Title:
Solving Systems of Equations by Substitution
Goal:
The goal of the lesson is to introduce the students to solving equations
algebraically by creating an iMovie explaining the process.
Objectives:
- We will work together to understand and apply our knowledge of
how to solve systems of equations by substitution by creating an
iMovie explaining the process.
- We will work together to apply knowledge of technology by creating
an iMovie explaining the process of solving systems of equations.
Description of activity:
The students will be split into 5 teams (4 people each) and will have to
choose out of a hat a system of equations to solve. Once all of the groups
have gotten their system they will need to solve that system first. After
showing the teacher answer (to make sure they are doing it correctly) each
group is going to create an iMovie on their iPad explaining how to solve the
same system. Finally, after they create their iMovie the students will then
present their video to the class.
Materials:
5 systems of equations split and put in a container for drawing
iPad
iMovie software
Whiteboard
Pencil
Paper
Body (modeling):
a.) Go over homework questions exhaust all questions.
b.) Introduce Systems of Equations and solve them by substitution.
c.)Ask these questions to foster discussion about substitution: Do we
want to graph every system we are given or do you think there is a
less time consuming way?, If we know that there are solutions to
systems of equations can we use algebra to figure them out?,
What does it mean to have a substitute teacher?
y=2 x3

Example 1 (as a class)

y=x1
-

Example 2 (as a class)

Example 3 (one their own, informal assessment)

v =t +4
2t + v=19

y=x4
4 x + y =26
(END OF DAY 1)
d.) Split into their groups going over a review of the last problem
they did in class the day before.
e.) Explain the instructions of what your expectations are about
behavior and show an example iMovie that you created to explain
how to solve systems of equations using substitution.
Closure:
Go around the team one by one explaining the hardest/easiest part of solving
systems by substitution.
Evaluation:
HW p. 384 22-24 all; 34-39 all
The students will be evaluated based on their scores of the homework and
quiz at the end of the week.
TIP:
Throughout this lesson the students will be able to showcase their
mathematical understanding of the concept through the use of technology.
Instead of using technology as a entertainment tool the students will be
using the technology as a teaching tool. The incorporation of the iPad and
the use of iMovie will help the students see technology in a different light
and will hopefully show them another tool to help each other when the
teacher is not present.
UDL suggestions:
The content will be direct instruction at first with the instructor walking
around to each individual student to make sure they are up to pace with
what is being taught in the class. This will be beneficial for the slower
students as well as the more advanced students and they can get one on
one instruction if needed. I will engage with the students on a more general
level during the direct instruction then on an individual level while working

through examples. During the group work they will also be able to engage
me through questioning and engage with each other through questioning
and practice. I will assess the outcomes based on the ability to correctly
explain the process and how to solve the system they were given. Also, if
there is a group with more advanced students I will have a special system
(word problem) that they will need to solve instead of the easier substitution
problems the rest of the class will receive or choose from. Likewise, if there
is a group of children who are struggling I will give them a simpler
substitution problem for them to explain. The goal is to be able to learn from
each other about substitution not for them get frustrated and cheat.
