PLAN OF WORK
STANDARD I ARTICULATION, IMPLEMENTATION,
OF A VISION

AND

STEWARDSHIP

Goal: I can promote continual and sustainable school improvement

Background: I attended a few SIP meetings last year to see how the process of
school improvement worked. I felt as though the meetings had relevance in
helping teachers work toward the building goal, but werent always equally
practical for all departments.
Activity: Participate in SIP committee to prepare for our external review. I will be
gathering evidence to prove that our building is meeting standard 4 (The
school has resources and provides services that support its purpose and
direction to ensure success for all students). I plan to observe as much of the
external review process as possible to learn what is expected by the
AdvancED review team.
Timeline: Participate in monthly meetings throughout the rest of the year.
Support Needed: None.

STANDARD II SUSTAINING
PROGRAM

SCHOOL CULTURE

AND INSTRUCTIONAL

Goal 1: I can monitor and evaluate teacher instruction through a variety of teacher
evaluation processes, including the Danielson model.
Background: Due to turmoil within the district surrounding teacher evaluations, I
was not able to participate in any teacher observations last year.
Activity: This year, I would like to work with Amanda (or potentially an administrator
in another building) to observe a teacher evaluation. I also would like to
discuss evaluation techniques with Amanda to see how she makes decisions
regarding teacher effectiveness.
In the event that I am unable to observe a formal teacher evaluation with
Amanda, I will sit in on a lesson of one of my colleagues and observe the
format of the lesson through the lens of the Danielson model. I will practice
giving constructive feedback to this teacher after the lesson.
Timeline: My goal is to observe one or two teacher evaluations this year with either
my mentor, Amanda McKay, or another administrator in the district.

Craig Rizzi
Support Needed: Discussion time with Amanda to learn about how the Stages
evaluation software works. EL 530 will help me to understand the intricacies
of various teacher evaluation models, helping me to better evaluate the
effectiveness of the Danielson model.
Goal 2: I will continue to serve as a mentor for new educators and participate in
teacher growth efforts.
Background: Last year, I allowed some pre-service student teachers to observe and
participate in my classroom. I was able to discuss the education field,
classroom management techniques, and lesson structure with them.
Activity: This year, I plan to continue to allow pre-service student teachers to
observe and participate in lessons in my classroom. I will engage in
discussion with them and provide feedback as necessary.
Additionally, I am serving as the algebra 1 teacher leader for my building,
which means I will be working with the algebra 1 teacher leaders from the
other two buildings in the district to design meaningful professional learning
opportunities for the math teachers in our district. We have already planned
our first session on designing engaging problem-based learning lessons.
Timeline: Monthly observations throughout the next year and periodic teacher
leader meetings after school.
Support Needed: Connections with local universities and colleges to allow preservice student teachers to observe in my classroom.

STANDARD III MANAGEMENT

RESOURCES

OF

ORGANIZATION, OPERATIONS,

AND

Goal 1: I can efficiently use human, fiscal, and technological resources to manage
school operations.
Background: This past summer, I assisted in creating the master class schedule with
John Kelley, assistant principal at Adams High School. I learned quite a bit
about the logistics of the schedule and organizing classes to best serve
students and teachers.
Activity: This spring I would like to work with our new assistant principal, Chuck May,
to see his process of assigning class schedules and rooms to teachers. I
would like to be able to see the process from the beginning, including course

Craig Rizzi
registration with students to determine how many sections of each course will
be offered.
Timeline: This work will begin in February or March when the scheduling cards are
collected.
Goal 2: Observe and participate in the process of hiring practices of qualified
educators to develop a positive and sustainable school culture.
Background: Due to teacher lay-offs at the end of the year, there were no
opportunities for me to participate in a teacher interview this past summer.
Activity: I will talk with my principals to learn about their philosophy for interviewing
teachers. I want to know exactly what they look for in a prospective
candidate and what questions they ask to determine if the teacher will be a
positive addition to the school culture. In addition, I will participate in math
and science teacher interviews for the building over the summer.
As I may not be able to participate in the hiring of a new teacher before the
end of the school year, I will speak with administration about the possibility of
sitting in on any support staff interviews. Alternatively, I will obtain a list of
possible interview questions from them and practice by interviewing a
student teacher in our building at the end of the year.
Timeline: I will participate in any relevant interviews over the summer, as well as
interviewing my principals at some point about the process.
Support Needed: Discussion of interview questions and techniques with the building
principals.

STANDARD IV COLLABORATING
TO DIVERSITY

WITH

COMMUNITY

AND

RESPONDING

Goal: Collaborate with faculty and community members by collecting and analyzing
information pertinent to the improvement of the schools educational
environment.
Background: Due to my busy schedule, I did not make much progress in my goals
from last year. Thus, I will attempt to complete the activities that I had
scheduled for last year.
Activity 1: Attend a few PTA meetings to observe and participate in discussion of the
school environment. This will allow me to see how any parent stakeholders
perceive the current climate of the school.

Craig Rizzi
Activity 2: I will explore the ways in which administrators use technology to
communicate with parents. Working with Amanda, I will observe how the
school collects data from parents and students as it relates to school
satisfaction. I will then help to aggregate and analyze this data as part of the
school improvement process.
Timeline: Monthly PTA meetings over the course of the current school year.
Support Needed: Discussion with Amanda about technology use for communication
with community.

STANDARD V ACTING
ETHICAL MANNER

WITH INTEGRITY,

FAIRNESS,

AND IN AN

Goal: Act with integrity and fairness to ensure a school system of accountability for
every students academic and social success.
Background: I was able to observe how Amanda handled a few discipline situations
last year and also talked with her about how she would handle various
situations as they arose.
Activity: Continue to observe and participate in various student discipline issues
over the next two years. Whenever a student discipline issue arises, Amanda
will allow me to observe how she handles the conflict. I will also run
hypothetical situations by Amanda to see how she would handle various
situations.
Timeline: This will occur whenever a student discipline issue arises.
Support Needed: Communication with Amanda to know when these events occur
and discussion about the school discipline code.

STANDARD VI ADVOCATING

FOR STUDENT LEARNING

Goal 1: Act to influence local, district, state, and national decisions affecting student
learning in a school environment.
Background: As a member of the district grading committee, I attended two school
board meetings last year. I was able to see discussions of the districts
monthly budget, along with how they carried out various orders of business,
including the districts strategic plan initiative.
Activity: I will continue to attend RCS school board meetings to learn the procedures
of the school board and to learn how they perceive the culture of the district.
This will help me to obtain a more broad perspective of the entire district.

Craig Rizzi
Timeline: I will attend two more monthly school board meetings this year.
Support Needed: None.
Goal 2: Collaborate with faculty members by collecting and analyzing information
pertinent to the improvement of the schools educational environment.
Background: Last year, I participated in the RCS district grading committee. Our
main goal was to design a system for weighting AP grades in the overall GPA
calculation. This process was meant to help students become more
competitive for collegiate scholarships.
Activity: This year, I will take on a more active role of piloting a standards-based
grading program in my algebra 1 classes and periodically report my
experiences to the grading committee. Our district is looking to move to a
standards-based grading mindset and I plan to play an active role in this
process.
Timeline: Monthly meetings over the course of the next year.
Support Needed: None.
