Profile: Mr. Evan Faidley

Bonjour. Je mappelle Monsieur Faidley. Just like you, I am fascinated with international
cultures, especially Francophone cultures and the French language. I have a bachelors degree in
French Language and Culture and am currently working on my Master of Arts in French
Literature and Master of Higher Education and Student Personnel. I have been a French tutor to
children and adults of all ages, a French interpreter and translator for Goodyear, and an adviser to
Akron Public Schools career technical education programs. Along with French comes my
passion in business, finance and marketing, as well as professional development and
career/college preparation to high school and college students.
FUN FACT: Ive visited more countries than statesGo figure!
I became involved as an educator because I want to make a difference in helping people make a
difference. The world is your oyster, but you need to know more about whats going on, whats
out there beyond national borders, and what adventures your life can take in your personal and
professional journeys. You have the will and the way to shape your future and those around you.
Lets group and think and act for a positive, thriving future for all!
My teaching philosophy is to establish an international identity: knowing where you come from
and where you can explore on a global scale. Through interpretive, interactive, and
presentational exposure, people become one step closer to cultural understanding and linguistic
development.
Bienvenue! Commenons!
(Welcome! Lets begin!)

Required Materials for class:

You will need a folder for notes, vocabulary, and handouts in this class. You will also need to
bring notebook paper and a pen or pencil to class every day. It may be helpful to get a folder to
keep your paper and notebook in; it will help you be more organized for the class.

Course Description:
This course provides an introduction to the language and cultures of Francophone civilizations
all across the globe. The focus of this course will be on the basic fundamentals to French
conversation, learning world geography, and practicing French through worksheets and class
participation. Students will be able to identify basic French expressions and gain insight on an
international society. Exploring the French language and cultures that inhabit our
international society will be the underlying basis to our classes and how we can use what we
learn as 21st Century Learners.
Course Objectives:
Students who come prepared to class every day and who actively participate can expect to:
1) Learn about contemporary French and Francophone cultures
2) Communicate and interact with other speakers of French in diverse situations and in
conversations involving everyday topics
3) Formulate statements and questions for basic French dialogue
4) Read a broad range of printed materials for general, specific and practical information
5) Write notes, letters and compositions on familiar topics with a good command of
vocabulary and sentence structure in a cohesive and organized manner
Course Assessment ad Evaluation:
Prior to the commencement of the course, a pre-test will be distributed to measure how much
you already know about the material that will be covered, followed by a post-test that will be
given at the completion of the six-week period. There will also be quizzes throughout the class.
So you do not cram for these and lose any focus, I will be giving these unannounced as it shows
to be more effective than having to study everything the night before or the next morning.
Assignments:
Assignments are always due. When posted and/or mentioned in class, assignments will be due on
the designated date(s). Incorrect or blank work will be handed back for you to correct, then
reduce on a certain date as negotiated between you and myself. Late assignments will begin to
have 3 points deducted for each day late.

French // Faidley 4
Attendance/Tardy policy:
If you are absent, you are responsible in asking for the work that you missed and we will discuss
when the make-up will be due.
You must be in your seat at the beginning of the class; walking through the door while the class
is in session, its considered being tardy. If you are constantly tardy, this will impact your points.
Plagiarism:
When you are taking someone elses work or ideas and passing them off as your ownthat is
plagiarism. If you are citing or paraphrasing the text or ideas of someone elses efforts, please
note who mentioned it. Example: According to CIA World Factbook, there are 66,259,012
people who live in France. Mentioning the CIA World Factbook keeps you from stealing that
organizations information and making it your own.
Anything caught plagiarized will result in a one-on-one conference and consequence
considerations based on the situation.
Incentives:
If you would like a letter of recommendation, I would be more than happy to do so for you,
whether it be for a scholarship, job, college, etc. Just make sure that you have at least a B in
French and participate actively. If you have a rsum, even better!!!! Let me know by the end of
the program if you are in need of a letter.
