Biography:
Landen, age 8 years 6 months, is a male 3nd grade student at
Emma B. Ward Elementary school in Lawrenceburg, KY. Landens
socioeconomic status started at low and has risen to middle class in
the past 3-4 years. Landen is from a stable family with a married
mother and father . He has one younger sister that is 2 years 6
months old. Landen also has many supporting family members
through uncles, aunts, cousins, and grandparents.

Physical:
Landen is 50 pounds and 53 inches tall. He appears to be on the
smaller side when compared to other children his age. He is very
active in gross motor play and is outside playing after school most
every day. He is involved in many extra-curricular activities including,
Tae Kwon Do, wrestling, and basketball. Landen has participated in
many sports teams and enjoys the physical challenges associated.
According to age development charts, The child is typically
expansive and may have more accidental injuries - broken bones, etc.
(1999) Landen is still very cautious when riding his bike. His friends
seem to be a bit more adventurous, but he enjoys riding slower and
taking his time. Despite encouragement from his friends and parents,
he is often worried about falling and getting hurt.
Landen has experienced more sicknesses than the normal child.
According to the development charts, Physical health is usually good
with fewer illness and reported aches and pains. (1999) He suffers
from seasonal allergies and had his tonsils removed over the summer.
After having his tonsils removed due to recurrent strep throat, the
sicknesses have decreased in number. Landen is sensitive to his
surroundings and illnesses passed by his classmates.
Also according to the age charts, Interest in sexuality continues,
but is typically covert. (1999). Landen seems to be interested in girls,

but is very embarrassed about the topic if brought up by a parent or

other adult. He is uncomfortable talking about anything dealing with
sexuality or the opposite sex.

Emotional:
According to Erik Erikson, a childs experiences in the primary
grades can contribute to his or her sense of industry and
accomplishment. (2015, p. 57) Landen is learning work habits
through chores around the house and tasks given at school. He is
proud of his hard work and is happy to receive praise from his parents,
teachers, and other adults.
The textbook states that During middle childhood, children
begin to evaluate themselves in comparison to others. (2015, p.58)
This concept is very evident when observing Landen. Landen is very
concerned with how he measures up to his friends and whether he is
able to accomplish the same tasks.
According to the age charts, the child frequently has great
beginnings and loses steam before completion. (1999) Landen gets
very motivated to start a new task and looks forward to the outcome,
but often needs encouragement to finish long projects. He may come
back to a task a few times before able to complete it.

Landen is more emotional when hurt or upset than other children

his age. He is very distraught and upset by very minor injuries when
compared to his peers. He often will sit out from play for a very long
period of time after a very minor injury. This seems to inhibit his play
and interaction at times. He seems fearful of getting hurt leading to a
reserved demeanor and holding back physically during play.

Philosophical:
Landen attends church on a regular basis and is held to high
moral standards by his parents. According to Kohlberg, at the
conventional level the individual adopts rules and will sometimes
subordinate own needs to those of the group. (2015, pg. 54) He is
very considerate of his friends and will put their needs over his own
wants. He likes to know that other people have what they need to be
happy and will give up something of his own if necessary.
Landen is concerned about those around him. During his
wrestling practice, he often holds back and has refused to live
wrestle for fear of hurting his opponent. Our text states that children
in the conventional level of morality have an unquestioning belief that
one should do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

(2015, pg. 54) This is a rule that Landen has been taught from an
early age and is the basis of many of his decisions
According to the age charts, at this stage there is typically, a
real understanding of goodness and badness, right and wrong. (1999)
Landen is very in tune to the good guy, bad guy notion. He writes and
draws stories about bad guys and what the good guy does to save the
victim. This makes him very interested in superheros.

Social:
Landen is very sociably. His teachers have commented that he
is always the first to befriend a new student and is not shy around
classmates. Landen is the type to be friends with everyone, regardless
of cultural or age differences.
Our textbook states the following: As children enter middle
childhood, friendships become more stable and reciprocal. (2015, pg.
59) Landen has several friends in his neighborhood that he plays with
daily. This year he has been allowed to walk to friends houses that are
on his same street. He is eager everyday after school to finish his
homework so he can play with his friends.

According to our text, Average children are those who are

named as being like and disliked with moderate frequency. (2015, pg.
59) This average category is the closest attempt at grouping Landen.
He is often named as a liked and friendly child, but also has a few
peers that do not like him because of this.
The age charts state that the relationship with at least one
parent tends to be strong with the child demanding to be personally
valued and understood and tends to express a need for closeness.
(1999) Landen has recently become more close with his father.
Landen has begun to like the same activities as his dad and they
frequently take hunting, fishing, and biking trips on the weekends.

Intellectual:
According to the age charts, children at Landens ageare often
fascinated with real world animals, stars, science in general. (1999)
Landen is very interested in learning facts about the world around him.
He is able to better grasp the concept of the expansiveness of the
planet and surrounding universe. He also has started applying lessons
learned in class to nature around him.

Seriation, according to our text, is defined as arranging things in

a logical progression. (2015, pg. 34) Landen has mastered this task
and is able to line many items up according to size. He will sort and
organize his toys based on size.
Landen does very well in most of his classes. He enjoys math,
science, and social studies. He masters new concepts quickly in these
subject areas. He shows a disinterest in reading. He gets bored very
easily when asked to sit and read to himself for more than 5-10
minutes. He struggles to complete his Accelerated Reading home
program.
According to our text children in the elementary grades also are
moving from egocentric thought to decentered or objective thought.
Decentered thought allows children to see that others can have
different perceptions than they do. Landen is very aware that others
opinions and beliefs may not be the same as his. He is very interested
is what others think about something and often ponders on the
difference of ideas. He seems to think critically about both ideas to
decide which idea he will continue to support.

Recommendations:
Landen would benefit from being keep active. He enjoys his
extracurricular activities and would benefit from continuing the
encouragement to participate from his parents.
Landen should be comforted after minor injuries and encouraged
to continue play. After self-confidence and his feeling of security is
built up, Landen may brush off minor bumps and bruises instead of
getting upset.
Landens philosophical level is beyond that of his peers.
Teaching of good moral values should be continued. Because of his
love for helping others, he would benefit from volunteer work that
gives him the opportunity to help.
Continued exposure to social opportunities will benefit Landen.
He would enjoy being put in situations where he will be able to make
new friends. Landen is excelling with the one-on-one time spent with
his father, and would also benefit from one-on-one time with his
mother.
Due to his dislike for reading, Landen should be given many
opportunities to read books he is interested in. He may show more
interest in reading if given the opportunity to explore his likes and
dislikes in regards to books and themes.
