Global Warming and Climate

Change
An Overview

What is Global Warming?

Increase in long term average global surface

temperature

What is Global Warming?

Global warming is when the earth

heats up (the temperature rises).

It happens when greenhouse
gases (carbon dioxide, water
vapor, nitrous oxide, and methane)
trap heat and light from the sun in
the earths atmosphere, which
increases the temperature.

What is Global Warming?

Earth has warmed by about

0.7 C over the past 100

years. But why? And how?
Earth could be getting
warmer due to natural causes
World's leading climate
scientists think that warming
is due to human activities

Nitrous oxides
CFCs and HCFCs
HFCs

What is Global Warming?

Sources of Carbon Dioxide

Power generation

Land use change

Wastes

Agriculture

Livestock

Deforestation

What is Global Warming?

CO2 and other Greenhouse Gases

What is Climate Change?

Global warming leads to Climate Change
and enhances Climate Variability
Climate Change is change in long term
global average temperature and rainfall
Climate Variability is change in
seasonality of temperature and rainfall

Due to Global
Warming and
Climate Change,
we may not need
clothes in the
future.(good
news!)

What is climate variability?

-Inter-annual variability or

change in
seasonality
-Change in the onset of rainy
season
-Change in the distribution of
rainfall

CLIMATE CHANGE AND GLOBAL WARMING

ARE REAL!

Impacts of Climate Change on

Forests
Ecosystems and environment are
already stressed due to
Population growth
Poverty
Land use change
Over utilization of resources
Pollution

Impacts of Climate Change on Forests

Mitigation

Avoid Burning

Impacts on Forest Ecosystem Services

Temperature increases beyond 1.5-2.5 degrees C
20-30% plants & animals at increased risk of
extinction

Impacts on Forest Ecosystem Services

Impacts on Forest Ecosystem Services

Streamflow
Increase average annual runoff and water
availability in some wet areas by 10-40%

Impacts on Forest Ecosystem Services

Exacerbates water stress due to

increasing demand
10-30% decrease in dry areas which are
already water stressed

Impacts on Forest Ecosystem Services

and Quezon

Flashfloods

Impacts on Forest Ecosystem Services

Upland farming
Collection of forest
products
Fishing
Logging
Handicrafts

Impacts on Forest Ecosystem Services

Exacerbates Poverty

FUTURE CLIMATE
Continuous warming of temperature
More rains in wet areas and less in

dry areas
More prominent ENSO events and a

shift in seasonal cycle

Increase in tropical cyclone intensities

FUTURE CLIMATE
Stronger winds with enhanced sea
surface temp and low pressure
could amplify storm surge heights
and increase risk of coastal
disasters
Sea level likely to continue rising
(3.1mm/yr over last decade was
observed vs 1.7-2.4 mm/yr for last
century)

Are climate change and global warming the

same thing?
Not exactly, but theyre closely related, and some
people use the terms interchangeably. Global
warming causes climates to change. "Global
warming" refers to rising global temperatures, while
climate change includes other more specific kinds
of changes, too.
Warmer global temperatures in the atmosphere and
oceans leads to climate changes affecting rainfall
patterns, storms and droughts, growing seasons,
humidity, and sea level.

GLOBAL WARMING AND CLIMATE

CHANGE..
Also, while global warming is planet-wide,
climate change can refer to changes at the
global, continental, regional and local levels.
Even though a warming trend is global,
different areas around the world will
experience different specific changes in
their climates, which will have unique
impacts on their local plants, animals and
people. A few areas might even get cooler
rather than warmer.

To face the present climate

change and global warming
situation, all of us must find ways
to:
MITIGATE (Climate Change

Mitigation);
and ADAPT to its effects.
