THE GERMAN HISTORY INDIVIDUALITY
Summary
One of the key problems with which the German historiography dealt with after the
World War II completion was the Third Reich issue along with the crimes committed
by the Nazi regime. Trying to rationally explain the historical conditions that enabled
the Nazi occurrence as a unique phenomenon of the German history, the historians accepted the concept of a special course of German history called Sonderweg, during the
70s of the 20 century. This idea had its roots back in the 19 century, however, the historians of the Bielefeld School headed by Hans-Ulrich Weller gave new subject matter
to it by supporting a viewpoint that the causes that enabled the above mentioned Nazi
phenomenon should be looked for within the time of the German Second Reich when
the German society development started to move towards somewhat different way in
comparison to other Western-European countries. According to the before mentioned
facts, the main difference between the Germany and other Western-European countries,
and the USA, represents the circumstance that the late national union and a rapid industrialization were not followed by the establishment of the democratic and parliamentary
forms of government. An authoritarian country with powerful remains of monarchy absolutism with a support on feudal aristocracy along with a powerful bureaucracy created
a special aspect of the non-liberal political culture that favored the rise of the rightist
ideas. The defeat in the World War I and the problems that it brought with itself could not
be solved during the brief existence of the Weimar Republic. So, during the time of the
Great economic crisis and a global crisis of the parliamentary democracies in the beginning of the 30s, Germany started towards the way that enabled the establishment of the
authoritarian dictatorship whose historical conditions were founded way back at the time
of the Bismarcks empire. The Sonderweg concept provoked numerous polemics within
the German historiography that with more or less intensity lasts until today.
