DATO’ HISHAM AL BAKRI
n Under the supervision of JKR (The Public Works Department) and led by
Howard Ashley , DATO’ HISHAM AL BAKRI and the architects Baharuddin
Kasim designed the National Mosque which was built in 1965. constructed
of reinforced concrete with Italian marble finishing, the building is a mixture
of Islamic and Modernist design principles. The asymmetrical and open
plan of the mosque is a breakthrough from the earlier mosques design in
Malaysia. Devoting to the early Modernist principle of ‘form follows function’
, the interior spaces are organized according to the principle function of the
mosque. The first level is designed for prayers and rituals. The lower level
houses the public facilities, such as the administration building for tithes
collection, a clinic, and classrooms for religious instruction.
