WALT We are learning to We are learning to

identify the fractions , , 1/3, 1/8, 1/5. We are
doing this by representing them in collections
with materials. We are also learning to solve
problems using fractions.

Monday 13/06/16 - 9:45am 10:15am

- Year 2/3 Give the students counting
markers. Ask them to show me half of the
counters. Establish that to have half of a
shape the object should be divided into
two equal parts. Continue with , 1/3,
1/8. Establish the terminology,
numerator denominator
vinculum.
- Make a link to the fractions
represented and how they are
written e.g. 1/2, 1/4, 1/3, 1/8

DOL Strategies:

Monday 13/06/16 12:15am 12:45am

- Draw shapes on the board. Square, circle,
rectangle, pentagon, diamond, book and
tree.
- Year two students to colour in half of
each shape. Then one quarter of each
shape.
- Year three students are to colour in the
different ways that each shape can
symbolise one half. They are to write the
fraction next to each shape. Then they
can continue to divide the shapes into
quarters, eigths and fifths.

I will have the strategy cards out.

Students are to chunk and spilt numbers
that I give to them on their student
whiteboards.

Warm up activity Year 2 and Year 3

Strategy One: Attitudes and

Perceptions.
Strategy Three: Extend and
Refine Knowledge
Strategy Four: Use Knowledge
Meaningfully.
Grouping Strategies:
Within class performance
grouping.

Students to use a student whiteboard and

a marker. Ask students to copy the dots or
shape off the board. Ask the students to
circle halves, thirds, quarters, fifths,
eigths. Then ask students to colour ,
2/3, 3/5, 5/8.
-

Main Activity

Year 3 Halves and quarters of a whole

worksheet. Hand sheets out and ask
students to put their names on them.
Mark their activity sheet as they finish.

Year 2 Give the year two students

fraction cakes. Trace around one of the
shapes and write the fraction on the
board. Then ask the students to trace
around them and write the fraction next
to them.

Lower Year 2 students Will need more

scaffolding than the other year two
students. Will need to help them with
writing the fractions.

Friday 17/06/16 12:15am 12:45am Year

Revise terminology of half. There are

two halves in a whole, if something is in
half then it has two equal parts. etc
Continue on from the first session. Ask
students to draw three shapes numerous
times outlining all the ways half can be
shown. For example, half can be shown
on a circle many times.

Classroom Management: Students are to sit at

their desks and not to be out of their seats.
Differentiation: The lesson is to be scaffolded to
accommodate for all levels of students in the
classroom. Differentiation will be evident
through two activities during the one lesson and
extra support to some of the year two students.

5 mins Revise with students the different

fractions that we went over this lesson.
Ask the students What are some of
the fraction that we covered this
lesson. Students will put their hands
up and should answer with , 1/3, ,
etc.

DOL Strategies:
Strategy Four: Use Knowledge
meaningfully.
Strategy Five: Habits of mind.

Resources
(Include equipment required for class and/or for teacher preparation)
Student Numeracy Books
Counting Markers
Student Whiteboards and whiteboard markers
Number Strategy cards
Fraction Cakes
Fractions Activity Worksheets Year 3

Safety Considerations/Materials
Students to sit at their desk and roam around the room. This will avoid any accidents with
scissors and disruptions to other students.

Assessment
Formative assessment to be conducted. Offer feedback to students on
the answers that they provide in relation to their learning of the content
of the lesson.
