 HOW DID IT OCCUR ?

As we read the review history, March 24,

1989, the Exxon Valdez, who was traveling
outside the normal route to avoid the ice,
hit a coral reef known as Bligh Reef and
spilled about 10.8 million gallons of crude
oil (about 40.9million liters) in the bay of
Prince William Sound in the Gulf of Alaska,
an area known to have an abundant marine
fauna.
CONSECUENSES & WHO DID IT

Thousands of animals died

as a result of the spill,
including approximately
250,000 seabirds and 2,800
sea otters. The cleaning The responsible

 How and why did it occur?
• It is not totally clear the causes of
this accident ,However it is
suspected that a build-up of
pressure in the ultra deepwater ( a
tube that extracts petroleum from
the seabed) caused the explosion
of it and then the oil spill in the
Mexico gulf.

 Consequences:
• The oil penetrates up the structure of the plumage of
birds, reducing its insulating ability, and so making the
birds more vulnerable to temperature.
•
• Marine mammals are affected also like –
Birds ; and the ingestion of oil causes des-

Hydratation and impaired digestion.

It limit the amount of light causing not to allow the



photosynthesis process in marine plants.




 Consequences 2:
• It has a fast expansion and if it reaches the coast it will
kill or contaminate thousands of fish.

• It takes large amount of work, time and money to clean
up the water and most of the times it cant be cleaned
totally.
•

 Who is responsible for this
oil spill?
• Its being investigate who had
officially the fault of the oil spill,
however the explosion came from a
British petroleum company
machine who has committed to
clean the disaster.
