The symposium will start at 9:15 AM on June 20 and end with a farewell dinner on June 21

Participants are invited to submit abstracts for poster presentation on or before May 10,
2013. Poster size is 30x40 inches. Posters are in all areas of biotech drugs and medicine
from natural resources, ethnobotany and ethnopharmacology, and plant conservation.
Confirmed Speakers
Dr. Lourdes B. Cardenas
Lu is a Professor at the Plant Biology Division of the IBS at UPLB and has just delivered a
SEARCA Centennial Professorial Chair lecture on Defining UPLBs Role in Philippine Plant
Natural Products Research and Development in the early 21 st Century on February 26, 2013. Lus
research interests focus on Biotechnology of Plant Natural Products; medicinal plants Ethnobotany
and Identification; in vitro micropropagation and transformation. Lu obtained her Dr. rer. nat. Plant
Biotechnology from Heinrich-Heine-Universitaet Dusseldorf in Germany.
Mr. Tim Hughes
Tim is a Senior Director of Biotech Manufacturing at CSL-Behring (AUS) in Melbourne, Australia.
He is a highly motivated and experienced biotech professional with years of executive plant
management encompassing process development, start-ups, facility development, technology
transfer, process trouble-shooting and a wide-ranging industry consulting and operations excellence
leadership. Tim held executive level biotech plant management in the US, in Spain, and now in
Australia. He is also a lecturer at the University College Londons Advance Center for
Biotechnology for 17 years now. Tim obtained his B.S. (honors) in Biochemistry and Microbiology
from the University of East London.
Dr. Isagani D. Padolina
Gani is the Research Director of Pascual Laboratories, Inc. which is Philippines only local
pharmaceutical company with advanced herbal research facility. He was previously connected with
Pfizer and Wyeth in the US for research and development and consumer healthcare. He obtained his
Ph.D. in Natural Products Chemistry (Botany/Phytochem) from the University of Texas at Austin
and a B.S. Chem. from UPLB.

Dr. Isidro C. Sia


Dr. Sia is the Director of the Institute of Herbal Medicine at NIH UP-Manila and Professor of
Pharmacology and Toxicology of the UP College of Medicine. He is a member of the Governing
Board of the NRCP as Chairperson of the Division of Medical Sciences. He obtained his M.D.
degree from UPCM and a Ph.D. in Philosophy at Kobe School of Medicine. Dr. Sia is a community
doctor on Saturdays in Nueva Ecija, Pangasinan, and Rizal since 1982 and his research highlight the
potential use of traditional medicine through community pharmacology and ethnopharmacology. He
is called the role model and mentor of todays youth in medical research and service.
Dr. Victor B. Amoroso
Vic is a Career Scientist, a University Professor and Director of CEBREM in Central Mindanao
University, Musuan, Bukidnon. He received numerous awards and citations including the NASTOutstanding Young Scientist Award in 2001. He is an avid morpho-taxonomist, a fern expert, and
later branched out and championed biodiversity and conservation research in Mindanao. Vic and his
students and collaborators from here and abroad climbed the mountains in the Mindanao LTER sites
and uncovered new species of plants including the Nepenthes (pitcher plants). Vic obtained his
Ph.D. (Botany) from UP-Diliman and a B.S. Biology from Silliman University in which he is an
outstanding alumnus of both universities.
Dr. Annabelle P. Villalobos
Ann is a Research Fellow at Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research and Development (USA)
with 16+ years of extensive experience in biotech drug development: process modeling and
characterization, technology transfer, technical expert lead in face to face meetings with regulatory
agencies in EU and the US, authorship in major submissions, tech support to products in the market,
and as Quality Overall Summary Expert. Ann received numerous recognition notable are the J&J
Standards of Leadership, the Diamond Award, and Significant Achievement Awards. She opted for
an early retirement in 2011 to give back to the Philippines and currently Ann is under the DOST
Balik Scientist Program. Ann obtained her Ph.D. (Chem.) from the University of Cincinnati and a
postdoctoral fellowship from the University of Pennsylvania.

Symposium guest
Dr. Agnes D. Mejia
Agnes is currently the Dean of the UP College of Medicine. Agnes obtained her M.D. from the
UPCM and continued on a fellowship in Nephrology at the University of Cincinnati and the
University of Michigan. She returned back to the Philippines in 1990 and later became Chairman of
UPCM Department of Medicine. She pioneered the Sagip Buhay Medical Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit organization with the goal to literally save lives by immediately providing financial aid for
emergency medications and essential procedures for children and underprivileged patients without
red tape.Agnes consistently champions and upholds Towards Leadership and Excellence in
Community-Oriented Medical Education Directed to the Underserved.

Travel to Symposium Location


CMU, Musuan, Bukidnon is the venue for the symposium. CMU is in the municipality of Maramag
with a clearly visible landmark Musuan Peak
The closest airports are those in Davao and Cagayan de Oro with many direct flights from
Manila, Cebu, Iloilo, and other airports.
For those arriving by plane, a trip by land is required from either Davao or Cagayan de Oro City.
From Davao airport, you may take a taxi to the Ecoland Bus Terminal (P200-250 by meter).
Take a Cagayan-bound bus for the 154 km trip to Musuan (located after Maramag and before
Valencia). The land trip passes the scenic and high elevation Marilog Forest and Mt. Salumay
usually takes 3.5-4.5 hours and costs P330.

From the Cagayan de Oro airport, you may take a taxi to the Agora Bus Terminal in Cagayan de
Oro City (P200-250 by meter). Take a Davao-bound bus for the 126km trip to Musuan, located
after Valencia and before Maramag. The trip usually takes 3.5-4.5 hours (P230). An alternative
is to rent a vehicle from the airport all the way to Musuan. The fare should be agreed upon
before the trip.
Taxi costs approximately P3,000-P3,500
Van that seats 8-9 people usually costs P4,500-P5,000

Accommodations
Available within the CMU campus in Musuan and in Valencia City, which is 8kms away. Most of
the accommodations in Musuan are dormitory type.

Post-symposium Tours and Field Trips


Two optional post-symposium field trips will be offered: University Projects and Mt. Musuan Climb
(22nd June), and Mt. Kitanglad Range Natural Park (22-23 June). Please see attached sheet for
description of the field trips. Slots are limited and on a first come first serve basis. Early
registration is required.
