Its1953andyourcountryisneutral,thenallofasuddentheyareforcedtojointhe
Communistmeanwhilecountriesaredividingandfightingagainsttheopposinggovernment.In
19451989bothsuperpowers(UnitedStatesandSovietUnion)werefightingfordominance
aroundtheworld.TheUnitedStatesandtheSovietUnionwerebothdeterminedtospreadeither
Democracy(UnitedStates)orcommunism(SovietUnion)toothersmallercountriestoget
aheadinthefight.Althoughthecoldwarhadmanydifferenttensionstheunitedstatesandthe
sovietunionneverphysicallyfought.Atonepointtheydidgetclosetofightingintheevents
DivisionofBerlin,IronCurtain,CubanMissileCrisisandtheMarshallPlan.
TheDivisionofBerlindidnotonlyaffect2.5millionBerliners,italsocreatedagreater
tensionandadistrustbetweennations.AfterWWIInooneknewwhattodowithBerlin,sothey
divideditintofourseparatesectors(France,GreatBritain,Unitedstates,andtheSovietUnion)
(DocumentB:DivisionofBerlin).OnFebruary1945threeoutoffourofthesesectorsdecidedto
unitetogether,theSovietUnionwasunsatisfiedabouttheseforcesjoiningtogether.TheSoviet
UnionputuptheBerlinWall,thiscutoffallcommunications,transportsoffoodandsupplies,
roadsandelectricity.TheUnitedStatesdecideditwastimeforaction!TheBerlinWallwas
quitehardtogetoverandhelppeopleinneedso,theUnitedStatesusedtheairtogetitthere.
ThiswascalledtheBerlinAirlift,withthistheUnitedStates,FrenchandGreatBritainprovided

AlthoughtheDivisionofBerlincausedagreatamountoftensionthiswasnottheonlythingthat
cameclosetoNuclearWarfare.
AlthoughtheIronCurtaindividedEasternEuropeandWesternEurope,theIronCurtain
neverdividedthetensionthetwosectorshadagainstoneanother.WhenWinstonChurchill
madeaspeechabouttheboundaryChurchillstates,Behindthatlinelieallcapitalsofthe
ancientstatesofCentralandEasternEurope(DocumentA:IronCurtain).Thisspeechprovided
theUnitedStateswithinformationabouttheopposingsidesinEurope.Asononepartoftheline
wastheWarsawPact(SovietUnionandCommunistnations)andontheopposingsidewasthe
NATO(UnitedStatesandotherDemocraticnations).TheIronCurtaintookaplaceofdefence
betweenEuropeandothernations.AlthoughtheIronCurtainwasoneofthemanycomplications
oftheColdWar,itwasalsooneofthemanyreasontheUnitedStatesandtheSovietUnion
almostwentintonuclearwarfare.
DuringthetimeoftheCubanMissileCrisiswastheclosestthattheUnitedStatesandthe
SovietUnionevergottonuclearwarfare.OnJanuary1,1959FidelCastroassumespowerover
theCubanterritory.ThisiswhentheSovietUniontookachanceandinvadesCuba.Itwasno
longerthanayearwhenCubajoinedforceswiththeSovietUnion(December19,1960).Since
CubaisonlyacloseproximityawayfromtheUnitedStatestheSovietUnionknewwhereto
strategicallyplacethemissiles.OncetheUnitesStateslearnedwhattheSovietUnionwasdoing
theyacteduponitratherquickly.TheUnitedStatessentaU2(spymission)tocapturepictures
oftheplacementofmissiles.Therewas4missilesalongthelineofNorthernCuba,theUnited
Stateshadthreebases,twoontheedgeofFloridaandonedirectlyinCuba.Also,theUnited

StateshadanairandnavalblockadearoundallofCuba(DocumentG:CubanMissileCrisis).
NikitaKhrushchevsentalettertoPresidentKennedyabouttheCubanMissileCrisis,statingthat
theSovietUnionisupsetthattheUnitedStateswantsthemtowithdrawtheirweapons.Although
theUnitedStateshasweaponsdirectedandreadytofireattheSovietUnion(DocumentF:
CubanMissileCrisisLetter).AlthoughtheCubanMissileCrisiswascausingmasspanicinthe
UnitedStates,theSovietUnionandtheUnitedStatesworkedtogethertosolvethisproblem.
AlthoughtheColdWarhadmanydifferenttensions,UnitedStatesandtheSovietUnion
neverphysicallydeclaredwar.Atonepointtheydidgetclosetofightingintheeventson
DivisionofBerlin,IronCurtain,andtheCubanMissileCrisis.TheDivisionofBerlincreated
tensionbetweenthesenations.TheIronCurtaindividedwhichnationsareCommunistnations
andDemocraticnations.LastlytheCubanMissileCrisishelpedtheUnitedStatesrealizehowfar
theSovietUnionwillgotogetallies.
