Adequate ventilation.
Equipment lockout and tagout (electric, pneumatic, hydraulic).
The gas cylinders have been secured.
Ladder/scaffold properly set.
Welding cable and other equipment should be placed so that it presents no obstruction to
passageways, ladders, and stairways.
Welding machines should be properly grounded and be installed with earth leakage circuit
breaker. The ground lead should be placed as close to the work as possible.
Cables with splices within 3 m of the electrode holders should not be used.
Welding cables with damaged insulation or exposed bare conductors should be replaced.
When in use, electrode holders should be placed so that they cannot make electrical contact
with persons, conducting objects, fuel tanks, or compressed gas tanks. The welder shall not
coil or loop welding cable around parts of his body.
Cutting torches should be equipped with an anti-reverse flow check valve.
When gas welding equipment is not in use, the cylinder valves should be closed and the
pressure in the hoses released.
Acetylene cylinder valves should not be opened for more than one and one-half turns. The
wrench must be left on the stem.
All gauges and regulators should be maintained in good condition. Regulator gauges should
not be used if the glass cover is broken or cracked.
Hoses showing leaks, burns, worn places, or other defects rendering them unfit for service
should be repaired or replaced. Soapy water can be used to detect leaking points.
Welding helmets should be worn by all welders during welding operations. Personnel should
not be permitted to observe arc welding operations unless they are wearing proper eye
protection.
When welding under wet conditions, special insulating protection should be provided in order
to prevent an electrical shock.
After welding operations are completed, the hot metal should be marked or provided with
some other means to warn people of the hazard.
After completion of the work, an observer should remain on site to ensure that there has
been no spread of sparks or heat before the facility is ready to return to normal activity.
