A closer look at Zika

Shawnee High School Class of 2016

As the first baby in the state is born

with serious Zika-related birth defects,
public health officials plan ahead

Some of the smallest insects
are now among the largest concerns of state public health officials after the first baby in New
Jersey has been born with serious birth defects linked to the
Zika virus.
Born Wednesday, June 1 at the
Hackensack University Medical
Center to a mother from Honduras, this Zika-born baby is also
the third born in the U.S. known
to have such serious Zika-related
birth defects. According to Dr.
Manny Alvarez, Fox News Channel's senior managing editor for
health news, the mother told doctors she was bitten by a mosquito
early in her pregnancy and developed a rash, but was not diagnosed in Honduras due to a lack
of nearby testing resources.
Although most cases of the
virus have been known to occur
in areas with active outbreaks
such as the Caribbean, Central
and South America and the Pacific Islands, New Jersey has documented 18 cases of the Zika virus
thus far. Prompting concern
among residents of the state, especially those who are pregnant,
this condition is now known to

cause microcephaly in babies

an abnormal smallness of the
head associated with incomplete
brain development.
Typically, symptoms of this
virus include fever, rash, joint
pain, conjunctivitis, muscle pain
and headache. Approximately
one in five people will develop
these symptoms within three to
12 days after infection and they
can last several days to a week, according to the Centers for Disease
Control.
Regardless of its origin in the
southern hemisphere, there are
several ways by which Zika may
have arrived in New Jersey. First,
those traveling to these southern
regions have been known to carry
the virus back to the United
States where sexual transmittance has been brought into question. Secondly, there also exists
the possibility that local mosquitos are becoming carriers of the
virus.

At age 14, Ryan Minshall is already well on his way to becoming an influential member of the
Medford community. The Eagle
Scout candidate, who is the senior patrol leader for Troop 26,
chose to dedicate five hours of his
time to making renovations to
Medford Park off Mill Street on
Saturday, June 11.
Fulfilling his Eagle Scout candidate project requirement, Minshall enlisted the help of approximately 25 members of his troop,
parents and friends and began
conducting the workday promptly at 8 a.m. With this assistance,
he was able to refurbish many elements of the park, but his concentration remained on securing the
mulch area so it would cease to

The 24th annual Kiki Konstantinos Scholarship Golf Tournament is scheduled for Tuesday,
July 19, at the Medford Lakes
Country Club in Medford Lakes.
Proceeds of the event fund
scholarships for outstanding
graduates of the Lenape Regional
High School District (Lenape,
Shawnee, Cherokee and Seneca).
The Konstantinos Scholarship
Foundation was established in
1993 to honor former Lenape Regional High School District Su-

perintendent K. Kiki Konstantinos who served in this position

for more than 30 years. Through
this yearly golf tournament, the
foundation raises money to continue Kikis work of fostering excellence in education by awarding individual scholarships to
outstanding students for higher
education.
Currently, 16 students per year
are awarded a $2,000 scholarship,
with a total of $425,000 being
awarded since the establishment

of the foundation.
Cost per player is $210, which
includes greens fee, cart, lunch,
prizes and an awards dinner. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. The
golf portion of the event begins at
1 p.m. with a shotgun start.

Summer Reading Program features new tracking system

Children of all ages are invited to have
fun exercising their minds and stretching
their imaginations by participating in the
Burlington County Librarys Systems 2016
Summer Reading Program featuring an
all-new online tracking system.
The eight-week program encourages
youngsters to do more than just read; it
urges kids to get outside and move, learn
about their communities and enjoy a wide
variety of special library events.
The Summer Reading Program is one
of the library systems most popular programs, said Ranjna Das, director of the
Burlington County Library System. Last
year, children across all our branches read
more than 11,000 books, and this year we
hope to see that number topped.
A new online tracking system will make
participating this year even more fun and
convenient. Children can create online accounts when visiting any branch or

through the BCLS website, which will

allow them to track their reading activity
and earn virtual badges for reaching milestones. Young readers will continue to have
the option of tracking their progress in
writing by picking up Summer Reading
Badge Books at their local branches and
collecting sticker badges, too.
For every 10 books a child age 5 and
younger reads, and every four hours a
child age 6 and older reads, one badge and
prize is earned. There is no limit; more
reading means more prizes, which may include books, coupons, toys and more.
Additionally, those who create online accounts will have exclusive access to unique
features such as the new Activity Tracks,
interactive step-by-step guides customized
for each age group and designed to encourage learning, curiosity and fun. Children
can explore a local park theyve never visited, browse the librarys collection of audio-

books to get ready for a road trip, check out

a library museum pass and visit a museum, virtually explore El Capitan in
Yosemite National Park with Google Maps
and more. Kids who complete Activity
Tracks are eligible to earn extra prizes. Additional online features include book lists,
wish lists, app lists, learning tips and weekly emails with book recommendations that
link to the BCLS catalog for easy access.
And all young readers will have plenty of
reasons to visit their libraries because
BCLS will once again present a wide selection of fun and educational programs at all
branches, all summer long. Special systemwide events will include interactive magic
shows, exciting science experiments and
live animal presentations.

Valedictorian looks back

at Shawnee career
Eric Biehn will head to Duke University this fall

While math and science are
two of the more challenging subjects for some students, Shawnee
High School valedictorian Eric
Biehn has always excelled in
them. Planning to major in math
and physics, he will be attending
Duke University located in
Durham, N.C., in the fall.
I chose Duke because it has
strong math and science programs and is situated in beautiful
North Carolina, Biehn said.
His favorite subject, Biehn
notes he has enjoyed every math
class hes ever taken at Shawnee.
Although these classes brought
him academic fulfillment, what
really made his high school experience memorable was being

the end of his
sophomore
year. He was
able to maintain this position through
the end of his
senior year.

many activities as they can. It
will allow them to meet friends
and have a memorable high
school experience, Biehn said.

Wildcats capture championship

Wildcats defeated the Carlyn Phucas Orthodontics team to capture
the league championship on Friday, June 10. The championship
game was held at Hartford Crossing in Medford and saw the lead
change hands five times with the
Wildcats prevailing, 8-7.
This was one of the most ex-

citing games that Ive ever

coached, said Head Coach Mike
Stoughton. The teams were
evenly matched and it really
showed the way the game went
back and forth. Everyone could
feel that it would end up as a nailbiter in the end. This season was
a total team effort with contributions coming from every single
one of our players this year.

Class of 2016 graduates from St. Mary of the Lakes School

The graduation ceremony for
the 47 members of the St. Mary of
the Lakes School, Class of 2016
was held on Tuesday June 14. Father Dan celebrated the mass
along with Monsignor Dubell.
At this ceremony, scholarships
awarded to the Class of 2016 to-

taled $42,750. Students receiving

these awards will be attending
the following high schools:
Bishop Eustace Preparatory
School, St. Joseph Preparatory
School, Holy Cross Academy,
Camden Catholic High School,
Shawnee High School, Seneca
High School, Lenape High School
and St. Augustine Preparatory
School.
In a tie, Donya Kowalski and
Giavonna Gaw had the highest
GPAs grades five through eight.
Aside from solely academic
awards, Rachel Orr and Addison
Malady won the Leadership
Award, Hayden Peterson won the
Principles and Values of SML
Award and Mia Fornito won the I
Care Award and the School Spirit
Award.
Receiving $1,750 financial
scholarships, Kathryn Bjorklund
and Zachary Morrison both won
the Sister Justina Award and
Scholarship. Next, Addison Malady won the Bernice Pascarello
Award and Scholarship of $2,000

winners of the night as they were
awarded the Finsen Family Foun-

dation Scholarship of $3,000 for

Alma Mater Award presenting
her with her books for freshman
year from Camden Catholic, and
an additional $750 per year for a
performing arts dance scholarship. Then, headed to Seneca,

Church, and because they were
already working on this project
across the street from my middle
school, Medford Memorial, the
township thought it would be a
great idea for me to help out
there.
To enclose the mulch within
the confinements of the park,
Minshall and his team laid out
2x10 and 2x12 pieces of cedar
around the park to form a retaining wall system sitting eight inches above the ground. He was extremely grateful for the townships decision to cover all related
costs for this project, as well as
Medford Cedar giving them a
great price on wood and for Murphys Grocery having donated
lunch.
I thought it was cool to be in
contact with all these different
people and to learn what it is like
to run a project and be in charge
of other people, Minshall said. I
got to see what its like to actually
put something like this together
and to make sure it ran smoothly.
Although this was the first experience the Eagle Scout candidate had organizing a project of
his own, Minshall has gained experience from assisting with six
other projects organized by his
troop peers. He has helped put a
new patio onto the property of
the Compassionate Friends Therapeutic Horseback Riding Center

and has aided in the installation

of a canoe rack at the Park View
Cemetery at Historic Medford Village.
We have a number of Eagle
Scouts and candidates throughout the town who have done great
work. It says a lot about the volunteerism we try to foster and sets a
great example for other members
of the community, Mayor Jeff
Beenstock said.
Aside from dedicating his time
to assisting with community projects, Minshall has also traveled
up and down the East Coast on
various trips with his troop. He
has recently gone on a four-day
camping trip to Washington, D.C.,
explored Rhode Island and plans
to head West to ranch in New
Mexico with his troop later this
summer.
Above all, what Minshall loves
about being involved in Scouts is
being able to obtain the knowledge necessary to help in a variety of different situations, and
also to be able to help people in
any way possible.
Over the next few months, the
candidate will continue working
toward obtaining the rank of
Eagle Scout. To do so, he will need
to fill out much paperwork and
obtain two merit badges the
communications and personal fitness badges. He plans to fulfill
these merits and earn his badges
by September.

However, while the media is
portraying Zika as a massive public health crisis, there is still
much that is not known about the
virus. For example, according to
the CDC, scientists are unsure if
infected men can pass the virus
onto their sexual partners, if infected women can pass Zika on to
men and if Zika can be transmitted through kissing.
I dont think theres any reason at this time to be more concerned in Medford than in any
other city in New Jersey, Mayor
Jeff Beenstock said. The county
is responsible for mosquito control within all municipalities, so
well certainly take our lead from
the county.
The mayor further commented

that if any action needs to be

taken over the next several
months, the council would certainly keep the community informed. As for the county, it
continues to oversee the issue
closely.
Constantly throughout the
year, were monitoring mosquito
populations through different
traps and treatments throughout
the county, Burlington County
public information officer Eric
Arpert said. We have a good handle on the situation, but no
amount of resources can match
cooperation from the residents,
which is paramount even in their
own backyards.
Arpert also stressed that education is really the key, and although the county organizes door
drops, door hangers and social
media posts to relay information
to residents, they are highly encouraged to partake in research
of their own as well. Aside from
heightening awareness, the county also stays vigilant and pre-

pared by responding to areas of

concern including trenches along
the side of the road and areas of
frequent mosquito breeding.
Were confident that this year
our efforts will protect our residents, Arpert said.
Despite the countys best efforts to control the spread of
Zika, no vaccine exists to prevent
the condition and therefore a
number of precautions should be
taken to better ensure it is not
contracted. Included in these
measures are emptying all standing water out of yards, making
sure window screens have no
large holes and using Environmental Protection Agency-registered insect repellents.
Other tips include wearing
long-sleeved shirts and long pants
and if outside for long periods of
time and unable to be protected
from mosquito bites, consider
sleeping under a mosquito bed
