InitiallywhenitwasdecidedtobuildthethirdGodavaribridgetoreplacetheOld
GodavariBridge,theplanningwastoprovideforsuperstructuremadeofsteel.As
usageofconcreteasconstructionmaterialhadbecomepopularsinceitsintroduction
inthe1930s,theissueoftypeofsuperstructurewasreexaminedbytheIndian
Railways.Itwasdecidedtoexaminethepossibilityofevolvingaprestressed
concrete(PSC)bridgewitha97.55metres(320.0ft)span.Firmswereprequalified
forthepurposewithpreferredoptionssuggestedforsubmissionofoffers,steelgirder
orconcretegirder.Ofthethreefirmswhowereshortlistedtosubmitoffers,twofirms
optedfortheconcretebridgeoptionandonefirmforthesteelbridgeoption.Onthe
basisoftheseoffers,therailwayauthoritiespreparedtheTermsofReference
prescribingthedesigncriteria(asadoptedinsimilarotherPSCbridges),usingof
DesignCodes,bothInternationalCodes(likeBS:5400)andUICCodes.Thethree
firmswereaskedtogivetheircomments,andRDSOandRailwayBoardwerealso
askedtoindicatetheirviewsonthesubject.Followingthis,thedesigncriteriaforthe
bridgewasfinalised.Theoffersreceivedfromthethreefirmswereexaminedby
ProofConsultantswhorecommendedthatthedesignofferedbyM/s.Hindustan
ConstructionCompanyLtd.,(HCC),Mumbaibeaccepted.Thefirmhadproposed
thebowstringtypeconcretearchofspan92.552metres(303.65ft)withprestressed
concreteboxgirdertoactastie.Asthisofferwasfoundnotonlytechnicallyfeasible
butalsofinanciallyacceptable,theorderwasplacedonthemtoplan,designand
buildthebridge.

Features
TheintroductionofReinforcedCementConcrete(RCC)asaconstructiontechnique
forcivilengineeringstructures,startedin1930s,hasusheredmanyspecialtypesof
bridgesalso,builtinvariouspartsoftheworld,andthethirdGodavariArchBridge
isonesuchbridgeinIndiabuiltfortheIndianRailways.TheGodavariArchBridge
isofthebowstringgirdertypebridgecomprisingprestressedRCCtwinarches
(constantwidthof800millimetres(31in)withdepthofarchvaryingfrom1,700
millimetres(67in)atthespringingto1,150millimetres(45in)atthecrown)thatare
connectedlaterallywithRCCstruts(knownas)andPSCboxgirder.Thereare28
identicalspansoftwinarches,spacedat5,600millimetres(220in)eachof97.552
metres(320.05ft)widthfromcentretocentreofthepierswithatotallengthof2,745
millimetres(108.1in).Theeffectivespanfromcentretocentreofthebearingsis94
metres(308ft).Thetwinarchesareofidenticaldimensions(withaparabolicprofile)
madeinreinforcedconcrete(M45grade).ThePSCboxgirderisprovidedwith
footpathandhandrailsandotherrelatedcomponents.
Thefinaldimensionsoftheboxgirderare95.462metres(313.20ft)5,200
millimetres(200in)(bottom)withthicknessofthetopslabof296millimetres
(11.7in),thewebof300millimetres(12in)thicknessandwiththebottomslab
thicknesskeptat240millimetres(9.4in).Adiaphragmstiffenstheboxgirderateach
DinaHangerlocation.Thesubstructureofthebridgeconsistsof28piers.Thebridge
islocatedintwochannelsnamely,theKovvurchannelandtheRajahmundry

deposits.

Designaspects
ThesuperstructureofthebridgeisoftheBowstringGirdertype.ModifiedBroad
Gauge(MBG)1987loadconditionshavebeenadoptedforthedesign.Theloading
conditionsareforaxleloadof220.6KNwithEUDLof80.9KN.Theprojected
speedforthetrainsis160kmperhour.Undercyclonicconditionsthatmayprevailin
theareaduringcyclonicstorms,thewindspeedconsideredwithoutliveloadis200
kilometres(120mi)perhour,andwithliveloadthespeedconsideredis158
kilometres(98mi)perhour.Asthelocationofthebridgeisinthe,seismicloadhas
notbeenaccountedinthedesign.Thearchesaredesignedtoshare80%oftheDead
Load(DL)andLiveLoad(LL)transferredfromthehangersandthusaplaysa
crucialroleofrelievingtheflexuralandshearstressesonthegirder.Twelve(12)
sinkingsupportsareprovidedateachhangerlocationconnectingwiththegirder.
Theboxgirder,whichfunctionsasthedeckofthebridgeandcarriestheliveload,
comprisesenddiaphragm(1,000millimetres(39in)thick),whichhasinspection
windows.TheboxgirdersaremadeofM42gradeconcrete.Eachgirderis95.552
metres(313.49ft)longandwasprestressedwith16longitudinalcables,whichin
turnwereprestressedtoaforceof2950kNeach.(TheBBRVsystemofprestressing
wasusedforthepermanentstressingofgirderaswellastemporaryprestressing
duringconstructionunderthatbottomheadingtechnique.)However,thebottomof
theslabisprovidedwith24lateralcables(twoateachDinaHangerlocation)which
arealsoprestressed.Inthestubpartofthegirder,sixcablesareprovidedlaterally
anddulyprestressed.Theflexingofthegirdersisdirectlylinkedtothatofthearches,
asthetwoareconnectedbyhangersallalongitslength,at12locations.Thedesign
ofthegirderaccountsforloadingconditionsoffullspantrainload,halfspantrain
load,onethirdspantrainloadandsoforthwithdueaccountingoftemperature
variationof10C(50F).
Ateachstageofcastingofthegirders(sevenstagesofcastingwereinvolvedfor
eachgirderfromgirderstressingtoremovalofformwork)forcesgeneratedinthe
archsectionwerestudiedandaccounted,asrequired.Thegirdercastingalsoensured
thatnocracksappearedinthearchesatanystage.Particularstudywasalsodonefor
thebeginningpartofthearchknownas"startingstub",whichhas"distinctstructural
behaviourandhasdistinctfunction".Adoptingaframeworkmodel,thestubwas
checkedforcableforceintemporarytendonsasrequiredforconstruction.Thetop
deckslabwasdesignedbyanalysisof"striploadsarisingduetodispersionofaxle
loadsthroughsleeperandballast".
Eachspanofthebridgehas24hangers,furtherdividedundersixtypesdependingon
theirlength.EachDinaHangarisprovidedwith49numbersofhightensilesteel
wiresof7millimetres(0.28in)diameter.Thewiresthatrunparalleltoeachotherare
encasedinahightensilepolythenepipe,whichiscementgrouted.Basedondetail
analysis,thestressrangeforprestressingcablesoftheboxgirderwasdetermined.
Theboxgirderwasprestressedby"meansof16longitudinalcableswithatotalforce
of47177KNandwithlateralcablesateachhangerlocationinthebottomslab."

Thebridgehasbeenprovidedwithpotbearings.Oneachpier,thegirderissupported
onfourpotbearingsofthreetypesnamely,thePNatypebearing(whichfacilitates
freeslidinginbothdirections)ononepierandPNetype(slidesonlyinonedirection)
inthesucceedingpierandPNtypewhichisfixedtype.ThePNaandPNetypeof
bearingshavebeenpresetfro60millimetres(2.4in)movementinthelongitudinal
directionand10millimetres(0.39in)inthelateraldirectionandthecentrelineof
topplatehasbeenfixedrelativelyby60millimetres(2.4in)/10millimetres(0.39in)
withrespecttocentrelineofbottomplateofthebearingwhichwillpermitthe
movementsduetocreep,shrinkageandelasticdeformation.Theirplacementensures
thatonlylongitudinalmovementtakesplacewithoutpermittinganylateralmoment.
Thepotbearingswhichsupportthegirderareof1050tonnescapacity.Threesetsof
bearingswereimportedfromSwitzerland,whilethebalancebearingsweremadeby
M/s.BBR(India)Ltd.

LiveLoadtestwascarriedoutusinghydraulicjacks(toapplypointloads)withload
appliedinstagesdulynotingallparametersofdesignsuchasdisplacementinthree
directions(DX,DYandDZ)atallstrategiclocationsofthearchandthegirder.It
wasnotedthattheobservedresultsshoweda95%correlationandwasinferredthat
"thebehaviourofthebowstringgirderandvariousassumptionsmadeduringdesign
werereasonablyestablished."

Afterthebridgewasconstructed,therailwayauthoritiescarriedoutsettlement
studiesofall28piersinviewofthefoundationconditionsonwhichtheywere
founded.Thesemeasurementsindicatedthatpiersettlementinonlyonepier,namely
"pier27"intheKovvurChannelwasoftheorderof211millimetres(8.3in),which
neededcorrectiveaction,whileinallotherpiersthesettlementwaslessthan75
millimetres(3.0in)indicatingthatpierfoundationshadsettleddown.Sincethe
rotationintheverticalplaneexceededtheprescribedvaluefordifferentialsettlement,
BBR,consultantstoHindustanConstructionCompany(HCC),anticipatedthatthe
topplateofthebearingis"likelytouchthebottomplatetherebydamagingthe
bearing."Toremedythesituation,theconsultantadvisedHCC,tomaintainauniform
gradientof200millimetres(7.9in)betweenthepiers26,27and28.However,the
liftingofbearingsby200millimetres(7.9in)wasexecutedduringthemonthofMay
2003,eventhoughthesettlementofthepierinquestionwasnotsignificantafterMay
2002.ThiswasachievedbyusingConbextraHES(whichhaspropertiesoffreeflow,
achievinghighearlystrengthandquicksetting),acementationmaterial
manufacturedbyM/s.FOSROC,India.Thegapof200millimetres(7.9in)between
thepedestaltopandbottomofbearingwasfilledwiththismaterial.Thiswasdone
bycarefulplanningofstoppingtrainoperations(bytakingtwobreaksofshort
intervals)overthebridgeduringtheperiodofrectificationsupportedbyeight400
tonnescapacityhydraulicjackswithlocknutandshimplatesarrangement.

EastandWestGodavaridistricts.Stretchingfor
SunsetovertheGodavaririver
threekilometers,andconstructedwithstone
withtheHavelockBridgein
masonryandsteelgirders,thisbridgeservedthe
thebackground
trainsplyingbetweenMadras(Chennai)and
Howrah(Kolkata).Withincreasedtrafficinfreight
andpassengers,arailcumroadbridgewasbuiltacrosstheriver'sdownstreamwas
inauguratedbythethenpresidentofIndiaDr.FakruddinAliAhmedin1977.Athird
railwaybridge,theTheGodavariArchBridge,wasbuiltbetween1991and1997.It
wascommissionedforpassengertrafficinMarch1997andbecamefullyoperational
forrunningtrainsbytheIndianRailwaysfrom2003,asthebridgebuiltin1897was
foundnotsuitableforrailwaytrafficanymore.TheDhowleswarambridgeacross
GodavariissevenkilometerssouthofRajahmundry.OnthebanksistheRallabandi
SubbaRaoMuseumdisplayingcoins,sculpture,pottery,inscriptionsandpalmleaf
manuscripts.
RajahmundryisalsoamajorHindupilgrimagesites,withanumberoftempleslike
theKotilingalu(10millionSivalingas)templeonthebankofGodavari.Ithostsholy
congregationscalledPushkaramsheldonceevery12yearsandconsidered
auspicioustotakesinriddingholydipswiththelastinAugust2003,whenaround
34millionaresaidtohavetakenthebath.Thisfestivallastsfor12daysandpeople
offerprayersandmakeofferingstotheirdepartedfamilymembers.Ahugeand
beautifulKrishnatemplehasbeenconstructedbytheISKCONfoundationonthe
banksofGodavari.PopularlycalledasGowthamiGhat,itisamajorattractionfor
youngpeopleasarecreationalcenter.
