Earlyactivities
BornintheChteaudelaDurbellire,SaintAubin
deBaubign,nearChtillon,LaRochejaquelein
joinedtheRoyalPolishRegiment,ofwhichhis
fatherascolonel,in1787.[2]InFebruary1789he
becameamemberoftheFlandersregimentof
chasseurs.[3]InMarch1792hebecameamemberof
theConstitutionalGuard,chargedwithprotectingthe
king.[4]Hefoughtforthefirsttimedefendingthe
TuileriesPalaceonthe10thofAugustattackof
1792,asanofficeroftheConstitutionalGuardof
KingLouisXVI.
Returningtohishomeprovince,herefusedto
complywiththeleveenmassecalledbythe
outbreakoftheFrenchRevolutionaryWarsand
joinedhiscousinLouisMariedeLescureonthe
latter'sestatesinPoitou.

Rebellion
Resistancetoconscriptionsoonescalatedintoafull
rebellion,knownastheWarintheVendee.Soon
after,laRochejaqueleinandhiscompatriotsstarted
fightingthetroopsoftheFrenchRepublicwithLouis

RochejaqueleingainedhisfirstvictoryovertheFrench
RevolutionaryArmyon13April,tookparttothetakingof

Bressuireon3May, intheBattleofFontenayleComteon25MayandintheBattleofSaumuron9
June.AtFontenayhewasfamousforhiscontemptfordanger,wearingthreeredhandkerchiefsonhis
head,aroundhisneckandathiswaisttodefytheRepublicangunners.[6]AfterFontenayhiscompanions
decidedthattheywouldalsowearthreeredhandkerchiefssothatLaRochejacquelincouldnotbe
singledout.[7]
InAugust,aftertheBattleofLuon,heregroupedtheVendanarmy,whichwasonthevergeofbeing
disbanded,andwontheBattleofChantonnayon5September.On13Septemberthethumbofhisright
handwasshatteredbyabulletduringanengagementwithRepublicansatMartignBriandbuthe
continuedtofireathisopponents.HisfamousportraitbyPierreNarcisseGurinshowshimwithhis
rightarminasling,shootingwithhislefthand.[8]HehadtoretreatacrosstheLoireafterbeingbeatenin
theBattleofCholet,on17October.

Finalmonths
OnOctober20,LaRochejaqueleinwasunanimouslyelectedas
commanderinchiefoftheCatholicandRoyalArmyattheageof
21,replacingd'ElbewhohadbeenseverelywoundedinCholet.
However,hisbraverydidnotcompensateforhislackofexperience
andstrategicskills.HemarchedontoGranville,tookAvrancheson
November12,butfailedtoseizeGranvilleandretreatedtoAngers
inordertocrosstheLoire.
LargerforcesunderFranoisSverinMarceau,JeanBaptiste
Klber,andFranoisJosephWestermanngavechase,defeatinghim
onceinLeMansonDecember12,andagain,moreseverely,on23
DecemberinSavenay.Afterthisdecisiverout,theCatholicand
RoyalArmywasnolongerafightingforce,andLaRochejacquelein

hadtotaketothewoodsdisguisedasapeasant.[9]Hemanagedtosavetheremainsofhisarmyby
crossingtheLoire,andleftunderthecriticismofhisfellowcompanions.
WhiletryingtopursueaguerrillawaragainsttheRepublicans,hewaskilledbyaRepublicansoldier
nearNuaillon28January1794.OnareconnaissancemissionhehadspottedtwoRepublicansoldiers
whopretendedtosurrendertohim,butthenshothimintheforehead.[10]Hewastwentytwoyearsold.
HisbrotherLouisbecametheheadoftheroyalistsinVendein1813andfurtheredtheroyalistcause
thereduringtheHundredDaysperiod.HefellinbattleatPontdeMathison4June1815.[11]
