The Difficulty of Entering Admission to International School of Engineering in
Chulalongkorn University (ISE)
Entering admission to the International School of Engineering (ISE) at
Chulalongkorn University is difficult due to its tight screening process and score
percentage. The purpose of this research report was to describe the difficulty of entering
admission to Chula International School of Engineering (ISE). The importance of this
research report is to provide admission guide for students who want to enter the
International Faculty of Engineering at Chulalongkorn University (ISE). The pieces of
information found in this research report were based on six sources: first, the website of
Chula International of Engineering (ISE) narrated its history. Next, an admission guide
book year 2559 named Admission ! - 59 published by Dek-d
Interactive Co., ltd showed the admission system in Thailand. Third, the website of
Chulalongkorn admission which explained the requirement and process of Chula
International School of Engineering admission. In addition, an article from Dek-D.com
provided why Chula International School of Engineering has less students who passed the
admission. Moreover, an article published by Dek-D.com described CU-TEP/AAT/ATS
exam. Finally, the website of Chulalongkorn Engineering introduced what each
interdisciplinary program is being studied about.

The Faculty of Engineering at Chulalongkorn University
Chula International of Engineering (ISE) website stated that Chulalongkorn
University was the first academy of higher learning officially of Thailand. It was
founded in March 1917 by King Vajiravudh (Rama VI). The name of the university was
an honor to the king's royal father. After the Civil Service, King Vajiravudh had thought
about it had achieved a level of excellence and realized that the education should not go
thru not only for the bureaucrats but also to all people in all levels. Therefore, the Faculty
of Engineering was first instituted on June 1, 1913 as the Engineering School (Yantara
Suksa School) of King Chulalongkorn's Civil Service College by King Vajiravudh.
Subsequently, it also became the Faculty of Engineering, in possibly one of the most
influential technology institutions in Thailand and increasingly gaining international
recognitions. Meanwhile, the college was also upgraded to the Chulalongkorn University
in March 26, 1917.
The International School of Engineering (ISE) started in 2005 by the faculty of
Engineering of Chulalongkorn University to provide interdisciplinary knowledge with
international experience. The school had offered the following interdisciplinary
programs: Bachelor of Engineering in Nano Engineering (NANO), Bachelor of
Engineering in Automotive Design and Manufacturing Engineering (ADME), Bachelor
of Engineering in Information and Communication Engineering (ICE), and Bachelor of
Engineering in Aerospace Engineering (AERO). In addition, all courses for the above
programs are conducted in English.

Admission System
According to an admission guide book year 2559 named Admission !
- 59 published by Dek-d Interactive Co., ltd stated that Admission or
Middle Admission has the same meaning, which is the middle system of accepting
students by Association of University Presidents of Thailand (AUPT). The duration is
between April - May every year. The Middle Admission will be launch after direct
receive is finished. Therefore, students who dont have the university to study should
enter the middle admission. The middle admission system can choose four places in any
universities and faculties by submitting their score. The score that can be used is O-NET,
GAT-PAT, and GPAX. This score can get it by registering the test with National Institute
of Educational Testing Service. Students can register first round in October and second
round in March (the following year).
Direct Receive or Direct Admission in Thai has the same meaning, which is
accepting students registration from whole country without using admission system.
This gave the opportunity to students who live near that university and also the students
who are interesting in that faculty seriously because it has required the minimum. There
are seven types of it that going to be happen in year 2560: First, using 9 conventional
subject and GAT-PAT. Second, using 9 conventional subject + their own test. Third,
using 9 conventional subject + their own test + GAT-PAT. Fourth, using GAT-PAT +
their own test. Fifth, using their own test only. Sixth, using 9 conventional subject only.
Last, using GAT-PAT only.

The Requirement and Process
The website of Chulalongkorn admission stated that International program is not
included in the admission system, it not uses GAT-PAT but use TOEFL, IELTS, and
SAT. For Chulalongkorn University, students can also use CU-TEP, CU-AAT, and CUATS. Students that can take the admission must study at grade 12 or equivalent. Below is
the English skill that required by the university:

Students can make the registration via www.ies.eng.chula.ac.th. They can choose
maximum four interdisciplinary programs. After that, bring the application form and
registration premise to Chulalongkorn International School of Engineering room 107
building 2 faculty of engineering. Registration premise is including three one-inch
pictures, transcripts, all skill test result, letter to certify student status, ID card copy, and
the registration copy. Then, the student who can process to an interview test will be
announced. After the interview test finished, the student who pass the admission and be
the ISE student next year will be announced. Below is the score percentage that be count:

CU-TEP/AAT/ATS Exam
An article from Dek-D.com stated that CU-TEP/AAT/ATS are an exam written
by Chulalonkorn University that can use instead of TOEFL, IELTS and SAT only at
Chulalongkorn University. CU-TEP is the test that can be used instead of TOEFL and
IELTS that really focus on grammar. The suggestion in this article was trying to test CUTEP first to see that the student can get 80 easily or not. If already tried many time and
the possible to pass CU-TEP score was low, the article suggested to use IELTS because
its easier than CU-TEP but cost more than (suggest for student who get CU-TEP 70 or
more than). The writing part is finding error, students can practice by using TOEFL
because its similar to CU-TEP but TOEFL may harder. The listening part in CU-TEP
has both British/American accent and Asian accent.
CU-AAT is divided into two parts, which is English and Math. For Math, it is
similar to SAT l (Math) but harder. Most of the question will be about Grade 9-10 Math
and algebra. What students have to be careful about is time. Time given is limited and the
question may trickery. It will take out point of that question if the answer is wrong.

CU-ATS is divided into two parts, which is Physics and Chemistry. CU-ATS
Nano uses the same test as CU-ATS but include Biology. Biology is harder than SAT
Biology but is easier than PAT. Physics is focusing on basic concept of every chapter and
is not complicated. This similar to SAT ll (Physics). As for Chemistry, its neither similar
to SAT nor PAT. The recommend for Chemistry is study SAT ll (Chemistry)
systematically. Likewise, the Calculation is not hard but take a lot of time. At last, it also
will take out point of that question if the answer is wrong.
Interdisciplinary Programs in ISE
The website of Chulalongkorn Engineering stated that Nano Engineering
(NANO) studies into the molecular composition of a substance, which is divided in two
main types that focus in the electronics and biological fields. Its one of the advances that
can impact to all manufacturing sectors: from heavy industries to small, and from
automobile and petrochemical to textile and clothing. This program is such an investment
and is truly multidisciplinary in order to coach students both the applied subjects of
electrical, chemical and materials engineering, the basic subjects of physics, chemistry
and biology. Thus, Nano-engineering program is formulated the capability to bridge the
gap of scientists who are too theoretical minded or engineers who are weak in Sciences.
Automotive Design and Manufacturing Engineering (ADME) will scope and
focus on the automotive industry. The ADME receives a good support from Toyota. This
is a truly worldwide business. The program is consisting of international multidisciplinary functions in high-tech engineering, manufacturing, design, research and
development, logistics, management & marketing. This program also trains students to

have a solid background in any field and provide flexibility to choose to specialize in any
topic/major.
Information and Communication Engineering (ICE) is studies of design,
implementation and maintenance of building systems or any controlled and processed via
computer. It covers both hardware and software of the system. Its consider a
combination of two sciences, which is a Computer Science and Electrical Engineering.
The study will aim at principle and theory, mathematical sciences, computer science and
engineering, as well as guiding principles such as applications to resolve technical issues
related to the design of the hardware, software networks and processes.
Aerospace Engineering (AERO) is divided in two main types, which is
Aeronautical Engineering and Astronautical Engineering. Aeronautical Engineering is
focus on the aircraft that works in the earth's atmosphere and Astronautical Engineering
is focus on aerospace working outside the Earth's atmosphere. Both of them are related to
design, create, and study the science behind the properties of strength and physical
properties of aircraft, missiles, aircraft and spacecraft. Its also covers aspects of
aerodynamics and behavior, the wing airfoil, the control surface flight, the lift, drag,
aerodynamic, and other features of them.
Conclusion
The purpose of this research report was to describe the processes and difficulties
of entering admission to Chula International School of Engineering (ISE). This research
also concluded that to enter Chula International School of Engineering (ISE) was harder
because of the requirement in English, Science, and Math proficiency score. Hence, this

research report recommends to further research on how to get good score in CU-ATS and
SAT ll (Physics and Chemistry).
