Senior Science SciTech Cross Curricular

Proposal
By: Smruti Patel

Topic
I would like to look into aircraft and spaceship flight and the governing factors
of a successful launch. We are very dependent on aircrafts as we use it for travel,
shipping, military weapons and space exploration and travel. I would like to research
more on the controls in an aircraft and how they are designed to react to external
forces (Wind, humidity, temperature etc).

Relationship to Course Curriculum

Dynamics
- Forces affect motion in predictable and quantifiable ways.
- Forces acting on an object will determine the motion of that object
B1.1 analyse a technological device that applies the principles of linear or circular
motion (e.g., a slingshot, a rocket launcher, a race car, a trebuchet).
B2.2 solve problems related to motion, including projectile and relative motion, by
adding and subtracting two-dimensional vector quantities, using vector diagrams,
vector components, and algebraic methods.
B2.6 analyse, in qualitative and quantitative terms, the forces acting on and the
acceleration experienced by an object in uniform circular motion in horizontal and
vertical planes, and use free-body diagrams and algebraic equations to solve
related problems
Energy and Momentum
- Energy and momentum are conserved in all interactions.
- Interactions involving the laws of conservation of energy and conservation of
momentum can be analysed mathematically
C1.1 analyse, with reference to the principles of energy and momentum, and
propose practical ways to improve, a technology or procedure that applies these
principles (e.g., fireworks, rocket propulsion, protective equipment, forensic analysis
of vehicle crashes, demolition of buildings).
C2.5 analyse, in qualitative and quantitative terms, the relationships between mass,
velocity, kinetic energy, momentum, and impulse for a system of objects moving in
one and two dimensions (e.g., an off-centre collision of two masses on an air table,

two carts recoiling from opposite ends of a released spring), and solve problems
involving these concepts

Cross Curricular Aspect

Course: Calculus (MCV4U)
Rate of Change
2.1 determine numerically and graphically the intervals over which the
instantaneous rate of change is positive, negative, or zero for a function that is
smooth over these intervals (e.g., by using graphing technology to examine the
table of values and the slopes of tangents for a function whose equation is given; by
examining a given graph), and describe the behaviour of the instantaneous rate of
change at and between local maxima and minima
1.6 compare, through investigation, the calculation of instantaneous rates of change
at a point (a, f(a)) for polynomial functions

Role
I want to do my senior cross curricular on aircraft flight to educate people about the
complex topic. I would like to show the application of physics and the importance of
even one component (For ex: gravity) changes how the world of aerospace.

Audience
The intended audience for this project is students from primary to secondary grade
level.

Format
The format of this project will be on a website (Weebly).
