Ans. 1
Mathematical modeling of engineering problems :The study of physical phenomena involves two important steps.
FIRST STEP :
SECOND STEP:
The problem is solved using an appropriate approach, and the results are interpreted.
Physical problem
Identify important
variables
Make reasonable
assumptions and approximations
Apply relevant
physical laws
A differential equation
Apply applicable
solution technique
Apply boundary
and initial conditions
Ans.2
The various steps involved in problem solving technique are given below:
Step 2: Schematic
Draw a realistic sketch of the physical system involved, and list the relevant
information on the figure. The sketch does not have to be something elaborate, but it
should resemble the actual system and show the key features. Indicate any energy
and mass interactions with the surroundings. Listing the given information on the
sketch helps one to see the entire problem at once.nAlso, check for properties that
remain constant during a process (such as temperature during an isothermal process),
and indicate them on the sketch.
Step 5: Properties
Determine the unknown properties at known states necessary to solve the problem
from property relations or tables. List the properties separately, and indicate their
source, if applicable.
Step 6: Calculations
Substitute the known quantities into the simplified relations and perform the
calculations to determine the unknowns. Pay particular attention to the units and unit
cancellations, and remember that a dimensional quantity without a unit is
meaningless.
Ans. 3
i.EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH :
In this approach, experiments are carried out to verify or validate a hypothesis. This
approach provides insight into cause-and-effect by demonstrating what outcome
occurs when a particular factor is manipulated. This involves the use of controlled
observations and measurements to test hypotheses.
ADVANTAGES :
DISADVANTAGES :
ADVANTAGES :
It is inexpensive.
It is fast.
It reduces the number of choices or solutions to just a few by analysis.
DISADVANTAGES :
In this approach, the results obtained are subject to the accuracy of the
assumptions, approximations, and idealizations made in the analysis.
There may be variations between ideal and actual results.
iii.CFD APPROACH
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD), this approach is devoted to solution of the
equations of fluid flow through use of a computer (or, more recently, several
computers working in parallel). Modern engineers apply both experimental and CFD
analyses, and the two complement each other.
For example, engineers may obtain global properties, such as lift, drag, pressure drop,
or power, experimentally, but use CFD to obtain details about the flow field, such as
shear stresses, velocity and pressure profiles and flow streamlines.
ADVANTAGES :
DISADVANTAGES :
The results obtained using CFD approach may not be physically correct or the
results may even
be completely erroneous
Turbulent flows of practical engineering interest are impossible to solve without
invoking turbulence models.
