In June 26, 2015 the United States Supreme Court ruled Friday in favor of marriage
equality, meaning that the states cannot ban gays and lesbians from getting married.i No union is
more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion,
sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than
once they were. As some of the petitioners in these cases demonstrate, marriage embodies a love
that may endure even past death. It would misunderstand these men and women to say they
disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they
seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to live in
loneliness, excluded from one of civilizations oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in
the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.ii Before reading this article, I had
some prejudice against gay couples. They were creepy and weird people. However, now, they are
just normal people who love their lover. Therefore, Korea and other countries should allow
homosexual people to marry because it is their choice and lives and they dont harm anyone.
To begin with, people who oppose gay marriage argue that the marriage institution exists

only for heterosexuals, so gay marriage shouldnt be allowed because of traditional customs. As
time goes on, however, social conventional and institutions have changed and laws should be
amended according to the needs of the people. If old laws were not amended, women would still
not be able to vote, African-Americans would still be slaves and we would not have a democracy
of voting for our President. Homosexuals are no more different than heterosexuals as human
beings and should deserve the same rights as one.iii Denying homosexuals right to marriage is
unfair, unlawful, and it infringes on their rights. Homosexuals also need their safety net. For
example, they cant sign the surgery consent form when their partner has an emergency because
they are not legal guardian. Law has to protect them as same situation of heterosexual.iv
In addition, there are people who oppose gay marriage because of their religions. They
argue that same sex marriage is against religions that marriage should be between a man and a
woman, since they may have children. But if this argument is acceptable, we should not allow
infertile couples or the older women to marry. Claiming that gay marriage is against their
religion is like being angry at someone for eating a donut because you are on a diet. Taking the
Christian bible for example, their bible has a golden rule, Love your neighbor as yourself.v
This is a commandment that the bible says. Jesus taught us to respect others and coexist together
in society just like a rainbow. There are no rules greater than this commandment. If this is right,
there are no reasons to hate gay couples too much and to discriminate from religious parties.

Finally, people who oppose gay marriage worry about children who will be adopted by
same sex couples. Protestors strongly insist children cant succeed without a male and a female
role model at home. Then, it is fair that society expressly forbid single parents to raise children.
A new study published in the Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics found that
among teens with lesbian mothers, there is no difference in the quality of life based on donor
status, experienced stigmatization, or maternal relationship continuity.vi The favorable outcomes
for these adolescents are a reflection of good parenting by mothers who prepared their daughters
and sons for the prospect of adversity. said Principal Investigator Nanette Gartrell, MD, of the
Williams Institute.vii As you can see, researchers have found that the daughters and sons of samesex parents are psychologically well-adjusted.
In conclusion, gays and lesbians are just people who love their lover, so people should
not deny their love. As the United States Supreme Court legalized a same sex marriage, Obama
give a message through SNS. Today is a big step in our march toward equality. Gay and lesbian
couples now have the right to marry, just like anyone else.viii It means all Americans are entitled
to the equal protection of the law. All people should be treated equally regardless of who they are
who they love. In June 11, 2016 the Korea Queer Culture Festival was running from 11 to 19
June.ix Thousands of people marched through central Seoul to stand up for equality and respect
for sexual minorities in the biggest pride parade, despite vocal opposition from protestors. We are

still trying to move forward to respect diversity step by step.x
