Sub:- Tour Report

I, the undersigned have visited Santaldih Thermal Power Plant on 01/04/2015 as a member of a team
constituted of seven Assistant Managers, in connection with information sharing with WBPDCL
officials. During the said visit I have met senior officers of the following section/ department.
1. Mr.Amarnath Pal ( DGM, O & M)
2. Mr. Pritam Saha ( Sr. Mgr. ,Boiler Maintenance)
3. Mr. Harisadan Biswas (Asstt. Mgr., Boiler Maintenance)
As an Assistant Manager of Boiler Maintenance Department of 8 th unit of D.P.P.S./D.P.L. I have
mainly discussed on different aspects of Boiler Maintenance of their units, therefore my tour report is
mainly based on that. During the course of discussion, it was gathered that both the 250 MW of STPS
are in running condition, one at full load of 250 MW (U #5) and other one at 85% - 90% of full load
of 250 MW (U #6).
Hierarchy of Boiler Maintenance department is following.
Senior Manager (HOD)
1 no Manager (At present vacant)
4 nos. Assistant manager (At present 3 nos)
6 nos technicians
Along with the above manpower they have maintenance contracts also for preventive & breakdown
maintenance as followings.

Regarding maintenance of the equipments of Boiler & Aux. they follow the preventive maintenance
scheduled based on the running hours of the equipments.

In discussion with them I have enlisted the following points which may be useful for us.
1. Instrument Air & Service Air compressor maintenance is under Boiler Maintenance
department & at present they maintain it departmentally as no maintenance contract is there,
but in case of refrigerant type dryer annual maintenance contract is available. Procurement of
spare parts for compressor is done from Kirloskar company as proprietary item basis.
2. Regarding Seal Air Fan Pressure it has been observed that at PA header pr. of 730 mmwc , SA
Fan discharge Pr. is approximately of 1400 mmwc at 4 nos of Mill is in running condition but
at our plant we are not getting adequate pressure. In discussion with them on that matter we
can thoroughly check the suction line of SA Fan for any obstruction inside the line to get
desired result.
3. Regarding discussion on temperature rise in APH # B guide bearing lube oil the phenomenon
is common in both the plant & can be avoided by keeping the oil chamber area clean.
4. They have replaced oil gun spray plate 90-J-16 by 90-J-11 at AB & CD elevation to minimise
the LDO consumption rate, but it has the disadvantage of frequent chocking of spray plate
especially during cold light up.
5. Cold Air Gates & Hot Air Gates for Mills are of flap type instead of guillotine type.
6. MAXIMO The Enterprise resource planning software is a huge advantage for their system
in all aspect of maintenance, inventory control, maintenance planning etc. which makes the
maintenance process very transparent and systematic.
With the help of MAXIMO they can get the value of running hours of all the equipments at
real time.
Along with the above points some more points have been discussed at length like how they have done
some modifications inside the Mill to reduce the coal dust leakage through seals, how they maintain
their preventive maintenance schedule for all the equipments with the help of maintenance planning
department etc. and all these have already been discussed with Boiler Maintenance senior officials of
D.P.P.S./ D.P.L.
There was complete exchange of views / ideas, which was a positive gain from both the sides, as I
feel.
Finally they have shown good hospitality, which is also to be appreciated.
