There seems be an overview stating that people act in a negative manner on social
media due to the online disinhibition effect. In this instance, people are more hostile,
impolite, and straightforward because they are anonymous; thus they are can be as
unkind as they wish without any outcome.
Todays world involves the extensive usage of technology where the general public
depends on electronic devices and computers increasingly. Online communication
frameworks are the increase with fleeting usage rate and growth. Social media is the
predominant medium in online communication. According to an article on Reuters,
sixty-two percent of people who are connected online communicate through social
media websites. These social media platforms have become suitable for Internet users
who can connect virtually anywhere through their smart phones, laptops, or home
computers. A certain phenomenon that has been related to be a feature of social media
users is the online disinhibition effect.
According to John Suler, online disinhibition effect is a loosening (or complete
abandonment) of social restrictions and inhibitions that would otherwise be present in
normal face-to-face interaction during interactions with others on the Internet. The six
main factors of this effect include dissociative anonymity, invisibility, asynchronicity,
solipsistic introjection, dissociative imagination, and minimization of authority.

The aim of this research is not only to explore the outcomes that derive from the
online disinhibition effect. A series of online articles such as on Wired and New York
Times have blamed the toxic online behaviors and incapability to communicate

properly in real life because of online disinhibition effect. This situation is becoming
bigger in the todays world and it is this research papers duty to determine if this is a
valid claim, identify the effects on young adults, and examine the relationship
between real life and social media communication in regards to online disinhition.
The target populations for this research are Taylors University Students between the
age of 18 to 25 who are on social media. The sample frame is made up of the 11
different schools in Taylors University. Taylors University Lakeside Campus was
chosen for this research because it has the best suited demographics for the study with
a range of students that can be sampled.
This research was chosen to be conducted due to the rapid growth of social media.
While many social networking sites have come and gone, its apparent that social
networking is no temporary trend. In connection to social media, online dishinition
effect has been of great interest and importance. This is because changes in behavior
towards communication on social media and in real life shape our perception of the
world vastly and it is this research papers liability to explore these effects.
