Major competency: L Pediatrics

L-1-2 Demonstrate knowledge of growth and development of
pediatric client.
One significant learning experience in this course
related to the CLPNA competency is that growth is the
change that can be measured and development is the
ability to complete skills and tasks. According to the
Maternity & Child care textbook the two differences
are demonstrated when for example the child is
weighed, has their height and head measured through
different stages of growth. An example of
development would be when the child learns to tie
their shoe, or learns how to function a toy.
I learned that growth and development are continuous
processes that progress in an orderly sequence. From
birth the stages of growth and development are divided
into different categories like neonatal (from birth to 28
days), infant (28 days-1year), toddler (1-3 years), Preschool (3-5 years), school-age (5-11 years), and
adolescents (12+ years). These stages relate to the
competency because the sequence gives an
understanding of what stage of the process in growth and
development the child is at. What I learned is meaningful
because gives a guideline on how assess to the progress
of the child in their growth and development stages.
Fair: understands competency in theory; unable
to apply in scenario or nursing practice.
To achieve this competency I read my textbook
and compared different scenarios, and theories to
improve my understanding of growth and
development, however could not put into practice
yet until I attend my clinical practice.
In my current clinical and future practice I will apply this
learning into my nursing practice by explaining to
parents or child the different stages of growth and how to
help the child achieve each stage in terms of, feeding,
reading, communication, etc. When the patient is on the
same page as me about how to encourage growth and

development stages I will assess to see how the

application has benefited the child in order to move to
the next stage of growth and development.
