WELCOME FROM

Welcome back to all of our Affton families,

students, staff and community! We are
excited to begin the 2015-2016 school year,
and have lots of changes and new
opportunities in store. New to our families, students and
staff this year: 1:1 Chromebooks at both Affton High School
and Rogers Middle School; SchoolMessenger, a new
notification system; and the introduction of Affton Advanced
Professional Studies (A@ps), an innovative, nationally
recognized program offering students a rigorous professional
curriculum combining real world and academia in an
immersive environment.
The mission of the Affton School District is to prepare all
of our students to become confident and capable citizens
through rigorous, customized learning.
As we approach the new school year, it is a time to take
pride in Affton Schools. Not only are our teachers and
students being recognized for doing great things (see page
13), our district is becoming known across the area and the
state as a leader in innovation, technology and individualized
learning. We have been recognized as:
a Future Ready school district by the U.S. Department of
Education,
the only district in St. Louis County to be placed on the
5th Annual Advanced Placement (AP) Honor Roll by the
College Board,
certified as the first district in the 2014-2015 school year
in Common Sense Digital Citizenship, and
we received the 2015 Outstanding Board of Education
Award in Teaching, Learning and Assessment by the
Missouri School Board Association.
Even more impressive is that we have earned these
achievements while maintaining the same budget, roughly
$29.5 million, for four years running. While, just like at your
home, expenses continue to rise, we recognize and value
the importance of ensuring fiscal responsibility for our
schools and our community. It is imperative that we maintain
the integrity of instruction in our classrooms, and we are still
funding innovation while managing our resources and living
within our means.
Most importantly, we remain Affton Strong. I look forward
to celebrating additional successes and recognition achieved
by our district, our schools, our students and our community.
Thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Dr. Steve Brotherton
Superintendent

ABOUT GOTSCH
Grades: 3-5
2014-15 Enrollment: 534
School Hours: 8:40 a.m. 3:25 p.m.
Number of Teachers: 36

Gotsch School was opened to

elementary students in the fall of
1968. Through the years, Affton
students in third, fourth and fifth
grades have attended McKenzie
School, Heege School, Reavis School
(of which Mr. Richard Gotsch was
principal), and Mesnier School.
During a reorganization of schools
in 1975, Gotsch became the Gotsch
Early Childhood Center and housed
the early childhood education and
kindergarten programs. In 1984, those

programs were moved and fourth and

fifth grade students began attending
Gotsch School, and in 2008, third
grade students were also moved from
Mesnier to Gotsch Intermediate
School.
In 2013, Gotsch Intermediate
received a Promising Practice in
Character Education from the
Character Education Partnership
(CEP) for No Make Up Tuesday,
when female staff went without
makeup to encourage their third,

fourth and fifth grade students to do

the same each week, and help
reinforce the lesson that true beauty
lies within and not in the way you
look.
Gotsch Intermediate School will
provide an environment that enables
all to reach their full potential
academically, socially, and physically
for the benefit of the individual and
the community.

of Gravois Road and Heege Road.
In 2012, the new Affton Early
Childhood Center was opened at

AFFTON EDUCATION FOUNDATION

AHS 2015 SENIOR CLASS PROFILE

The Affton Education Foundation is an independent, non-profit
organization dedicated to supporting Afftons commitment to excellence
in education. The Foundations mission is to improve and enhance
educational opportunities and resources for all children enrolled in the
Affton School District, and for the teachers who support them. For more
information or to learn how you can help, please visit www.
afftoneducationfoundation.org
Affton Education Foundation Programs:

The Teacher Grant Program awards grants of up to $1,000 each year
to teachers who propose innovative and extraordinary efforts for their
classrooms. These programs are supported by donations from alumni,
parents and local businesses, and from the Foundations annual auction. In
October, 31 teacher grants were awarded a total of $22,009, bringing the
total value of funded projects to $177,930 since the programs establishment
in 2006. These selected projects have touched the lives of hundreds of
children by more effectively engaging students in the learning process.

The Affton Education Foundation Scholarship Program manages and
administers not only its own AEF Scholarship Fund, but also a number of
additional scholarships established in the names of former teachers,
administrators, parents and alumni. The Foundation awards four $2,500
renewable college scholarships to qualifying Affton High graduates each
year, funding them from gifts and income from the Foundation endowment
fund. In addition to these scholarships, the Foundation also awards several
four-year full tuition scholarships funded by separate alumni endowments:
the Kent (58) and Judy (Laudenslager) (61) Mueller Westminster College
scholarship, James H. Lamont Ranken Technical College scholarship, and
the Rickli Family Truman State scholarship. Finally, the Jim Hoots Memorial
Scholarship was established to provide college scholarship funds to a
student who has displayed outstanding leadership, dedication and
sportsmanship while participating in an Affton High School sponsored
athletic program.

The Foundation also sponsors an ongoing series of college trips for
juniors and seniors visiting a variety of colleges and universities. These
trips permit them to meet with students, professors and college presidents
and have been truly life-changing experiences for these students.

The Affton Alumni Association maintains the alumni database, assists
in organizing class reunions and helps support targeted AEF initiatives. For
more information, please visit www.afftoneducationfoundation.org and

All responsible public agencies are required to locate, evaluate, and identify
children with disabilities who are under the jurisdiction of the agency, regardless
of the severity of the disability, including children attending private schools,
children who live outside the district but are attending a private school within the
district, highly mobile children, such as migrant and homeless children, children
who are wards of the state, and children who are suspected of having a disability
and in need of special education even though they are advancing from grade to
grade. The Affton School District assures that it will provide a free, appropriate
public education (FAPE) to all eligible children with disabilities between the ages
of 3 and 21 under its jurisdiction. Disabilities include autism, deaf/blindness,
emotional disorders, hearing impairment and deafness, mental retardation/
intellectual disability, multiple disabilities, orthopedic impairment, other health
impairments, specific learning disabilities, speech or language impairment,
traumatic brain injury, visual impairment/blindness and young children with a
developmental delay.
The Affton School District assures that it will provide information and referral
services necessary to assist the State in the implementation of early intervention
services for infants and toddlers eligible for the Missouri First Steps program.
The Affton School District in partnership with the Special School District of
St. Louis County assure that personally identifiable information collected, used, or
maintained by the agency for the purposes of identification, evaluation,
placement or provision of FAPE of children with disabilities may be inspected
and/or reviewed by their parents/guardians. Parents/guardians may request
amendment to the educational record if the parent/guardian believes the record
is inaccurate, misleading, or violates the privacy or other rights of their child.
Parents have the right to file complaints with the U.S. Department of Education
or the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education concerning
alleged failures by the district to meet the requirements of the Family Educational
Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). The Affton School District has developed a
Local Compliance Plan for the implementation of State Regulations for the
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). This plan contains the agencys
policies and procedures regarding storage, disclosure to third parties, retention
and destruction of personally identifiable information and the agencys assurances
that services are provided in compliance with the General Education Provision
Act (GEPA). This plan may be reviewed at the Affton Administration Office, by
appointment with the Director of Special Education. This notice will be provided
in native languages as appropriate.
