Welcome to Choir!

This course provides opportunities for students to


develop their musical potential and aesthetic understanding through singing in a
choral ensemble. Study includes the care and cultivation of a beautiful tone,
aesthetic awareness, the ability to read music, the building of technical skills,
team spirit, and responsible rehearsal habits. Students will have opportunities to
experience the spontaneity of improvisation and the creative process of
composition. Students will strengthen listening skills and their ability to analyze
and evaluate music and music performances. Attention will also be given to
relating their music experiences to personal development.
Course Objectives:
Students will:
Improve musicianship through rehearsal and performance of a wide
variety of choral music
Increase knowledge of music theory, history and vocabulary using a
variety of activities and assignments
Contribute to the learning environment by being respectful to others
in the classroom and following all rules and procedures
Materials needed daily:
Choral folder with assigned music. These will be given to you at the
beginning of the year and you will be responsible to have them with
you in every class. They will be turned back in at the end of the year.
Any severe damage or loss of music may result in fees for
replacement of these items.
A pencil for marking music. Pens, highlighters and permanent
markers are not acceptable.
Grading:
Your grade will be based on your performance in the following areas:
Daily Attendance and Participation 30% As an ensemble every single person is
important to the success of the group, therefore, there will be 10 points possible
each day which can be earned through attentive, positive contribution to
rehearsal. Students will lose points if they are late, unprepared or fail to meet our
classroom expectations.
In Class Assignments and quizzes 20% - There will be bi-weekly rehearsal
journals, a concert journal, a basic theory packet, listening assignments and
periodic memorization tests. These will each be explained as they are assigned.
Students who participate whole-heartedly in class every day will have no problem
passing these assignments.
**Late work is accepted up to one week after the due date but at a reduced value.

Missed work due to an absence will be accepted for full credit within four days
from the date of the absence. After that, it will be accepted up to one week at a
reduced value.
Term Project 20% - Each student will be required to complete one of the options
listed below for terms 1, 2, and 4. (In term 3, you will participate in the school
Solo & Ensemble festival to complete this project)
Option 1 Perform a solo or ensemble for the class. Repertoire for this
performance must
be appropriate, well-prepared and performed artistically.
Option 2 Attend a concert and fill out and turn in a Concert Report Handout.
Option 3 Take private voice or piano lessons for an eight-week period during the
term.
A form requiring the teachers signature will be turned in for credit.
Option 4- Accompany at least two pieces during the term. The student must
audition and
be selected to use this option.
Concert Attendance 30% - Concert attendance is a must! There will be one
concert per term. Please see my website under the tab Our Year at a Glance for
these dates. 200 points will be awarded for each scheduled performance. 20
points will be earned for being on time, 50 points for wearing the required concert
dress, 100 points for the actual participation in the concert, and the last 30 points
given for staying in the assigned area for the duration of the concert. Concert
points cannot be made up if they are missed. Please mark the dates on your
calendar and plan all other activities around them.
Grading Breakdown:
A = 94% B = 83% C = 73% D = 63%
A- = 90% B- = 80% C- = 70% D- = 60%
B+ = 87% C+ = 77% D+ = 67% F = below 59%
Citizenship
Model citizenship is expected from all choral students. The citizenship
policy as outlined in the Student Handbook will be strictly enforced.
Concert Dress:
Ladies will need a black skirt, knee-length or lower (no exceptions) and a
green, white or yellow shirt of your choosing but it must have sleeves and not
sheer. You must wear black nylons and black shoes.
Men will need a white long-sleeve shirt, black dress pants, black dress
shoes and a green or yellow tie of your choice.

Parents and Students - Please read and discuss the disclosure statement, then
sign and return this page by next Monday. This will count as one of your first
assignments. (10 pts)
