TASK 51-60-02-820-801-A
EFFECTIVITY: ALL
2.
General
(1)
This task gives the procedure to do the static balancing of the rudder.
(2)
Make sure that the rudder is statically balanced. The value that you got must always be less
than or equal to the operational limit. If the value that you got is more than the operational
limit, a dangerous flight condition can occur.
(3)
Operation Limit is the weight of the gravitational center up to aft edge of the rudder. The
maximum operation limit is 22,72 kg.
(4)
For permanent allowable damage and temporary allowable damage (fly-by) included in the
SRM, the static balancing of the rudder is not necessary.
NOTE: Assess the damage to the rudder with the information included in chapter 55
(pageblock 1) of this manual.
(5)
(6)
C.
For damage in the rudder not included in the SRM, contact Embraer.
B.
The static balancing of the rudder is necessary when the permanent allowable
damage and temporary allowable damage (fly-by) are not allowed per SRM.

WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT THE AIRCRAFT IS IN A SAFE CONDITION BEFORE YOU DO THE
MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES. THIS IS TO PREVENT INJURY TO PERSONS
AND/OR DAMAGE TO THE EQUIPMENT.
SUBTASK 940-002-A
(1)
Do the procedure to make the aircraft safe for maintenance (AMM TASK
20-00-00-910-801-A/200).
WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT THE RUDDER WILL NOT OPERATE ACCIDENTALLY.
AN ACCIDENTAL OPERATION OF THE RUDDER CAN CAUSE INJURY TO
PERSONS.
(2)
(3)
Clean the rudder with a clean lint-free wiper cloth soaked with MEK or CRC10900 or
solvent RHODIASOLVE E-23 or equivalent.
NOTE: Make sure that the rudder is free from dirt (grease, oil, adhesive tape, etc.).
Dirt can cause wrong results during the static balancing procedure.
(4)
Examine the rudder and make sure that there are no signs of damage. If you find
damage, refer to applicable section of the SRM.
NOTE: Make sure that the rudder is free from damage to its structure and surface
finish such as dents, damaged painting or others.
F.
Put the control-surface balancer assemblies (2) (GSE 367) on a level table (9).
Align and level them. Refer to Figure 501, Sheet 1 and Figure 501, Sheet 2.
NOTE:
(b)
Put the height gage indicator (4) at 326 1.0 mm (12.83 0.039 in). Refer to
Figure 501, Sheet 2.

(c)
Set the precision digital scale (8) to zero with the height adjustable support (6).
Refer to the instructions in the scale manufacturer's manual.
NOTE: Make sure that the precision digital scale (8) is correctly calibrated.
(d)
(2)
Remove the height adjustable support (6) from the precision digital scale (8).
Install the bolts (1) of the rudder hinge fitting 1 and 4 on the control-surface balancer
assemblies (2) (GSE 367). Refer to Figure 501, Sheet 2.
CAUTION: MOVE THE RUDDER CAREFULLY AND KEEP THE RUDDER STRAIGHT
DURING REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION. JERK AND SUDDEN MOVEMENTS
CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE RUDDER SURFACE OR INJURY TO
PERSONS.
(3)
Align the rudder (7) with the control-surface balancer assemblies (2) (GSE 367) in the
rudder hinge fitting 1 and 4. Refer to Figure 501, Sheet 1.
(4)
Install the rudder hinge fitting 1 and 4 on the control-surface balancer assemblies (2)
(GSE 367).
(5)
Put the height adjustable support (6) on the precision digital scale (8) according to
Figure 501, Sheet 1 and Figure 501, Sheet 2.
NOTE: Obey the distance of Figure 501, Sheet 1 and Figure 501, Sheet 2 to put the
support point into position.
(6)
Put the height gage (3) in front of the rudder trailing edge (5). Refer to Figure 501,
Sheet 2.
(7)
Carefully lower the rudder trailing edge (5) until it is supported by the height adjustable
support (6). Refer to Figure 501, Sheet 2.
(8)
Adjust the height adjustable support (6) until the rudder trailing edge (5) is aligned with
the height gage indicator (4). Refer to Figure 501, Sheet 2.
(9)
The rudder must be complete with all its exterior finishes and components installed
before you do the measurement.
NOTE:
Make sure that these rudder components are installed: access panels,
static discharger, and hinge pins.
Install all components of the rudder in their correct position and check if
they are properly attached to the vertical stabilizer.
Make sure that the rudder is painted, with its logos and strips on it, as
applicable.

(e)
Install the necessary amount of balance weights (AIPC 55-40-02) to the rudder
with the respective bolts, washers and nuts until the value read in the precision
digital scale (8) is less than or equal to operational limit.
NOTE: Do not tighten the bolts, washers and nuts.
If, after you add the balance weights, the static balance requirement is met, mark
the position of all the rudder balance weights and remove them.
