Victoria Shanghai Academy MYP Assessment and Reporting

What is the MYP? The Middle Years Programme (MYP) framework is part of the International Baccalaureate
continuum of student-centred learning and teaching, which is grounded in the learner profile.
How are students assessed? Through a variety of tasks,
students are assessed in four criteria in each discipline. Each
criterion is a description of a required standard outlining
what an exemplary piece of work should include. There is a
maximum score of 8 for each criterion and the scores
obtained for each criterion are combined to make a score out
of 32. Grade boundaries are applied so that each student
receives an overall grade for a subject, between 1 (low) and
7 (high). The grade boundaries for all subjects are seen in the
table below.

How do I read the VSA report card? Under the subject heading, the scores attained for each of the criteria are given
(out of 8). This is the level at which the student is currently working. Since each subject requires different skills and
knowledge, each subject group has different criteria. Students are encouraged to digest the criteria and to use them to
understand how they learn and how they can improve.
Approaches to Learning Skills: The Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills are designed to help students understand and
become proactive in the ways in which they learn. The aim of the ATL skills is to promote successful lifelong learners
who have acquired skills of effective thinking and learning. Given these skills, students will be equipped to face a
variety of challenges in their secondary education and beyond. Teachers report on an area of strength and an area for
improvement in each subject using the following framework:

Homeroom Teacher's Comment
Kobe has shown himself to be an exemplary student this year. Kobe demonstrates a mature
approach to his studies and is starting to exercise leadership. He is always friendly and polite,
and presents himself well. He can, at times, offer insightful thoughts in LPD. His extracurricular dedication to Maths, Basketball and Orchestra is to be commended. He is making a
valuable contribution to the school community. Next year he must commence the service
component of CAS. Well done for a great start to the MYP, Kobe!

Year 6 is an adaptation year for MYP CAS. As such, we acknowledge that students may not yet be
involved in a range of sustainable CAS opportunities. It is therefore perfectly acceptable for a Year 6
student to be "developing" in respect of all the Criteria on the CAS report above. CAS levels are
awarded in the order of: Developing, Advocating, Linking, Mastering

Science

Kobe continues to produce work at a distinguished level

in Mathematics. He is a conscientious individual who
sets goals and works diligently to attain them. In class he
is attentive and is able to grasp mathematical concepts
easily. He can then apply them with great accuracy and
perseveres through challenging tasks. However, he is
encouraged to learn to relate what he has learned to real
life contexts. Kobe should be congratulated on his
achievements and is encouraged to continue in this
positive, responsible manner towards his future
learning.

Physical and Health Education

Kobe has completed a good years's work in Science.

Kobe possesses good communication and processing
skills which he uses effectively to demonstrate his
knowledge and understanding of the work covered, but
should look to further develop his inquiry skills. Kobe is
a positive contributor in class to his group's assignment
and project work in class.

Self Management:
Organisation

Kobe has experienced a great deal of success this

academic year. It is clear that he enjoys English and has
worked hard. He showed good knowledge and
understanding during his poetry analysis and in class
discussions this term. His structure and organisation in
non-fiction writing is of a very high standard. During
our Fairytale unit, Kobe demonstrated an ability to
understand different character perspectives and to use
this knowledge to manipulate the audience. Overall,
Kobe has had a fantastic year and developed new skills.

Drama *

Kobe has had an excellent year in Music this year. His

composing skills are well developed and he has been
able to demonstrate the ability to use melodic
development techniques in a mature and sophisticated
manner. Kobe has demonstrated excellent understanding
of the musical elements required to compose an
effective seasons composition. When researching
Programme Music he has demonstrated an excellent
understanding of the musical vocabulary associated with
the unit.

Individuals and Societies

Kobe works well with other students in the class. He

obviously has good leadership skills and is comfortable
making directorial decisions about his melodramatic
performance. However, I would like Kobe to understand
the importance of organisation and doing the work set in
the allocated time. This way, Kobe won't have to come
to detentions to do the work that was set in lesson time.

Design

Kobe's performance in Individuals and Societies this

term has been pleasing though subject to some volatility.
In the SAP assessment, Kobe demonstrated
commendable knowledge of both the concept of
sustainability and mapping. However, this was less
evident for the segment testing understanding of
development indicators. Moreover, he managed to infuse
his discussion with a relatively high degree of critical
thinking. Finally, regarding the formative assessments,
he unfortunately did not achieve a comparatively similar
standard of attainment.

Kobe has shown enthusiasm and demonstrated

consistent effort in Design. Generally Kobe has had a
good year in Design, he has learnt a number of new
skills. Kobe can be relied upon to work sensibly and has
a good attitude towards his studies. As a target for next
year I would encourage Kobe to continue his current
level of effort, and build on his success.
