American English 9
Even though American English was inherited from British
colonization, it includes many words from other
languages. Those [thoz] languages include Spanish,
French, Dutch, German, Norwegian, Swedish, Scots,
Welsh, Irish, Scottish Gaelic, Finnish, Russian, and
Native American languages. When America borrows new
[nyoo] words from other languages, many of them are
changed phonetically. This means that the pronunciation
of the words change, but the spelling stays [staz] the
same. Because of this, the phonetic spelling is
different from the actual [akchooal] alphabetic sounds
of the words.
