Wherefore the speech of the soul is really angelic speech, and the mind cannot represent it to
itself except by a kind of mathematical doctrine of universals, of which we have spoken
above.

Dr Poynting deals
with this subject in his little work entitled The Pressure of
Light. He tells us that light can be shown by experiment
to exert pressure.
"It is just a hundred years," he says,
"since Thomas Young ... founded ... the theory that light consists of
waves, but there was no reason at that time to suppose that
the waves could press, and so experiments to detect lightpressure
ceased for nearly a century."
2
In 1873 Clerk
Maxwell enunciated his electro-magnetic Theory of Light, a
theory now universally accepted. His calculations on lightpressure
showed that strong sunlight falling perpendicularly
against a black surface exerts a pressure of about two- hundredthousandth
of a grain on a square inch. Now light is

The internal man can only be in very obscure communication with the external before recipient vessels
are formed in the latter by sciences and knowledges, 1900. How this communication is opened by
instruction, 5126, and how it is again closed by vastation, 7601. Communication between the internal
and external man is by influx, 5882, 5883; and by means of the interior man, 1702. And according to
the degree of conjunction, 6057; consequently of affection, 4186. The communication between the
affections and thoughts of men and the angels is effected by means of the Word, 9817. The various
form and beauty of the angels is according to the communication of affections between them, and the
several societies, 6604, 6605. When truths which are known appear undelightful, it is a sign that their
communication with good is intercepted by the fall of man into his proprium, 8349. How
communication is signified by a door, etc., 8989. The more an angel communicates to another from the

Was dieses

218 THE SOUL or -- E.SWEDENBORG. Chap. XVII. (348.)- (350.)
(348.) In the rational mind there is the face of the
soul just as in the body is the face and likeness of the
animus. The rational mind may thus be called the body
of the soul, because it is formed into an image of its
operations.
(349.) This mind indicates what the soul is. If the
soul be not spiritual and immortal by no means can such
a mind be formed in which the spiritual and natural are
conjoined. Wherefore since there are in the mind both
the natural and the spiritual, the mind possesses as in
a certain centre of confluences whatever the man pos
sesses ; wherefore the rational man is what is called
man. When this mind is destroyed the man perishes.
He then is a spirit, because the soul alone then lives.
(350.) This is the reason why man may be called in
ternal and external. That spiritual [essence] which flows
into the rational mind is the interior and superior man ;
but the natural which flows in from the animus is the ex
ternal man. The mind is what perceives in itself what it
is which the external and internal man advises. There
fore the external man is the same as an animal ; but the
internal man the same as an angel.
