settings.Thepersoninthispositionisresponsibleforcreatingaflexibleprogramand
learningenvironmentthatprovidesspecializedinstructionforstudentswithdisabilities,
suchthatthestudentsbenefitfromthegeneraleducationcurriculumtothegreatest
extentpossiblewhensupportedwithsupplementalaides,accommodations,andother
needed
Bilingual&ESLInstructors:
BilingualTeachershelpstudentsaccessthecurriculumin
theirhomelanguagewhiletransitioningstudentsaccordingtoaplanfromalower
percentageofinstructioninEnglishtoahigherpercentageofinstructioninEnglish.ESL
InstructorsteachEnglishtostudentswhocomefromhomeswhereotherlanguagesare
spoken.Thisinstructionmayhappeninselfcontainedclassroomsorthroughpulloutor
pushinmodels.
CurriculumCoordinators:
Curriculumcoordinatorsoverseeelementaryandsecondary
schoolcurriculumandteachingstandards.Theydevelopinstructionalmaterial,
coordinateitsimplementationwithteachersandprincipals,andassessitseffectiveness.
Paraprofessionals:
Paraprofessionals:Assistintheeducationalandsocial
developmentofstudentsunderthedirectionandguidanceofthefacilitatorand
classroomteachers.TheyassistintheimplementationofIndividualEducationPlansfor
thestudentsandmonitortheirprogress.Theyprovidesupportforindividualstudents
insideandoutsidetheclassroomtoenablethemtofullyparticipateinactivities.

Administration

Principal
:Theschoolprincipal,aschiefeducationofficeroftheirschool,facilitatesand
managespoliciesensuringtheimplementationoftheCIWP(schoolimprovementplan).
Amongtheirresponsibilities,theprincipalevaluatesteachersandkeypersonnel
responsibleforschoolperformanceresultsandoutcomes.Professionaldevelopment,
promotedandsupportedbytheprincipal,isanimportantelementofstudentsuccess
(Morrow&Gambrell,2011).Theprincipalensuresthatteachersparticipatein
professionaldevelopmentthatpromotesandcorrelatesteacherproficiencywithstudent
improvementandsuccess.
Assistant

Principal(s)
:AssistantPrincipals(APs)assistandcomplementthe
principalsrolewithintheschoolandlocalcommunity.Inlargerschools,multipleAPs
sharetheresponsibilityofprovidingsupporttoteachers,parents,students,andstaffin
theirvariousadministrativeroles.
DeanofStudents
:Promotesandoverseestheobservanceofschoolanddistrictrules
andregulations,particularlythosedirectlyrelatedtostudentbehavior,asthesepromote
thegeneralwelfareandsuccessoftheschoolcommunity.
Clerks
:Clerksserveasabridgebetweentheprofessionalschoolcommunityandthe
localcommunitytheschoolserves.Clerkscommunicatevitalinformationbetween
administrators,faculty,staff,andparents.Additionally,becauseoftheirproximitytoand
familiaritywiththelocalcommunity,clerksfosteranimportantworkingrelationship
betweentheschoolandthelocalcommunity.Thismakestheroleoftheclerksan
essentialroleasfacilitatorsandconnectorsbetweenhomeandschool.
Engineers/CustodialStaff
:Schoolengineersandcustodiansmaintainschoolbuildings
inanoperationalstate.Theirworkensuresthatschoolsaresafe,clean,andcomfortable
workingandlearningenvironmentsforteachersandstudents,alike.
LSC
:Thelocalschoolcommunityiscomprisedofmembersofthelocalcommunity
(parents,businessowners,employees,etc.)withavestedinterestintheschools
successaswellasthatofitsstudents.LSCsaremorethanacounterbalancetothe
authorityoftheprincipaltomakedecisionsconcerningthemanagementoftheschool,
theyactasabridgebetweentheschoolsadministrationandthelocalcommunity.As
representativesofthelocalcommunity,LSCscanalsopartnerwithschool
administratorsandinstructorstosupportorchallengecity,district,andnetworkwide
initiativesthatdirectlyimpactlearningandstudentdevelopment.
Network
:ThelocalNetworkOfficesupportsitsschoolsinbymeetingtheindividualized
needsofeachschoolbasedonlogistical,community,demographic,andadministrative
data.NetworkOfficesareaccountableforutilizingthisdatatoinforminstructionalgoals,
professionaldevelopment,andoverallschoolimprovementtobestservetheneedsof
thecommunitiesandfamiliestheyserve.NetworkOfficesalsofacilitaterelations
betweenlocalbusinesses,communities,andschoolstoprovidestudentsandtheir
familieswithaccesstosupportservicesandlearningopportunities.
Superintendent
:Thesuperintendent,orChiefEducationalOfficer(CEO),authorizes
districtwidemandatesandinitiativesincludingthoserelatedtoattendance,curriculum,
schoolcalendar,andafterschoolprogramming,whileensuringthatthedistrictoperates
withinitsfiscalmeanssothatallstudentsareaffordedequalaccesstoeducation.

Community

CommunityOrganizations
(thatworkwithstudents):Therearemultipleorganizations
thatworkdirectlywithstudents.UpwardBoundisafederallyfundedorganizationthat
helpspreparestudentswithlimitedresourcesprepareforcollege.GainingEarly
AwarenessandReadinessforUndergraduatePrograms(GEARUP)isalsofundedby
theU.S.DepartmentofEducation.GEARUPcounselorssupportcohortsofstudents
fromseventhtotwelfthgradesastheyplanandprepareforcollegeandscholarships.

availableforstudentsafetyinemergencies.
EmployersandBusinesses
:Thebusinesscommunitydependsontheschoolsto
graduateliterateyoungadults.Thesegraduateswillgoontobeemployedbythe
Chicagobusinesses.Conversely,thebusinesscommunitysupportsschoolsindirectly
throughtaxesanddirectlythroughdonationsorhiringourstudentsandtheirfamilies.
Churches
:Localchurchesaresignificantsupportsinthecommunity.Theycandirectly
oftenthroughgrantmoneysupportstudentswithextracurricularactivitiesindirectly,
theyprovidenecessaryinfrastructuresuchasdaycare,foodpantries,andspiritual
guidanceforfamilies.
SchoolClinics
:SomeschoolshaveagenciesoncampussuchasAliviothat
providemedicalcaretostudentsandtheirfamilies.Manystudentscanreceiveservices
suchasvaccinationsorreproductivehealthcareoncampus.

Home

Parents/Guardians:
Parentsaretheprimarynurturersandrolemodelsofstudents,and
themostimportantteammembersinthelearningenvironment.Theirparticipationin
schoolsincludecollaborationandcommunicationwithteachers,monitoringtheirchilds
progress,andhelpingwithhomework.
Siblings:
Siblingslookoutforeachother,oftenhelpingeachotheroutwithnavigating
thelearningenvironmentandcompletinghomework.Somestudentsareresponsiblefor
helpingtocareforsiblingsbeforeorafterschool.
Friends:
Peershaveasignificantinfluenceonchildren.Itisimportantthatstudentshave
friendsduringandoutsideofschooltodeveloptheirsocialemotionallearning.Thisis
onereasonwhyschoolspromoteextracurricularactivities.Schoolsalsoneedtoensure
thatstudentsarenotbeingbullied.
ExtendedFamily:
Inmanycommunities,extendedfamilymembersroutinelyhelpto
raisechildren.Theyarewelcomeatschooleventslikeawardsceremoniesand
performances.Extendedfamilycanalsoprovidepositiverolemodelsandmentoring.
Mentors:
WhilethereareorganizationsthatprovidementoringsuchasBAMsome
studentshavementorsthroughtheirchurchoranoutsideorganizationlikeBigBrother.

SupportServices

Counselors
:Counselorsprovidedindividualizedsupportforstudentsintheareasof
academiccareers,collegeselections,professionalbehaviors,andmentalsupport.They
gatherandprovideinformationaboutdifferenttypesofcareersandhavepersonal
conversationswithstudents.Also,theyorganizecollegevisitsandmodelhowtobehave
intheseinstitutions.Thesepeoplecanofferasafespaceforstudentstodiscusstheir
personalconcernsandworries.
SocialWorkers
:Socialworkersorchestratheconnectionsbetweenfamily,child,
supportsystemsinthecommunity,andsupportsystemsatschool.Theymonitora
childsand/orfamilyslivingsituationandalignittotreatmentactionplans.Ifneedbe
theycaninvestigateandreportneglectcasesorabuse.Also,theycanprovide
counselingsessionswiththechildand/orfamily.
Therapists
:Thereareavarietyoftherapists,withtwobeingphysicalandoccupational.
Physicaltherapistsdiagnosepatientswithphysicalhandicaps.Theycanprovideand
implementtrainingsessionsandcanrefertootherspecialists.Occupationaltherapists
observeandmonitortheworkperformanceofclients.
Psychologists
:Thereareavarietyofpsychologists,schoolsprimarilyhavecounseling
psychologists.Counselingpsychologistsassessandprovidementaltherapytostudents.
Ifstudentsneedabuseoraddictionassistance,thecounselingpsychologistcanconnect
thestudenttoothermedicalprofessionals.
AfterSchoolActivityCoordinators
:Thesecoordinatorscanhavedifferent
responsibilitiesdependingontheschoolsanddistrictsneeds.Forinstance,
coordinatorscanhelpwithafterschooldetention,tutoringprograms,orotheracademic
supportsystems.Besidesacademics,coordinatorscanhelpwithsocialprograms(e.g.,
AfterSchoolMatters,B.A.M.,W.O.W.).
