NEVER C OMPLAIN – 3
If you get all kinds of comforts in a place you will not grow strong. You will get puzzled at a
new place if you cannot get these comforts. Therefore, make the best use of all places. Never
complain of environments. Live in your own mental world.
This world is a relative plane of good and evil. Remember this point at all times. Try to live
happily and peacefully in any place, under any condition. You will then grow to become a strong
and dynamic personality. This is a great secret. Keep it in your pocket and unlock the Elysian
regions, the spiritual realms and the immortal abode. You can get success in any Undertaking
without much difficulty. The practice of regular concentration is a great aid in strengthening the
will.
nature. The practice of thought-culture, memory-culture and concentration are all allied subjects.
Ail these are of immense help in the practice of will-culture.
Gladstone and Napoleon could enter into deep sleep the moment they went to bed, through
mere willing. Mahatma Gandhi also had this ability. They could wake up in the morning at any
time they wanted, to the very minute. They had so trained their subconscious minds. Everyone
should develop this habit through practice of will-culture and become a Gandhi, a Gladstone or a
Napoleon.
C ONSERVE ENERGY – 5
The practice of keeping the mind fully occupied is the best of all exercises for maintaining
physical and mental Brahmacharya. Those who wish to become magnetic and dynamic
personalities or prodigies should utilize every second to the best possible advantage and every
second try to grow mentally, morally and spiritually.
Idle gossiping should be given up entirely. You should realize the value of time. Will is bound
to become dynamic if one utilizes one's time profitably. Application and tenacity, patience and
perseverance, interest and attention, faith and self-reliance can make a man a wonderful world-
figure. The will must be applied according to one's capacity, otherwise it will deteriorate.
PROGRAM OF LIFE – 6
Draw up a program of work or daily routine according to your capacity and see that it is
carried out. Keep only a few items. If you keep several items which cannot be executed in a day,
and which are beyond your capacity, your interest will decline. All the energy will get dissipated
and scattered. You will get brain-fag. Whatever you wish to do daily must be carried out to the
very letter. Work in an organized and systematic manner.
Thinking too much is a hindrance to the execution of the will. It brings procrastination,
diffidence and confusion. There is slackening of the force of the will. The opportunity will slip
away. Think correctly for some time and then decide. As soon as you have resolved, you must
will immediately. There must not be any unnecessary delay. You are bound to achieve success if
you follow these instructions.
BALANCE OF MIND – 7
He who is attempting to develop his will should always try to maintain a cool head. He should
keep a balanced mind under all conditions. He will have to train or discipline the mind.
Balance of mind is one of tile vital characteristics of a developed Yogi. That Yogi who can
maintain a balanced mind at all times is really a strong and happy man. I le gets success in all his
undertakings.
You may fail to maintain the balance in fifty attempts, but from the fifty-first endeavor you
will get strength of will. You will slowly manifest balance of mind. You should not feel
discouraged in the beginning. Remember the story of Bruce and the Spider. Bruce learned from
the spider. He failed seven times but succeeded in the war in his eighth attempt.

BE N OT DIFFIDENT – 10
I want to place before you another important point. I have no such words as "cannot,"
"difficult," "impossible" and "weakness" in my dictionary. Those who are attempting to
strengthen their will-force should remove these words from their dictionary also. These are the
expressions of a weakling. They are the expressions of a timid woman.
Become a lion. Become a spiritual lord. Become a champion in the spiritual field. By mere
willing or chanting of Om mountains should be crushed to powder. By mere willing mountains
should move. By mere willing oceans should recede. By mere willing all the waves of the ocean
should subside. Lord Jesus did this and you, too, can do the same.
IMPORTANCE OF ETHICS – 12
An ethically developed person is more powerful than an intellectual person. Ethical culture
brings various occult powers. If you study the Yoga Sutras, you will find a clear description of the
powers that manifest by the practice of Brahmacharya, truth, Ahimsa, non-stealing and freedom
from covetousness. All kinds of psychic powers roll at the feet of an ethically developed man.
They are ready to serve him.
A philosopher need not necessarily be a moral or ethical man; but a spiritual man must of
necessity be moral. Morality goes hand in hand with spirituality.
MEMORY-CULTURE – 15
Memory-culture is extremely important. It brings success in God-realization as well. A man
with a strong and retentive memory, gets success in all his ventures and undertakings. He can
conduct all iris business affairs very successfully, he can remember his credits and debits and
keep the accounts in a satisfactory manner. Nine-tenths of intelligence is only memory.
A knowledge of the working of the subconscious mind is necessary for those who wish to
develop finer memory. Most mental operations take place in the subconscious mind. The

conscious mind is able to take some rest but the subconscious mind works ceaselessly. It is the
subconscious mind that brings the answer like a flash of lighting in the morning when you fail to
get a solution to a problem the previous night.
PRACTICE INTROSPECTION – 16
Practice self-examination for ten minutes before going to bed. Sit comfortably on a chair.
Close your eyes. Think of all the actions, good and bad, that you did during the day. Think of the
mistakes that you consciously or unconsciously committed in your dealings with others.
On the first day you may not be able to find out even two or three mistakes in your actions
because you are not in the habit of doing introspection. But by regular and systematic practice
you will be able to visualize clearly the actions and mistakes of the day. Even an hour will not be
sufficient to review your actions. The mind becomes subtle and sharp by the practice of
introspection. It gets pure and more concentrated also.
NOW OR NEVER! – 18
Stick to the spiritual path at all cost. Apply your-sell' diligently. Waste not even a single
precious minute, as life is short and time is fleeting. That "tomorrow" will never come.
Now or never! Stand up with a firm resolve: "I will become a Yogi in this very birth, this very
moment." Gird up your loins. Do rigid and constant Sadhana. Walk along the path of Yoga in the
footsteps of saints like Jnana Dev, Gorakhnath, Sadastra Brahman and Trailinga Swami.
Salutations to this great inner ruler, who illumines the mind and the mental factory!

WHAT IS VASANA? – 20
The goal of life is the attainment of knowledge of the Self or realization of the one
homogeneous Self. The knowledge of the Self can only dawn when there is extinction of all
Vasanas or subtle desires. This Self-realization cannot be had without the complete destruction of
all desires. Extinction of all desires alone is liberation.
The subtle state of desire is called Vasana. Desire is gross in its nature. Some philosophers
define Vasana as a tendency or inclination. Others say: "The blind clinging to objects through
intense craving, without deliberation or thinking, is called Vasana."
WHAT IS MIND? – 21
Mind is the cause of bondage and freedom. A mind that is filled with impure desires tends
towards bondage; a mind that is destitute of desires tends towards freedom. Mind is no mind
when all desires are eliminated. When you become free from all distracting thoughts, the mind
becomes quiet and silent, intuition dawns, and you are endowed with the eye of wisdom. You
enjoy great peace.
The mind runs to sensual objects through desires and constant thought of objects. If the
desires perish, the mind ceases thinking of objects and we attain the thought-free state.
C ONTROL OF MIND – 23
One of the commonest habits of the mind is its wandering habit. It cannot stick to one point.
Its nature is like that of air. Sri Krishna says in the Gita: "O mighty-armed Arjuna! the mind is
hard to curb and restless; but it may be curbed through constant practice and dispassion."
The destruction of desires and control of the senses are essential steps towards the control of
the mind. 1t is desire that makes the mind restless. The senses run after objects and the mind also
follows them, just as a dog follows the master. Therefore, if you wish to check this wandering
nature of the mind, you have to renounce all kinds of desires and control the senses first. Then
alone will you be successful in concentration, will-culture, memory-culture, and thought-culture.

HOW TO C ONCENTRATE – 24
The vital point in concentration is to bring the mind to the same point again and again, by
limiting its movements in a small circle in the beginning. That is the main aim. A time will come
when the mind will stick to one point alone.
There should be one line of thought only. There should be continuity of thought, like the
steady flow of oil from one vessel to another, like the continuous sound of a church bell.
You must be very regular in your practice of meditation. You must sit daily both in the
morning and evening at the same hour. The meditative mood will manifest by itself without much
exertion. You must sit in the same place, in the same room. Regularity in meditation is of great
importance and is a sine qua non.
Even if you do not realize any tangible result in the practice, you must plod on with faith,
sincerity, patience, earnestness and perseverance. All your efforts will be crowned with success
after some time. Do not stop this practice even for a day, under any circumstance, even if you are
ailing. Meditation is a first-class tonic. The wave of meditation will remove all sorts of diseases.
It will infuse spiritual strength and give new vigor and vitality.
PRAY FERVENTLY – 25
O all-merciful Lord, through Thy Grace may I realize the Truth! May I always entertain
sublime thoughts! May I realize myself as the Light Divine! May I serve humanity with the
feeling that all forms are Thine! May I be free from greed, lust, egoism, jealousy and hatred! May
I behold the one sweet immortal Self in all beings! May I realise Brahman with pure
understanding!
May the Light of lights ever guide me! May He cleanse my mind of all impurities! May He
inspire me! May He bestow on me power, strength and courage! May He remove the veil of
ignorance from the mind! May He make my life happy and fruitful! I bow to Thee, O God of
gods, O Lord of lords, O Brahman of the Upanishads, support for Maya and Ishwara, the bridge
to immortality!
You yourself are the author of your own fate. You yourself have created your own world. You
yourself are entirely responsible for your destiny. You are the architect of your joys and sorrows.
Just as the spider or the silkworm creates a web or cocoon for its own destruction, so also you
have created this cage of flesh by your own actions, attractions, repulsions and false egoism. You
have become a slave of the flesh, a slave of your body and mind, a slave of countless desires. You
are sunk in the quagmire of deep ignorance.
Weep not, my child. Sorrow not. A glorious and brilliant future is awaiting you. Strive to
come out of this false cage of illusion this very moment. If your attempt is true and sincere, if you
endeavor with all your might to achieve this end, by the ready Grace of the Lord you shall drive
away these dark clouds of ignorance and shine 5n your true divine color, in your native, pristine
glory.
Be Cheerful Always – 28
Be cheerful and happy. Away with depression and gloom. There is nothing that is more
infectious than depression. Drive out the feeling of depression and gloom at once through Self-
enquiry, singing divine songs, prayer, Pranayama, a brisk walk in the open air, and by thinking of
the opposite quality, namely, the feeling of joy. Remember that a positive attitude always
overcomes a negative one.
Live only to be a blessing to others. Feel that all is light and bliss only. Do not allow the mind
to dwell on external objects. Collect all the dissipated rays of the mind. Develop properly your
power of attention and concentration. Be diligent in all that you do. Create interest in
uninteresting tasks and ideas. You will find many mental weaknesses vanishing. The mind will
grow stronger and stronger. You will enjoy perfect peace and happiness.
