys everyday
life, the Wembley FAIRground breaks down the barriers
of public access to the collective memory of Wembley.
This time-based, growing model enables the slow
transformation from a minimal public intervention to a
complex and highly dynamic independent institution.

Located between St. Anastasias Cathedral and the

Archeological Museum in Zadar, the building, which
is formerly a housing complex from 1964, has been
converted into a hostel with 37 rooms with 111 beds.
The project uses new drywall geometries, color rasters,
rhythmic patterns of ceramic tiles, glossy varnishes,
acrylic reflective boards, and tinted mirrors, to create a
new relation toward the antique, modernistic heritage.
The program gradually transitions from the private to the
public with the continuous hallway of the chat room, the
installed courtyard pavilion, and the cafe located on the
intersection of the Cardo and the Decumanus.

The site for the new primary school in Zagreb is located in

the citys area without any strict urban regulation. With the
surroundings as a main reference, the physical context is
formed by the dynamic exchange of full and empty. That is
achieved by the continuous manipulation of the heights.
As a result, micro-ambient areas with different spatial,
lighting, temperature and functional character are being
created. Perforated roof surface is becoming the skylight
for all the living areas in the school. Its relatively large
surface is activated by solar photocells, energy collectors
and a rainwater cisterns, thereby providing a self-sufficient
building.

The Place Agency competition was organised by the Brent

Council asking for a new platform for communicating the
place-based regeneration and investment opportunities
in Wembley. Our incremental proposal was based on
participatory mapping and extensive interviews with
the residents and included elements of self-build with
the existing communities and local stakeholders. Having
gained second place in the competition, we have been
commissioned by Brent Council to deliver a communityinformed masterplan for the Wembley Triangle.

The Book Mountain is a building with a mission: to

encourage a town populated by the least enthusiastic
readers in the Netherlands to switch off their televisions
and start reading books again. This biography of the Book
Mountain paints a picture of the town of Spijkenisse and
the political and social contexts in which such buildings
are realized. The story also examines the role of the
modern library, the essence of a Ville Nouvelle and the
search for an alternative for identification - and whether or
not this should be done through historicizing architecture.

For MVRDVs 20th anniversary, and as a prize for being

chosen as Architect of the Year 2012 by the readers of
German magazine Architektur & Wohnen, MVRDV created
a small retrospective exhibition of its work.Faced with
the task of looking back onto their own work MVRDV
decided to rely on the public verdict: Almost all texts in the
exhibition are quotes from media. The models exhibited
are favourites of the visitors to the Rotterdam office and
the projected movies are the most wanted on social media.
A selection of past and current work is visualised in a
timeline illuminated as a giant advertisement, fitting to the
showroom context.

Wembley Civic University, in collaboration with Brent

in close relationship with local stakeholders to design
sustainable proposals for the future of the Wembley

a space providedby the council and consequently ran it as
a community forum from which a series of individuallyled initiatives were developed while being anchored in
the reality of the local conditions a complex network of

Written in 1967, Henri Lefebrves prophetic declaration of

The Right to the City contains a dual sense: on one side it
is a revolutionary claim urging man to reach out for a new
society and a new city;
on the other it is an imperative which rises up from the
streets in response to specific disputes of urban contexts.
Architecture & Activism Unit (Royal College of Art) have
used the Work in Progress 2015 Show to organise series
of debates through which they collectively formulated an
alternative Right to the City Charter.
