MATH 446 - EXAM ONE REVIEW

EDWIN MONTUFAR

Definition 1. Argument of complex number:

argz = Argz + 2nπ ; n ∈ Z.

Definition 2. Pricipal value of argz, denoted by Argz, is that unique value φ such that, −π < φ π.

Definition 3. Let U ⊆ C, z0 ∈ U. z0 is said to be an interior point of U if there is ε0 > 0 such that Dε (z0 ) ⊆ U.

Definition 4. Let U ∈ C, z0 ∈ U. z0 is called an exterior point of U if there is ε0 > 0 such that Dε (z0 ) ⊆ C \ U.

Definition 5. z0 is a boundary point of U if z0 is neither an interior or exterior point, that is, there is some ε0 > 0
such that each epsilon neighborhood of z0 contains points from U and from C \ U. The set of all boundary point of
U is denoted as: ∂u.

Definition 6. A set U ⊆ C is called open if it contains no boundary points. That is, U ⊆ C is open ⇔ each point of
U is interior. Another equivalent definition is: U∈ C is open if, for every z0 ∈ U, there is ε0 > 0 such that Dε (z0 ) ⊆ U.

Definition 7. A set F ⊆ C is closed if ∂F ⊆ F. That is, F ⊆ C is closed ⇔ C \ F is open.

Definition 8. Let U ⊆ C. U is called a connected set if any two points of U can be connected by a polygonal line
contained in U.

Definition 9. U ⊆ C is called a domain if U ⊆ C is open and U is connected.

Definition 10. A domain U with its boundary points (maybe not all) is called a region.

Definition 11. A point z0 ∈ C is called an accumulation point of a set G ⊆ C if each deleted neighborhood of z0
contains at least one point of G.

Definition 12. Definition of limit for a complex function: lim f(z) = w0 if for every ε > 0 there corresponds
z→z0
δ = δ(ε, z0 , f) > 0 such that if 0 < |z − z0 | < δ, then |f(z) − w0 | < ε.

Definition 13. A function w = f(z) is continuous at z = z0 if:
(1) z0 ∈ dom(f)
(2) lim f(z) exists
z→z0
(3) lim f(z) = f(z0 )
z→z0

Definition 14. Let f : D ⊆ C → C, and z0 ∈ D. We say that f has a (complex) derivative f (z0 ) at z0 if the
following limit exists:
f(z) − f(z0 )
f (z0 ) = lim .
z→z0 z − z0

Definition 15. Let D ⊆ C and f : D → C. Let z0 ∈ D. w = f(z) is said to be analytic at z0 if there is ε > 0 such
that Dε (z0 ) ⊆ D and f (z) exists, for every z ∈ Dε (z0 ).

Definition 16. An entire function is a function that is analytic at each point in the entire finite plane.
