Section Properties- Example (1)

1 Objective
To calculate the allowable axial strength of a member comprising multiple pieces given the
following data:
The design is based on AISI-NASPEC 2001 with 2004 supplement, using ASD method.
The member is consisted of two Standard Studs (600S200-54, 50 ksi) placed back-to-back and
two tracks (600T125-54, 50 ksi)
The wall height (L) = 10 ft.
Bridging Spacing = 5 ft
KxLx (Axial Compression) = 10 ft
Lateral Bracing @ Ly = @ Bridging Spacing
Torsional Bracing @ Lt = @ Bridging Spacing
The fastener spacing = 0 (full compatibility)
The effect of the standard punch-out (4" X 1.5") is not considered.

3 Calculation of Allowable Axial Strength

3.1 Allowable Axial Strength of Stud Pieces
The allowable axial strength of stud pieces is calculated on the basis of two pieces connected
back-to-back.

3.1.2 Effective Area

The effective area of one stud piece (Ae) at a uniform stress Fn = 34.0 ksi was calculated in
accordance with Chapter B of the AISI-NASPEC 2001 specification, and was found equal to
2
0.4469 in .

3.1.3 Allowable Axial Strength

The allowable axial strength of stud pieces (Pa-studs) can be calculated as follows:
Pn-studs = 2AeFn

(Eq. C4-1)

= 2 * 0.4469 * 34 = 30.3892 kips

Pa-studs = Pn-studs/c, where c = 1.8
= 16.883 kips

3.2.3 Allowable Axial Strength

The allowable axial strength of track pieces (Pa-tracks) can be calculated as follows:
Pn-tracks = 2AeFn

(Eq. C4-1)

3.3 Total Allowable Axial Strength of the Member

The total allowable axial strength of the member (Pa-total) is the algebraic summation of the
allowable axial strengths of stud pieces and track pieces, therefore;
Pa-total
