File Server:

As the name implies, a file

server is a server that provides
access to files.
It acts as a central file storage
location that can be accessed
by multiple systems.
File servers are commonly found
in enterprise settings, such as
company networks, but they are
also used in schools, small

File Server:

It is a very fast computer with a

large amount of RAM and
storage space, along with a fast
network interface card.
The network operating system
software resides on this
computer, along with any
software applications and data
file that need to be shared.

Work Station

All of the user computers

connected to a network are
called workstations.
A typical workstation is a
computer that is configured with
a network interface card,
networking software, and the
appropriate cables.
Workstations do not necessarily

Network Interface Card

Provides the physical

connection between the
network and the computer
workstation.
Most NIC are internal, with the
card fitting on the expansion
slot inside the computer.
NICs are major factors in
determining the speed and

Switch

A concentrator, a device that

provides the central connection
point for cables from
workstations, servers and
peripherals.

Switch

Usually configured with 8, 12, or

24 RJ45 ports
Often used in a star or starwired ring topology
Sold with specialized software
for port management
Also called as hubs

Repeaters

It is often necessary to boost

the signal
It electrically amplifies the
signal it receives and
rebroadcast it.
It can be a separate device or
they can be incorporated into a
concentrator.
They are used when the total

Repeaters

The repeater actually takes an

incoming signal and then
generates a new, clean copy of
that exact signal. This
prevented maximum cable
lengths from stopping
transmissions, and also helped
to ward off attenuation - the
gradual weakening of an electric

Repeaters
A repeater will ensure that the remote
device receives a clear, strong copy of
that signal.

Repeaters

A hub is basically the same as a

repeater, but the hub will have
more ports. That's the only
major difference between the
two.

Bridges

A device that allows you to

segment a large network into
two smaller, more efficient
networks.
Monitors the information traffic
on both sides of the network so
that it can pass packets of
information to the correct
location.

Bridges

Routers

Translate information from one

network to another. It is similar
to a super intelligent bridge.

Routers can:
-direct signal traffic efficiently
-route messages between two
protocols
- Route messages between linear
bus,
star, star wired ring topologies
