The Horned Woman
A rich woman was carding wool late one night when she heard a knock at the door. It was the Witch of One Horn who entered and began carding wool violently. More witches followed, each with more horns and taking up spinning. Eventually twelve witches surrounded the fire, putting the mistress under a spell where she couldn't move or call for help. The witches demanded she make them a cake. When she went to the well to fetch water, a voice told her how to fix her sieve. Upon returning home and calling out as instructed, the witches fled in terror. The mistress was then told how to further protect her home from the witches if they returned.

wool, while all the family and servants were asleep. Suddenly there came a loud knock at the door and the voice called, Open!Open!
Who is there? said the woman of the house.
I am the Witch of one Horn, came the answer. The mistress opened the door and a woman with a horn growing on her forehead entered, holding a pair of wool carders. She sat down by the fire in silence, and began to card the wool with violent haste. Suddenly she said aloud, where are the the woman? They delay too long.
Then a second knock came at the door, and a
voice called, Open!Open!
The mistress felt herself obliged to rise and
open the door, and immediately a second witch entered, having two horns on her forehead, and in her hand a wheel for spinning wool.
Give me a place, she said. I am the witch of
two Horns, and she began to spin quickly.
And so the knocks went on, and the call was
heard, and the witces entered, until at last twelve woman sat around the fire, the first with one horn, the last with twelve horns. they carded the thread, and turned their spinning wheels, all singing an ancient rhyme, ( Qui vivra verra, Le voila,We are le preneur, the women with horns) Strange to hear and frightful to look upon were these twelve women .The mistress was frightened to death and tried to get up to call for help, but she could not move , nor utter a word or a cry, for the spell of the witches was upon her.
Then one of them called to her , Rise and
make us a cake.
Then the mistress searched for a jug to bring
water from the well that she might make the cake but she couldnt find one. And the Witches said to her, Take a sieve and bring water in it.
So she took the sieve and went to the well.
But the water poured through the holes, and she sat down by the well and wept. Then a voice from the well said, Take yellow clay and moss, and bind them together, and plaster the sieve so that it will hold. This she did, and the sieve held the water. Then the voice said again, Go back to the house, and just before you enter, cry aloud three times, The mountain and the sky over it is all on fire. And she did so.
When the witches inside heard the call, a great
and terrible cry broke from their lips. They
rushed forth with wild shrieks, and fled away
back home.
Then the Spirit of the well told the mistress
of the house to enter and prerare the encantments of the witches if they return again.First to break the spells, she sprinkled the water in which she had washed her childs feet. Secondly, she took the cake, which in her absence the witches had made a meal mixed with blood drawn from her sleeping family, and she broke it in bits. Then she placed a bit in the mouth of each sleeper, and they woke up,. Lastly she secured the door with a great crossbeam barred against it, so that the witches could enter.
The witches werent long in coming back, and
they raged and called for vengeance.
Open!Open!, feet water! they screamed.
I cannot, said the feet water. I am scattered on the ground, trickling away to the lake.
Open!Open!, wood and trees and beam! They
cried to the door. I cannot, said the door, for I am fixed and have no power to move.
Open!Open!, cake we have made and mingled
with blood! they cried again. I cannot, said the cake, for I am complete ly broken and bruised. Then the witches fled back home, uttering strange curses on the Spirit of the well. And the mistress and the house were left in peace..Thank you.
Dear friends,
The moral value of my story is
dont judge a book by just looking at its cover. Besides, we must also learn to know a person well before trusting them. Thank you.
