INTRODUCTION

The Bachelor of Science in Economics (BSE) curriculum is

designed to develop men and women for various
management
positions
in
business
and
financial
establishments,
government
offices,
non-government
organizations and other related institutions.
This manual will provide guidelines for the students, faculty
and participating offices in order to make the practicum
program meaningful and relevant.
It contains, among
others, a description of the program, course requirements,
expectations and responsibilities of the stakeholders--- the
students,
the
University
and
the
participating
establishments.
Page | 1

The practicum program provides opportunities for the

students to learn more about different organizations,
including best practices from the people in the workplace
and to discover their particular field of interest. The program
also enables the students to put into practice concepts
learned in class.
The role of the University is to provide basic theories,
principles and procedures. Also, it aims to instill further
among the students the importance of values such as
service, excellence and leadership. Business and financial
establishments,
government
offices,
non-government
organizations and other related institutions participating in
the program contribute a generous share to the professional
development of these economists by providing good role
models who will share their ideas, their insights and
expertise in problem-solving situations.
This manual shall serve as a source of information and
guidance to all concerned.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
During practicum, the students are assigned to participate in
different private and government offices/institutions where
they are given exposure to actual work experiences in
various aspects of economics.
The students are required to enroll in their respective
practicum program after satisfying the pre-requisite subjects
in the four-year course in order for them to better appreciate
the work situations they will exposed to. For the Bachelor
of Science in Economics, students must pass all major
subjects in 3rd yr., 1st semester of the school year.
Page | 2

Ideally, students are encouraged to finish all academic and

non-academic requirements of the program curriculum,
including Physical Education and NSTP, before taking
practicum.
Students are encouraged to finish these
requirements, as some practicum students may get
absorbed into the participating private and government
offices/institutions even during their practicum.
Institutions may prefer students who have accomplished all
academic and non-academic requirements since they view
practicum students as a pool of trainees from which they can
hire future employees.
Recommended Practicum Timetable
Ideally, every student should be able to undergo
training in almost all the departments of each of
the division in the work station. In reality, many
participating practicum stations limit the number
of areas a student is exposed to. This is due to
several factors such as, a) the limited number of
time allotted for practicum, b) the number of
student practicumers in a given station and, c)
policies of the participating work stations on
confidentiality, etc.
There are training managers/supervisors who will
take into consideration the interest and the
capabilities of student practicumers prior to
assigning them to various departments. For this
reason, the student should be prepared to present
the recommended timetable for practicum to her
training manager and indicate her preference for
areas to train in when requested for.
Participating work stations require students
to train for eight (8) hours per day and five (5)
Page | 3

days a week. This number of working hours per

day is applied during summer.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PRACTICUM PROGRAM

Exposure to the different work situations is designed to
enable students to experience and observe the practical
application of theories learned in the classroom.
At the end of the course, the student should be able to:

REQUIREMENTS OF THE COURSE

A. Pre-Practicum Seminar Attendance
A pre-practicum orientation seminar is provided prior to
actual practicum.
This orientation program will prepare the students for
practicum and will discuss, in detail, the requirements
needed prior to and after the program. Listed below are
some topics covered during the sessions:
Page | 17

1. Course Description, Objectives and Application

Requirements
2. How To Prepare Your Resume
3. How To Conduct Yourself During An Interview
4. Expectations During On-the-job Training
B. Mock Interview
Part of the practicum coordinators role is to prepare the
student for an interview, either prior to practicum or for a
job interview after the practicum period. This session
carries 5% of the students practicum grade.
In the course of the interview, the students are given
questions to answer to rate their abilities, personality,
enthusiasm, and physical appearance. Corporate attire is
required of the students who attend these interviews. At
the end of the session, Practicum Coordinator shall share
his comments with the students and provide some
constructive criticism for further self-improvement. The
student is also given an opportunity to ask questions to
the interviewer on his particular field, especially if the
interviewers career interests the student.
C. Performance Appraisal Reports
This form has been developed to monitor the students
performance at work. A copy of the appraisal form is
given to the supervisor or manager assigned to look over
the student. This is 50% of the practicum grade. At the
end of the training period, this performance appraisal form
is filled up, sealed and picked up by the student, who in
turn, submits the filled up forms sealed to the Practicum
Coordinator. This appraisal form may be discussed with
the student.
D.Daily Accomplishment Report
Page | 18

Each student is required to keep a journal to write on

during practicum.
This is where informal notes on
procedures, equipment, policies, and comments on
situations.
These notes will assist the students in
preparing the practicum report.
This journal will be
checked during the visits made by the practicum
coordinator and will be submitted together with the
practicum report at the end of the practicum period.
E. Certificate of Completion
A certification of completion issued by the participating
work station is required after the students have completed
their practicum. The certificate must indicate the full
name of the student and practicum period. This is written
on a document bearing the establishments logo and
signed by the HRD or Training Manager.
F. Sample Output
The culmination of the students practicum training is the
preparation of their individual practicum report. This
report will contain at least two case studies which
will provide the student an opportunity to
demonstrate his case writing ability. There will be
many situations encountered where what should be is not
and what should be done is not what is done. These are
interesting problem situations that the student may
choose to write about and evaluate. There are actual
facts and information on many situations provided for by
practicum, such as manuals with the company mission
statement, goals, standard operating procedures,
organizational charts, actual set-ups of various sections.
These information in combination with the theories,
readings and notes taken up in the various courses taken
in the classrooms that are relevant to the problem; and in,
some situations even the students inputs based on his
Page | 19

core values will help him formulate a case to study,

evaluate and make recommendation on.
This report
carries a 20% weight in the practicum grade.
Note:
Case topics are subject to approval of practicum
coordinators based on gravity, frequency or
number of personnel involved.
1. Presentation of the Case
Present the case following this format.
Discuss major objectives and functions of the
department in one short paragraph. Then write about
the case background (A simple story or case facts that
will give a picture of the problem you are going to
solve.) As much as possible, discussions should be
written using short and simple sentence. When using
graphs, sketches, tables, job descriptions lifted from
manuals, flow charts, etc., you may present this as part
of your exhibit or visual aid.
I.

Point of View
A careful study of some social unit (as a

corporation or division within a corporation)

that attempts to determine what factors led
to its success or failure

II.

Statement of the Problem

The statement of the problem may be in
interrogative or declarative form; the number
of the specific questions or problems will give
a complete development of the study. It
should be formatted first before conducting
the research and developing the software.
Page | 20

The focus of the problem will be on the

inadequacy of the current/existing study.
III.

Objective
It is where the significant contribution of the

result of the study is enumerated. Such

contribution may be viewed from the point of
the target beneficiaries like the researcher
himself, service, society etc. It indicates who
are the different groups of beneficiaries, how
will each group benefit from use of the study.

IV.

Alternative Courses of Action (ACA)

Refer to possible solutions to the defined
problem. Each ACA must be able to solve the
problem and attain the objective. Must be able
to come up with at least two or three ACAs from
which to choose the best solution/ACA.

V.

Areas of Consideration (Analysis of the Case)

Refers to internal and external factors or
environment mentioned in the case study
and that can positively or negatively affect
the resolution of the problem or case under
study.

VI.

Analysis of the Courses of Action

Refers to the analysis of each ACA
considering the factors stated in the areas of
consideration (SWOT) and assumptions.
State the PROs and CONs of each ACA.
Page | 21

VII.

Recommendation
Recommendations are directed at solving
whatever strategic problems the work station
is facing and at improving its future
operations. Your recommendations should be
in line with your analysis; that is, they should
follow logically from the previous discussion.
For example, your recommendation generally
will center on the specific ways of changing
functional, business, and corporate strategy
and organizational structure and control to
improve organizational performance.

2. Conclusion
Discuss this in terms of the objectives of the practicum
training program and the learning experiences brought
about by the recent training. Any recommendations
towards improving the practicum program in the
assigned institution may also be mentioned here.
3. Bibliography
Indicate all reference books, manual or textbook used
to explain any section of the report.
G.Practicum Manual
1. Guidelines in Report Preparation
a. Reports should be handed in on the deadline
set. Deadline is 20-calendar days after the last
day of practicum.
Upon submitting all the
requirements, a receipt must be prepared by the
student as proof of submission.
The practicum
Page | 22

coordinator receives the report by signing the

receipt.
Students who submit their report late will be
penalized, by corresponding deduction on the report
grade.
A student who wishes to graduate during the
practicum semester should make sure to
submit his report on or before the last day of
the final exams for graduating students set by
the university in order to be included in the
candidates for graduation.
b. Photographs, charts, drawings, brochures, business
forms, procedures lifted from manuals may be used
as exhibits, included in the text or body of the report
or included in the appendix section to illustrate
specific problems or emphasize certain points.
These should be properly labeled.
Avoid
including personal photos with the staff that do not
serve any purpose of supporting any discussion or
point in the report.
c. Remember that the practicum report is a technical
paper, and as such, the language and tone should be
formal and appropriate.
H.Site Visit
The practicum is a supervised program which necessitates
practicum coordinators to visit students at their assigned
training station. The visit is an opportunity to discuss with
the training manager or department heads of the
establishments concerns regarding the practicum student
and vise versa. This also provides an opportunity for the
University to assess what else is necessary to enhance the
practicum program.
Page | 23

I. Practicum Outside Manila

In situations where practicum outside Metro Manila is
preferred, the student must seek the practicum
coordinators approval first and prove that he can
personally arrange his placement in his proposed
establishment.
The student shall then shoulder the
transportation and accommodation expenses of the
practicum coordinator during the site visit. All pertinent
arrangements associated with the site shall be the sole
responsibility of the student. Such arrangements include,
but
are
not
limited
to,
transportation
details,
accommodation (if necessary), meeting with the Human
Resource Manager or his designated representative, et
cetera.
Verify with responsible office in PUP
whether this is allowed. If not, disallow practicum
outside Metro Manila.
On site visits involving two or more students in one
location, the student are encouraged to share the
necessary costs among themselves to minimize expenses
on their part.
