WHAT IS A FUNCTION?
 Function is a type of relation in which every object in the
domain as only one image.
 Example

One-to-one relation Many-to-one relation


PROPERTIES OF FUNCTION
 Each object has one and only one image
 Two or more objects may have same image

 Non-images are allowed to be in the codomain

 These are NOT functions

One-to-many relation Many-to-many relation Object (3) has no image


HOW TO WRITE FUNCTION?
 A function can be written by using functional notation

 If a function is given as this, the function will be written


as
f : x  x2 – 3x + 5
 f(x) = x2 – 3x + 5

 A function is read as ‘function f that maps x onto x2 –


3x + 5’
