You can do a pilot survey, of about 100 respondents and then run reliability analysis and factor analysis to identify the items with lowest reliability and/or higher cross-loading to select items that can be removed from final questionnaire. 2. If the scales are already used by other researcher and literature is available, you need to check the Cronbach alpha for each item and remove the items with lower Cronbach alpha. 3. Expert opinion mehtod: You may give the scales to 5 subject experts and request them to remove less important dimensions/items and the convergence between these five experts should be more than 80 pe cent. However, I will never recommend third option as it is highly subjective and not very scientific. I will always go with option 1 given time and budget so as to carry on the process more scientifically. mam
