FACT SHEET
Why: Cisco VLAN standards not compatible with other switch VLAN standards
To configure a Cisco Switch to not make use of the eduCONNECT VLAN’s and have it in situ as
a standard (dumb) switch it is advised that the first port of the switch is connected back to the
3Com switch. Firstly connect to the Cisco switch using a console cable and a terminal package
such as Hyperconnect/TeraTerm.
Instructions
Switch>En
“Enter enable password here “
You will have a # prompt instead of the > prompt
3. Type in the following commands which ensures that the switch will not automatically
configure VLAN information onto other Cisco devices on the network (some Cisco IOS
versions do not have these command if so ignore)
vlan database
vtp transparent
exit

4. The following lines places the first port f0/1 to ignore information up to or down to other
switches on the network in regards to VLan configuration
5. The following line ensures that management of the switch is still capable via telnet
sessions
interface vlan1
description Management Vlan Interface
ip address 10.xxx.yyy.zzz 255.255.yyy.zzz ( Use an IP address in the
curriculum VLAN )
exit
write memory
6. Once the Cisco switch has been reconfigured then configure the port on the 3Com
4400/3300 switch the same as a standard port on the first switch on the network to
connect to either an Admin or Curriculum workstation. ( ie Untagged Port ) If the switch is
not configured then leave as is and the Cisco switch should then work in the same Vlan
as that switch.
