Meeting

Minutes 4/18/2016
Start time: 3:20
Maximum end time: 4:00

1. Formal review of rubrics and overall goals of the project
Leslie needs to create our progress report by May 1 (due May 3)
Two documents in PB Works:
i. Requirements:
a) one misconceptions in science/math;
b) a STEM connection (data collection/analysis, experimentation,
design);
c) one Spark of Genius;
d) differentiation (varied levels of interaction);
e) assessment of learning
ii. Budget: $1500
iii. Contract has been accepted; any necessary revisions will be made
before summer semester
2. The Meaning of Old World Technology vs New World Technology
Old World: like Foxfire; water wheel; agriculture; mushroom
(bioluminescent); looking at the science of Foxfire
New World: depends on where we start; maybe looking at water power
Idea: Appalachia; water power to turn mills now how we use water power;
its more industrial now; looking at environmental effects; Looking through a
historical lens; Barrier: misconceptions; how can we find a misconception?
Tyler has some ideas about general societal misconceptions; NIMBY?;
diverting water sources from natural path?; weve been dealing with
misconceptions in silos (math misconceptions; physics misconceptions);
Yusef: misconceptionshow the electricity is actually being used; run
computers, robots, everything; Tyler: generation of power; We will need to
have a lesson to dispel the misconception
Think about the technologies from Foxfire; think about how they have
developed over time, or how they are applied today
3. Discuss ideas for research & deadlines for research sharing
Define the problem and research go hand-in-hand
As youre going through and trying to develop ideas, have STEM Interactive
Display rubric: content standards, misconceptions, interdisciplinary, inquirybased, exploratory, interactive; Spark of Genius
Think in terms of feasibility of construction/materials, space; keep logistics
in mind as youre doing your research

Perhaps we can start from the lens of misconceptions that most people in
society have;
We need to have a solid idea by April 24 on Slack, and then all of the
background research by (all of Step 2) May 1
If you have an idea before April 26, put it on Slack and then we can discuss
next week. Each person should put up at least ONE idea by Sunday night,
where you have fleshed out Step 1 (including (a) brainstorm idea/issue with
a common misconception; (b) consider math/science connections; (c)
determine desired outcomes)
These ideas will be discussed and put to a vote on April 26
4. Deadlines
April 24put at least one idea of Slack
April 26at least 4 ideas on Slack to discuss and vote on
May 1background research due
