(Seaman, Flinders et al. 2014) studied how atoms from dead plants are
incorporated into new life by plants. They hydroponically grew radish plants
using a nutrient system containing 15N KNO3 as the sole nitrogen source. Radish
plants were cropped and left to ferment in water to create a radish tea. The
latter was then used as the nitrogen source to hydroponically grow a second
batch of radish plants. Cryosections were obtained from harvested radish plants
and analysed using MALDI-MSI and SIMS-MSI. Glutamate, glutamine and arginine
were primarily investigated; however, a clear identification of these amino acids
turned out difficult due to complex overlapping isotope peaks of the positive-ion
mass spectrum. They were able to identify that choline and phosphocholine had
incorporated the labelled 15N, and that they were localized predominately in the
center of the radish bulb.. Approximately 50% of the material from the first
generation radish was transferred and assimilated by the second generation
radish.
