expertise will underpin a high-profile

series of performances, exhibitions,
publications and events, including a
special Kings Shakespeare Festival. Our
aim is to underline the extraordinary
impact Shakespeares writing has had
not only in the theatre but across the
full range of artistic forms.

Kings is one of the worlds leading

centres of research in the Arts and
Humanities, situated at the heart of a city
with a globally important concentration
of Arts and Humanities scholars.

Europeanness on film
Kings alumnae Dr Alissa Timoshkina,
Dr Mariana Liz and Dr Mary Harrod
published the first book to explore
Europeanness in cinema. It aims to
identify the distinctive character of
European cinema, both in films and as
a critical concept, asking: what place
does European cinema have in an
increasingly globalised world? The
idea for the book came out of a
conference organised at Kings in 2010,
which was sponsored by the Kings
Roberts Fund, the Department of Film
Studies and the University Association
for European Studies.

On Her Majestys Service

Scholars from across the faculty
(including research students) are
working on a project with the Royal
Archives to digitise the papers of King
George III and other Hanoverian
monarchs, only a small fraction of
which have previously been published.
Launched by Queen Elizabeth II at
Buckingham Palace in April 2015,
this ground-breaking work will shed
much new light on Georgian Britain, its
monarchy and empire during a time of
profound cultural, political, economic
and social change.

We have great strengths in all our disciplines, including

relatively new fields such as Digital Humanities
and Culture, Media and Creative Industries. This
impressive diversity is the basis of a distinctively rich
and intellectually stimulating environment for research
of the very highest quality and significance. Our research
engages with questions of fundamental importance to our
understanding of the past, present and future. It helps us
make sense of what it means, and has meant, to be human.
With over 450 students we are home to one of the
largest populations of postgraduate research students in
the country and aim to make a difference through our
research. We seek to engage with key questions beyond
the walls of the university, building partnerships with
cultural organisations, businesses and charities to share our
knowledge. Our expertise helps inform and shape policy
in the UK and beyond. We also reach out to the public
through talks, film screenings and other events, including
our own Arts & Humanities Festival. The impact of the
facultys research in the wider world was acknowledged
in the recent Research Excellence Framework (REF, 2014),
which judged 99 per cent of our research to have had an
outstanding (4*) or very significant (3*) impact.

Groundbreaking research
to prevent peanut allergy
A study led by Professor Gideon Lack
and published in the New England
Journal of Medicine was the first to show
that consumption is an effective strategy
to prevent food allergy, contradicting
previous recommendations.
For many years, public health
guidelines, paediatricians and allergists
have recommended avoiding foods in
infants diet that cause allergies such as
peanuts. However, new evidence from
Professor Lacks LEAP (Learning Early
About Peanut Allergy) study shows that
the majority of infants at high risk of
developing peanut allergy are protected
from peanut allergy at age five years
if they eat peanuts frequently, starting
within the first 11 months of life.
With incidence of food allergy rising
dramatically in recent decades, this
research is more vital than ever.

Professor Debra Bick (centre) with

colleagues from the Hospital Municipal

attended a PEARLS training day

A European team of researchers, including Dr

Jo Armes from the Florence Nightingale Faculty
of Nursing & Midwifery, are undertaking
a programme of research called eSMART
(Electronic Symptom Management using ASyMS
Remote Technology). eSMART is funded
by the European Unions Seventh Framework
Programme.
The project uses mobile phone technology to
monitor patients remotely who are undergoing
chemotherapy to treat breast, bowel and blood
cancers, and to allow them to report side-effects
from their chemotherapy. The information is
sent securely to a computer, which assesses their
symptoms and triggers alerts to doctors or nurses
within minutes if the patient requires a specialist
intervention, while also providing patients with
real-time information and advice on how to manage
their symptoms at home, without the need to travel
to hospital. Researchers believe that using ASyMS
will reduce the side-effects of chemotherapy
and help to identify and treat those that are
life-threatening much quicker than current care
systems. In addition, it is anticipated that the use of
ASyMS will significantly reduce healthcare costs.

Improving outcomes of birthrelated perineal trauma

Thousands of women giving birth each year in
the UK sustain trauma to their perineal body,
either spontaneously or following an episiotomy.
A research team, co-led by Professor Debra
Bick, conducted the largest study to date, the
PEARLS study, which recruited over 3,000
women across the UK, to see if use of evidencebased practice to manage perineal trauma by
midwives and obstetricians could be improved.
Some maternal health outcomes were improved
and use of evidence-based practice increased.
The PEARLS training materials are now
available online to all members of the Royal
College of Midwives and Royal College of
Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. The PEARLS
team continues to train clinicians in the UK and
internationally, most recently in Brazil
and Australia.

New study sheds light on

development of anxiety
within families
Childhood trauma gets
under the skin
Research published by the IoPPN and
National Institute for Health Research
(NIHR) Maudsley Biomedical Research
Centre (BRC), has discovered that longterm changes in immune function caused
by childhood trauma could explain
increased vulnerability to a range of health
problems in later life. The study, published
in Molecular Psychiatry, found heightened
inflammation across three blood biomarkers
in adults who had been victims of childhood
trauma. High levels of inflammation
can lead to serious and potentially lifethreatening conditions such as type 2
diabetes, cardiovascular disease as well as
the onset of psychiatric disorders.

According to new research from the IoPPN,

living together could be the main source of
similarity for anxiety between family members,
over and above genetic links between them. The
study is the first of its kind to explore the role of
genes versus environment on familial patterns of
anxiety and in particular how anxiety is passed
from parents to adolescent offspring. The findings
give hope to parents with anxiety disorders that
in spite of genetic influences on the condition,
it will not necessarily afflict their children and
could be prevented by promoting resilience.

annual cost of the full-time fee.
They are listed in the online

Some research students are also
charged a bench fee in addition to
the tuition fee to cover the cost of
consumables and equipment used
during research. Check with your
faculty whether this is applicable
to you.

48

If you require a student visa to study in

maximum of nine months to cover living

have to show more and we advise that
you have access to more funds than
this in order to cover all costs and any
emergencies that may arise.

How to pay - installments

and deposits
Fees are payable in two equal
installments on 31 October and 31
January or 14 days from the date of the
invoice if later. Some programmes have
a fee deposit scheme. When you are
offered a place, you are advised whether
or not a deposit is required (usually 10
per cent of the fee).

VOICE OF THE STUDENT

I found the programme very helpful for improving
my academic English, in particular learning to write
postgraduate essays. I also got used to participating in
lectures at higher academic level and improved my
listening skills. The course gives you the opportunity to
get to know the UK academic system too, which in my
case, was very different to my home country. By the
time I finished, I felt much more confident and ready
to start my masters degree.

VOICE OF THE STUDENT

I strongly recommend these preparation programmes
to international students, even if you already meet the
English language score for your main course.
Postgraduate-level writing skills are different from
the IELTS essay. You need academic analysis to be
able to explain your opinions objectively, and the
Pre-sessional will help you develop these skills in an
efficient way. In fact, I still go back to the materials of
the course when I am writing my masters essays!

One of the things I enjoyed about my programme is
how self-directed it is, you can tailor the programme
to your interests, and the interdisciplinary nature of

History

THE ENTHUSIAST
I became interested in the history of war because I
am of a generation whose parents served in World
War II. My father, uncle and all my friends fathers
served in the war and they never talked about it.
It was this mysterious world that I was not allowed
to enter.
I developed a really strong interest in trying to find
out what they experienced. This led me to study
military history. I want to record what these people
did, the sacrifices they made and what they went
through so that its not forgotten.
I graduated from my last degree 40 years ago. The
first advice I would give to other mature learners is
dont be frightened. You can do this and coming back
is easier than youd think. Kings is so welcoming to
mature students and my professors were always
available when I needed advice and guidance. If
youve thought about returning for a degree do it,
its worth it!

VOICE OF THE STUDENT

Kings MMus has definitely offered me high-quality
teaching in a variety of subjects and the chance to
develop my own ideas and research skills under the
supervision of an expert in the field. To add to my
great experience of the MMus, the universitys
location is only minutes away from many of the
countrys best classical music and opera venues
a music student could hardly ask for more!

VOICE OF THE STUDENT

I chose Kings because I felt that the wide-ranging
expertise on offer and the variety within the course
would be more suitable to me than another course of
only composition. As a composer at Kings you take
two modules with the musicologists, and Ive found
that my academic studies have fed into my
composition and enhanced my work in ways I
couldnt have predicted.

Philosophy

Philosophy

We cover all major areas of

philosophy, with particular
strengths in history of philosophy,
philosophy of mind/psychology,
metaphysics, epistemology,
philosophy of language, ethics/
action theory, epistemology and
philosophy of medicine.
We capitalise on this by offering four different
masters programmes, geared equally to
philosophy graduates and conversion students,
and boasting an unrivalled range of optional
modules in these areas and more. Supervision
of our research students (whether pursuing
the two-year MPhilStud or the three-year
MPhil / PhD) is carefully tailored to their own
individual needs. But philosophy is teamwork,
making progress by working through
problems together via argument and debate:
so we also run special weekly seminars where
postgraduate students gather to share ideas,
plus numerous informal reading groups across
a warm, collegial and inclusive department.

VOICE OF THE STUDENT

The first thing that stood out to me about Kings was
the sheer number of opportunities for pursuing my
studies. Being in London and at a well-established
university has its advantages. Aside from providing
a comprehensive list of modules, there is always an
abundance of extracurricular activities on hand.
Specially, there is a huge amount of reading groups,
conferences and departmental presentations
available for me to pursue my individual interests.

lively academic community, combined with the

THE ACADEMIC
Ive been at Kings since 1995 I came here to study
and I never left!
Before coming to Kings, I qualified as a dentist and
worked in general practice and community dental
service for about four years. What got me interested
in the Conservative Dentistry MSc was the chance to
actually build a patients smile.
Im now Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Dental
Institute. Its lovely to be able to treat patients, teach
students and do the research that Im really interested
in at the same time.
One thing that Kings has taught me is the idea of
life-long learning. It doesnt stop. You can always
carry on learning in order to get to the point where
you really do enjoy what you are doing, at the same
time as being really good at it.

THE CAREER BUILDER

Im from France, so learning about another legal
system in another country was very interesting and
a real challenge in the beginning. Im proud to have
coped with it and to now be using it every day in
the office.
Addressing fictitious disputes for exam papers as a
student is quite a different experience to dealing with
actual cases, but they prepared me well for practising
law in the real world. Ive found it challenging and
intellectually stimulating, especially in my field of
securitisation.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of my time at
Kings was gathering with my fellow students in a
caf after our lectures, ordering a pot of tea and then
exchanging our thoughts and ideas.
Studying in central London, learning from topquality teachers, making great friendships and
achieving your goals is an experience I would wish
for anyone.

VOICE OF THE STUDENT

Im working on the development of novel magnetic
resonance imaging (MRI) pulse sequences to improve
the detection of breast and pancreatic cancer cells by
MRI with iron-based contrast agents. The division is
just as multidisciplinary as my project, in my group
there are computer scientists, physicists, biologists and
chemists. There is always an expert at hand that I can
approach for advice, and both my supervisors are
world-renowned experts in the field of MRI.

VOICE OF THE STUDENT

With a chemistry background and an interest in
medical imaging, this MSc was the obvious choice,
giving me the chance to learn about the underlying
physics and biochemistry required to become an
imaging scientist. The availability of funding for the
programme was an added bonus, and the links between
Kings, several hospital departments and industrial
organisations have provided opportunities to undertake
work experience and meet potential employers.

THE INTERNATIONAL
EXPERIENCE SEEKER
Im really enjoying my life in London. Everyone
is nice and willing to help me get used to my new
life here. I did my undergraduate degree in China,
but chose Kings for my postgraduate degree due to
its reputation for Pharmacy & Pharmacology and
Kings Health Partners.
China is entering a time of reformation, so I want
to get involved in the NHS to gain the knowledge to
help Chinas medical reform. I want to be a clinical
pharmacist in China and while studying my
masters have decided to take a PhD at Kings
to achieve this dream.
Working at Guys, St Thomas and Kings College
hospitals means I can gain clinical knowledge,
communicate with clinical experts and learn about
the NHS, which is one of the key reasons I chose to
study in the UK.

THE YOUNG
PROFESSIONAL
I had been working for several years before I came
to Kings, but postgraduate study has always been
one of my goals.
Im a software engineer for a company called
Haemonetics, and worked part time throughout
my full-time Computing & Security MSc course at
Kings. It wasnt easy, but I enjoyed being back in
academia and having the chance to do research.
Security is something that is always important
within any kind of information system. The
knowledge I gained during my MSc will always be
useful to me, both in my current job and in the future
when I may look for a role thats more involved in the
area of security.
At Haemonetics, I now work on software that
manages the distribution of blood within NHS
hospitals. We make sure that the right blood gets to
the right people at the right time for transfusions.

THE CAREER CHANGER

While studying my undergraduate degree in
media technology, which involved working in
TV and radio studios, I chose to volunteer with
St John Ambulance in my spare time. I became
interested in medicine and helping people, and
made the decision to study nursing at Kings
before I finished my first degree.
While I was studying at Kings, I joined the
Territorial Army and spent three months working
at a hospital in Camp Bastian, Afghanistan. It was
a unique experience and made me realise that I
didnt want to be a ward nurse.
While I was in Afghanistan, I applied for my
current job at Kings College Hospital working
in the Emergency Department. After my tour, I
progressed to Senior Staff Nurse and now do a job
share where Im 50 per cent clinical and 50 per
cent research nurse.
Studying nursing at Kings opens up a lot of
opportunities and has helped guide my career
choices and progression.

Child & Adolescent Psychiatry

Child & Adolescent

Psychiatry
Based at the Institute of
Psychiatry, Psychology &
Neuroscience, the department
is world-renowned for its
progressive research in the area
of child psychiatry, and our
programmes are taught by leading
academics in the field.
Children live through multiple periods of
critical, sometimes chaotic, development
affecting the way they think, feel and perceive.
Our goal is to understand in principle how
childhood disorders are distinct from their adult
equivalents. We then apply those principles
to prevention, diagnosis and treatment. We
provide the essential link between state-ofthe-art science and its translation into clinical
services, strengthened by our pivotal role
within Kings Health Partners, and our staffs
connections with the National Specialist
teams based at the Maudsley Hospital. The
Department is also home to the National
Academy of Parenting Research.

Such is the complexity of the brains

construction that neurobiologists are still far
from a complete structural and functional

VOICE OF THE ACADEMIC

General Robert E. Lee remarked, it is well that
war is so terrible, otherwise we should grow too fond
of it. His observation captured the trauma and the
emotional highs of battle, two key elements of our
research in the field of military psychology. How
people prepare for conflict, cope during periods of
intense stress and manage the return to peacetime
life frame much of our study of soldiers and civilians.
Incorporating findings into the core teaching
material for the MSc in War and Psychiatry has
significant value; it exposes our ideas to critical
scrutiny and also gives us an opportunity to influence
a new generation of scholars and practitioners.

After experiencing various educational reforms in
my teaching life, I wanted to reflect on my experiences
with the help of some theoretical frameworks.
Fascinated by the long history and well-known
reputation of Kings, I decided to study the MA
programme in Education, Policy & Society. The
programme is of very high quality and has given me
multiple perspectives and analytical lenses for
evaluating educational policy critically.

THE SPECIALIST
I became interested in poverty and inequality
after getting involved in politics during my
undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences. There
was no Labour Society at my university so I set one
up. I found that poverty was political, and after
graduating I wanted to focus on these issues in
more detail.
I got a few offers but chose Kings when one of the
co-directors of the new International Development
Institute told me about all the specialist staff they
were hiring. The academic standing of the people
here is second to none. I really enjoyed studying
here at Kings.
Since finishing the masters Ive interviewed some
former Prime Ministers and Secretaries of State for
a video aimed at keeping international development
at the top of the agenda. Im now about to start a PhD
here at Kings as I think this will help me become a
policy advisor on development issues.

VOICE OF THE STUDENT

In coming to Kings my plan was to broaden my
knowledge of marketing and communications, and
to apply it in practice. I have achieved that but what
came with it was the chance to live and study in a
truly international environment. Taking on
responsibilities at Kings and joining Students in
Free Enterprise (SIFE), the KCL Finance Society

people, developed my leadership skills and gained
the invaluable instinct to question every idea that

Social Science, Health & Medicine

Social Science,
Health & Medicine
Illness is a human experience,
shaped by social, political and
economic conditions, by cultural
beliefs and values, and by systems
of language and meaning.
From research to policy and practice,
inequalities in medicine and health are
increasingly global matters, with profound
effects on individual human lives and on
social and political relations worldwide.
Social Science, Health & Medicine is a unique
interdisciplinary department founded in
2012. By bringing together social scientists,
biomedical researchers and clinicians, Kings
explores the complex social determinants
of health, illness and ageing, and the ways
in which advances in biomedicine and
biotechnology are changing expectations
about life, health and the nature of medical
practice. Our internationally recognised
expertise is utilised by myriad organisations
and we will equip you with the skills required
for a wide range of careers in the health
services; in government and NGOs; and in
the commercial medical and health sectors.

University policy

University policy
University statement on
equality and diversity
Key principles
Kings College London recognises
that equality of opportunity and the
recognition and promotion of diversity
are integral to its academic and
economic strengths.
The following principles apply in respect
of the universitys commitment to
equality and diversity:
To provide and advance equality of
opportunity in all areas of its work and
activity
To recognise and develop the diversity
of skills and talent within its current
and potential community
To ensure that all university
members and prospective members
are treated solely on the basis of
their merits, abilities and potential
without receiving any unjustified
discrimination or unfavourable
treatment because of a protected
characteristic[1]
To provide and promote a positive
working, learning and social
environment which is free from
prejudice, discrimination and any form
of harassment, bullying or victimisation
To foster good relations between
individuals from different groups
and tackle prejudice and promote
understanding.
[1] A protected characteristic includes
age, disability, gender, gender
reassignment, marriage and civil
partnership, pregnancy and maternity,
race, religion or belief and sexual
orientation.
Management responsibility for equality
and diversity resides within the Equality
& Diversity Unit in the Directorate of
Student & Education Support. The
Disability Advisory Service provides
information, advice and guidance on
possible support initiatives to students
and staff of the university.
The university recognises that all of its
members have a duty to support and
commit to its equality and diversity
principles to ensure that these are
embedded within university policies,
procedures and practices.

Degree-awarding powers
In July 2006 the Privy Council granted
Kings College London degree-awarding
powers in its own right. The university
exercises these powers while remaining
a constituent College of the University
of London. Therefore all students who
start a course in 2016 will study for a
Kings College London degree. Your
degree certificate will record that your
degree is awarded by Kings and that the
College is a member of the University of
London. The enactment of this change
in awarding authority does not affect
the degree programme curricula, the
teachers or the methods of teaching,
the modes of assessment or the high
quality of the academic and associated
support provision.

Changes to courses
and changes to guide
information
The following message contains some
very important information. Please read
it before you use this guide.
This guide was printed in the summer
of 2015. It contains information on
the postgraduate courses that Kings
College London (Kings) intends to
run for students who are planning to
start university in the autumn of 2016.
Kings has made every effort to ensure
that the information provided is both
helpful and accurate as at the date of
publication. However, some changes,
for example to courses, facilities or fees
may become necessary due to legitimate
staffing, financial, regulatory and
academic reasons. Kings will endeavour
at all times to keep any changes to a
minimum and to keep students informed
appropriately.
For this reason, it is particularly
important that you should check
the website for updates
(www.kcl.ac.uk/prospectus) or
contact Kings using the contact details
contained within this document.

No liability to parents,
sponsors or other
third parties
Kings dealings and contracts with
students and prospective students do
not create a contract or other legally
binding relationship between Kings
and anyone else, for example parents,
guardians or sponsors.
