James 3:45
Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large
and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a
very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.
Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body. NIV
Do you get the comparison? What the rudder is to the
ship, the tongue is to the human body and the human life.
You dont have to be a nautical expert to know that the
man in charge of the rudder directs the course of the ship.
If the right man is in charge of the rudder, the ship will
make a safe journey and arrive safely in harbor. But if the
wrong man is in charge of the rudder and doesnt know
what he is doing, the ship is likely to be wrecked.
And thats how it is in your life and in mine. If the right
force is in control of our tongues well make a successful
journey through life and arrive at our destination safely.
But if the wrong force is in control of our tongues, we are
likely to make shipwreck. So remember, the way you use
your tongue is going to determine the course of your life.
Make it a principle to be positive: to express faith and
confidence, not doubt and fear; to be honest and not to
exaggerate; to speak the truth and to speak about other
people as you would have other people speak about you.
Because words are also seeds. If you sow bitter, critical
words you will reap them back in due course multiplied in
your own life.
So remember, be careful how you use that rudder that

directs your ship, the rudder thats your tongue. Ask God
for His help to use your tongue aright.

Proverbs 4:58
Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or
swerve from them. Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect
you; love her, and she will watch over you. Wisdom is supreme;
therefore get wisdom. Though it costs all you have, get
understanding. Esteem her, and she will exalt you; embrace
her, and she will honor you. NIV
There are some people whom we may love and admire and
seek to do good to, and yet in the end they will turn against us
and fail us and betray us. Its one of lifes tragedies to invest
your love and to give yourself to someone who ultimately
betrays you. But the advice of Scripture is: love wisdom. Devote
yourself to wisdom, she will not betray you, she will honor you,
she will uplift you, she will protect you. And wisdom comes from
the Word of God.
Wisdom is more important and more precious than all the
things that men seek after. Wisdom is like that pearl of great
price that Jesus spoke about: when the merchantman found it,
he went and sold all that he had and bought that one pearl. He
was a merchantman and knew the value of things. Thats how
wisdom is. Its a pearl of great price.
Even if it costs you all you have, the Scripture advises you
buy it. Give yourself to wisdom, devote your life to her, shell

never betray you. Shell exalt you, shell bring you to honor.
Your latter end will be better than your beginning.

Proverbs 3:1315
Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains
understanding, for she is more profitable than silver
and yields better returns than gold. She is more
precious than rubies; nothing you desire can
compare with her. NIV
Those words have always been very meaningful for me. In a
way, they sum up my life experience. As a boy, I was
always interested in wisdom. In my teens I became
interested in philosophy. Later I became a student, a
research student, and finally a professor of philosophy. I
was pursuing wisdom through my life, but it was a wisdom
that gave no real reward or return. It was a wisdom
without fruit.
And then in His mercy, God miraculously revealed
Himself to me. He opened up the pages of the Bible to
me. He gave me the gift of the Holy Spirit to interpret the
Scripture and there I found the source of true wisdom. A
wisdom that yields fruit, a wisdom that yields blessing
beyond our power to calculate or compute and I want to
give my personal testimony to you as you listen to these
words.
Truly, Blessed is the man who finds wisdom. She is

more profitable than silver, she is more precious than

rubies. Nothing you desire can compare with her. This is
the pearl of great price. The one thing thats worth more
than all of the other things in life. Its the finding of the
wisdom of God revealed in Scripture by the Holy Spirit.

Seek Wisdom
Proverbs 8:17
I love those who love me, and those who seek me find
me. NIV
If you determine to seek wisdom, you will find her. She
will not hide from you. She sets her conditions, but she is
willing to be found. Then she continues speaking:
With me are riches and honor, enduring wealth and
prosperity. My fruit is better than fine gold; what I
yield surpasses choice silver. NIV
The blessings that come with wisdom cannot be estimated.
And then wisdom describes the way to walk:
I walk in the ways of righteousness, along the paths of
justice, bestowing wealth on those who love me and
make their treasuries full. NIV
I believe the real important condition there to inheriting those
blessings and enjoying them is to love wisdom. Love is a
strong word. Love means putting wisdom first. It means
devoting time to wisdom. It means sacrificing other things

to achieve wisdom, but the reward is so great.

The fruit of wisdom is better than fine gold. What
wisdom yields surpasses choice silver. Riches and honor,
enduring wealth and prosperity. If our heart attitude
toward wisdom is right, then all these will be the outcome
of that relationship.
Make your mind up that you are going to love wisdom.
I would say it is right to love wisdom passionately. I
believe that many times, as Christians, we are too tepid,
we are too lukewarm. We need to have a passionate love
of wisdom.

Wisdom Hates Evil

Proverbs 8:1213
I, wisdom, dwell together with prudence; I possess
knowledge and discretion. To fear the LORD is to
hate evil. I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior
and perverse speech. NIV
Wisdom comes to us in the Scripture sometimes as a
person and speaks to us in a very personal tone of voice.
Wisdom presents to us a choice. Wisdom shows us the
dividing of the pathway the pathway of life and the
pathway of death. Wisdom warns us that if we are to walk

in the pathway of life we have to hate evil. There is no

room for compromise.
Those who are walking in that pathway cannot in any
way permit themselves to entertain the thoughts of evil.
We have to watch our own lives, our own behavior. We
have to guard against the things that wisdom hates.
Wisdom hates pride and arrogance. These are subtle
things that may begin to grow up in our lives without us
scarcely being aware of them. Evil behavior and perverse
speech these are things that wisdom hates, and if we
are to walk in the way of life we have to hate what wisdom
hates. We have to side with the Lord against sin and
iniquity, rebellion and deception. We have to dethrone
these things from our hearts and to make room there for
wisdom wisdom with prudence, with knowledge and
with discretion. We have to bear in mind continually that
all the counsel of wisdom, all the instruction and even the
admonition of wisdom is designed for our good.
