her research involves the
philosophical foundations of
spacetime theories, but also
makes contact with questions
in mainstream philosophy of

Europeanness on film
Kings alumnae Dr Alissa Timoshkina,
Dr Mariana Liz and Dr Mary Harrod
published the first book to explore
Europeanness in cinema. It aims to
identify the distinctive character of
European cinema, both in films and as
a critical concept, asking: what place
does European cinema have in an
increasingly globalised world? The
idea for the book came out of a
conference organised at Kings in 2010,
which was sponsored by the Kings
Roberts Fund, the Department of Film
Studies and the University Association
for European Studies.

The excellence and influence of our
research has led to change both
nationally and internationally and
underpins all of our teaching. Panel and
committee representation, research
reports and legal advice to world leaders
are just some of the ways we impact
public policy and practice.
Prominent London practitioners teach on our courses
and with Parliament, government departments, the Royal
Courts of Justice, the Inns of Court and the offices of major
global law firms all within walking distance, networking
opportunities are bountiful. Many of our alumni return to
us for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and
are actively engaged with activities and events at
our school.
We are the only law school in the UK to have two former
Chief Justices as distinguished visitors.

different ways climate change disrupts
adjudication and how lawyers might contain
and resolve this disruption. The workshop
is in collaboration with the UK Supreme
Court, the Journal of Environmental Law,
the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and

Groundbreaking research
to prevent peanut allergy
A study led by Professor Gideon Lack
and published in the New England
Journal of Medicine was the first to show
that consumption is an effective strategy
to prevent food allergy, contradicting
previous recommendations.
For many years, public health
guidelines, paediatricians and allergists
have recommended avoiding foods in
infants diet that cause allergies such as
peanuts. However, new evidence from
Professor Lacks LEAP (Learning Early
About Peanut Allergy) study shows that
the majority of infants at high risk of
developing peanut allergy are protected
from peanut allergy at age five years
if they eat peanuts frequently, starting
within the first 11 months of life.
With incidence of food allergy rising
dramatically in recent decades, this
research is more vital than ever.
Outstanding REF
2014 results
We are delighted with our results from
the last Research Excellence Framework
(REF, 2014). The faculty performed
strongly, with 91.8 per cent of research
4* (world-leading) or 3* (internationally
excellent), consolidating our position
at the forefront of life sciences and
medicine research.
Clinical Medicine was placed first in
the UK in terms of the proportion of our
overall submission that was ranked 4* or
3* and our subjects allied to Medicine:
Pharmacy, Nutritional Sciences and
Womens Health were ranked second in
the UK in terms of research power.

Disabled students
We welcome applications from disabled
students. Disclosing a long-term medical
or mental health condition, specific
learning difficulty or disability does not
affect the academic assessment of any
application. It is helpful to know about
the nature of any disability so we can
address specific needs and ascertain
whether facilities are available. Simply

THE ENTHUSIAST
I became interested in the history of war because I
am of a generation whose parents served in World
War II. My father, uncle and all my friends fathers
served in the war and they never talked about it.
It was this mysterious world that I was not allowed
to enter.
I developed a really strong interest in trying to find
out what they experienced. This led me to study
military history. I want to record what these people
did, the sacrifices they made and what they went
through so that its not forgotten.
I graduated from my last degree 40 years ago. The
first advice I would give to other mature learners is
dont be frightened. You can do this and coming back
is easier than youd think. Kings is so welcoming to
mature students and my professors were always
available when I needed advice and guidance. If
youve thought about returning for a degree do it,
its worth it!

Theology & Religious Studies
at Kings is a vibrant department
reflecting a wide range of
approaches to the study of
religion: anthropological, cultural,

philosophical, sociological, textual
and theological.
Kings has drawn outstanding scholars from
all over the globe to teach key aspects of the
worlds religions: their histories, social contexts,
art, philosophies, belief systems, practices and
the texts they hold sacred. There is a particular
focus on the three Abrahamic religions,

THE ACADEMIC
Ive been at Kings since 1995 I came here to study
and I never left!
Before coming to Kings, I qualified as a dentist and
worked in general practice and community dental
service for about four years. What got me interested
in the Conservative Dentistry MSc was the chance to
actually build a patients smile.
Im now Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Dental
Institute. Its lovely to be able to treat patients, teach
students and do the research that Im really interested
in at the same time.
One thing that Kings has taught me is the idea of
life-long learning. It doesnt stop. You can always
carry on learning in order to get to the point where
you really do enjoy what you are doing, at the same
time as being really good at it.

THE INTERNATIONAL
EXPERIENCE SEEKER
Im really enjoying my life in London. Everyone
is nice and willing to help me get used to my new
life here. I did my undergraduate degree in China,
but chose Kings for my postgraduate degree due to
its reputation for Pharmacy & Pharmacology and
Kings Health Partners.
China is entering a time of reformation, so I want
to get involved in the NHS to gain the knowledge to
help Chinas medical reform. I want to be a clinical
pharmacist in China and while studying my
masters have decided to take a PhD at Kings
to achieve this dream.
Working at Guys, St Thomas and Kings College
hospitals means I can gain clinical knowledge,
communicate with clinical experts and learn about
the NHS, which is one of the key reasons I chose to
study in the UK.

THE YOUNG
PROFESSIONAL
I had been working for several years before I came
to Kings, but postgraduate study has always been
one of my goals.
Im a software engineer for a company called
Haemonetics, and worked part time throughout
my full-time Computing & Security MSc course at
Kings. It wasnt easy, but I enjoyed being back in
academia and having the chance to do research.
Security is something that is always important
within any kind of information system. The
knowledge I gained during my MSc will always be
useful to me, both in my current job and in the future
when I may look for a role thats more involved in the
area of security.
At Haemonetics, I now work on software that
manages the distribution of blood within NHS
hospitals. We make sure that the right blood gets to
the right people at the right time for transfusions.

The Institute of Psychiatry,
Psychology & Neuroscience is
home to one of Europes largest
research groups focusing on the
development of prosocial and
antisocial behaviours across
the lifespan.
Our academics have expertise from
basic animal models through to the latest
neuroimaging techniques. We align this
expertise in biological approaches with
epidemiology and the social sciences. We are
world leaders in areas including brain imaging
of infants; autistic spectrum disorders and
ADHD; conduct disorder; callous unemotional
behaviour in children; antisocial personality
disorder in adulthood; maternal stress/abuse
and subsequent development of antisocial
behaviour in offspring. In order to translate
our findings into practice and to improve
patient outcomes, our work is integrated with
clinical services within the South London and

THE GRADUATE
When I finished my undergraduate degree I still
felt I needed more of an X-factor from a professional
perspective. Id gone from junior school to high school
to university so entering the job market seemed like a
frightening task. My postgraduate studies have given
me that foot in the door.
The IoPPN is such an active research institute so
youre right up to date with whats relevant in the
second decade of the 21st century. Its helped prepare
me for real working life and Ive actually secured a
job at one of the major strategic consultancies based
here in London. Im very much looking forward
to that.
Im originally from Copenhagen and studied my
undergraduate degree in California before coming to
London. As well as a multicultural outlook, I think
it gives you a sense of fulfilment to know that you can
live somewhere new without knowing anyone and
get on just fine.

THE SPECIALIST
I became interested in poverty and inequality
after getting involved in politics during my
undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences. There
was no Labour Society at my university so I set one
up. I found that poverty was political, and after
graduating I wanted to focus on these issues in
more detail.
I got a few offers but chose Kings when one of the
co-directors of the new International Development
Institute told me about all the specialist staff they
were hiring. The academic standing of the people
here is second to none. I really enjoyed studying
here at Kings.
Since finishing the masters Ive interviewed some
former Prime Ministers and Secretaries of State for
a video aimed at keeping international development
at the top of the agenda. Im now about to start a PhD
here at Kings as I think this will help me become a
policy advisor on development issues.

Political Economy
Social Science,
Health & Medicine
Illness is a human experience,
shaped by social, political and
economic conditions, by cultural
beliefs and values, and by systems
of language and meaning.
From research to policy and practice,
inequalities in medicine and health are
increasingly global matters, with profound
effects on individual human lives and on
social and political relations worldwide.
Social Science, Health & Medicine is a unique
interdisciplinary department founded in
2012. By bringing together social scientists,
biomedical researchers and clinicians, Kings
explores the complex social determinants
of health, illness and ageing, and the ways
in which advances in biomedicine and
biotechnology are changing expectations
about life, health and the nature of medical
practice. Our internationally recognised
expertise is utilised by myriad organisations
and we will equip you with the skills required
for a wide range of careers in the health
services; in government and NGOs; and in
the commercial medical and health sectors.

University policy
University statement on
equality and diversity
Key principles
Kings College London recognises
that equality of opportunity and the
recognition and promotion of diversity
are integral to its academic and
economic strengths.
The following principles apply in respect
of the universitys commitment to
equality and diversity:
To provide and advance equality of
opportunity in all areas of its work and
activity
To recognise and develop the diversity
of skills and talent within its current
and potential community
To ensure that all university
members and prospective members
are treated solely on the basis of
their merits, abilities and potential
without receiving any unjustified
discrimination or unfavourable
treatment because of a protected
characteristic[1]
To provide and promote a positive
working, learning and social
environment which is free from
prejudice, discrimination and any form
of harassment, bullying or victimisation
To foster good relations between
individuals from different groups
and tackle prejudice and promote
understanding.
[1] A protected characteristic includes
age, disability, gender, gender
reassignment, marriage and civil
partnership, pregnancy and maternity,

information, advice and guidance on
possible support initiatives to students
and staff of the university.
The university recognises that all of its
members have a duty to support and
commit to its equality and diversity
principles to ensure that these are
embedded within university policies,
procedures and practices.

In July 2006 the Privy Council granted
Kings College London degree-awarding
powers in its own right. The university
exercises these powers while remaining
a constituent College of the University
of London. Therefore all students who
start a course in 2016 will study for a
Kings College London degree. Your
degree certificate will record that your
degree is awarded by Kings and that the
College is a member of the University of
London. The enactment of this change
in awarding authority does not affect
the degree programme curricula, the
teachers or the methods of teaching,
the modes of assessment or the high
quality of the academic and associated
support provision.

Changes to courses

information
The following message contains some
very important information. Please read
it before you use this guide.
This guide was printed in the summer
of 2015. It contains information on
the postgraduate courses that Kings
College London (Kings) intends to
run for students who are planning to
start university in the autumn of 2016.
Kings has made every effort to ensure
that the information provided is both
helpful and accurate as at the date of
publication. However, some changes,
for example to courses, facilities or fees
may become necessary due to legitimate
staffing, financial, regulatory and
academic reasons. Kings will endeavour
at all times to keep any changes to a
minimum and to keep students informed
appropriately.
For this reason, it is particularly
important that you should check
the website for updates
(www.kcl.ac.uk/prospectus) or
contact Kings using the contact details
contained within this document.
No liability to parents,
sponsors or other
third parties
Kings dealings and contracts with
students and prospective students do
not create a contract or other legally
binding relationship between Kings
and anyone else, for example parents,
guardians or sponsors.
