Younger v. Lindner
Picture a man trying to make ends meet to provide for his family and trying to
give them a better life. Wanting to improve his family living conditions. This man is
Walter Lee Younger Jr, a husband and father. He is a hard working man, chauffeuring
for a white man. Having to deal with all of his family sharing 1 small apartment and
the fact that his son sleeps in the living room is a situation that needs to be
changed. Also recently Mr.Younger Jr. father passed away, so the family is also trying
to recover from the death of a loved one. Walter Younger wife Ruth is expecting a
baby soon so the space inside their small 2 bedroom apartment is getting even
smaller. The new house they are trying to buy will provide more space for the
Younger family to live comfortably. The jury should really take the time to think
about what it was like struggling to survive because everyone has been through
that rough patch in life.

What would you do if you was not able to own property, even though it is one of
your unalienable rights, because you are black?

Today we will hear from Lena Younger, the mother of Walter Lee Younger jr. She will tell
us about her struggle for survival in this unfair society. She has raised 5 generations of
Youngers and know what it is like to have nothing. So when she was given the opportunity to
purchase her own house for he family, she did just that. The problem with her buying the house
was that it was in Clybourne park, a white neighborhood. The Clybourne park neighborhood
association representative karl Lindner paid the Youngers family a visit. During that visit he
started to say how they are an association that care about the people and wants what's best for

the people. But what Mr.Lindner really wanted was to get the Younger family out of his
neighborhood. He made them an offer to buy the house from them as a financial gain to their
family. Now to me that's sounds suspicious because if you are for the people like he said he
was, why wouldnt you let a black family move into your neighborhood. Lena Younger went
through a stage where she didnt even want to move into the house anymore because it was
damaging her family because of all the bickering about the neighborhood and what could
happen. She will be talking about the time she almost gave up on pursuing to move into the
house, when talking to Walter and his wife Ruth. Doesnt that sound like a woman giving up on
her dreams because thats exactly what she started to do until she talked to Walter and Ruth
about how much they needed the change and a new life.
The 14th amendment presented here is being ripped away from Walter Lee Younger Jr.
in denying him, his right to own property. African Americans have been deprived of their citizen
for over 2 decades and now that they are grants granted their citizenship and access to
life, liberty, and property people like Karl Lindner and the FHA is holding them back from that.
The Federal housing administration has been using policies like redlining, contract buying, and
block busting to keep African Americans from moving into white neighborhoods. This is still
segregation right before us. In supreme court cases like Plessy v. Ferguson where the court
decided that as long as the separate faculties for black and whites was equal then it was
constitutional. The Brown v. Board of Education case declared that No, the separate faculties
are not equal for both black and whites and that it was unconstitutional. Meaning that an African
American citizen should not have to deal with blockbusting and redlining anymore. But clearly it
is still going on.
Now Mr.Lindner in the eyes of some people might have did the right thing of offering to
buy the house from them, because in some places when an African American family move into a
white neighborhood it could stir up violence and created anti-black riots. Which make real estate
salesman lean towards using racial covenant which is the prohibition of selling houses to African

American. So yeah, maybe he was trying to lower the violence in his neighborhood but the fact
that you wanted to buy the house back from them is just wrong. This is the reason why some
African Americans give up on things so easily because there is always something hold them
back like racial covenant. A family of any color should be able to live wherever they want
because it is their rights Life, liberty, and property. If they have the money to pay off the bills
then there should be no problem selling them the house.
Today, the jury should find Lindner and the CPNA guilty of denying the younger family of
their 14th amendment because they have no power to do so. They are just a family trying to
have a better house to continue through life in. Walter is a hardworking man who is even trying
to create his own business so that he could bring income into the household. If that doesnt
seem like a family who deserved to finally own their own house, then I dont know what is. I
hope today you realize that Walter was only trying to better his family and give them a better life,
while Lindner and the CPNA was trying to take it away. Thank you.
