3rd Grade Heat Lesson Reflection

Lesson Reflection
Upon completion of the lesson that I conducted on heat for my 3rd
graders, I reflected back on what worked and some things that could have
been better that I can make adjustments on next time. First, the engage
segment of my 5E based lesson worked wonders to activate their
background knowledge and get them interested in the lesson. The short
video featured characters that made them laugh and engaged them in the
concept of heat. Next, there is one thing that I would change about the
lesson. I would make the explore segment of this lesson into investigation
stations instead of small group exploration at their seats. It makes more
sense now to do this because students work a little bit tired of the whole 5
minute then test aspect. If they could just rotate to each spoon station and
feel the spoons, it might make the activity more meaningful to my
kinesthetic learners. They tend to get a little antsy when they stay in one
place for long periods of time. If I made the spoon investigation a rotation, it
would provide just the right amount of time for students to feel the spoon,
record their observation, then jot down why they think it felt that way. Last, I
feel that this lesson was successful based on the student work that they
turned in and the discussion that the students and I had at the end.
Students were able to determine which spoons were good conductors and
which spoons were better insulators.
