2010 Civic Census Overview

1. TOTAL POPULATION: an increase of 6,060 during the past year.

 Calgary’s population grew from 1,065,455 in April 2009 to 1,071,515 in April

2010. This represents an increase of 0.57%. This is the lowest percentage
of growth experienced since 1984 when the city experienced an overall loss
in population.

 Panorama Hills was the only community that had a population increase over
1,000, it increased by 1,455 residents.

 7 communities grew by 100% or more. The substantial percentage growth of

these communities reflects their overall small population. The communities
are:
 Skyview Ranch (2638% or 686 residents),
 Mahogany (2245% or 247 residents),
 Sage Hill (165% or 440 residents),
 Foothills (100% or 285 residents),
 Walden (100% or 210 residents),
 Sunridge (100% or 73 residents) and;
 Legacy (100% or 12 residents)

2. NATURAL INCREASE: natural increase was the only source of growth in the
City from 2009 to 2010.

 Natural increase is a result of the excess of births over deaths. The natural
increase during 2009-2010 was 10,214 persons, up 571 over the previous
period 2008-2009.

3. NET MIGRATION: a decrease of 4,154 people over the past 12 months.

 Net migration is the difference between the number of persons moving into
Calgary and the number moving away.

 Over the past 12 months, 4,154 more people moved away from Calgary than
moved to Calgary. The last time Calgary experienced a negative net
migration was 1992 when the net migration was (-853).

ensure that no individual or dwelling unit can be identified in any of the data
released.

If there are 5 or less residents showing within a community or if there are 10 or less
residents in 20 or fewer dwellings units within a community the data is removed from

Historical Data and Geographies
 For the 2010 Civic Census Results, the new ward boundaries are used. In
practice, the new ward boundaries do not come into effect until October
18, 2010. For details on the ward boundaries, please consult Bylaw
45M2009.

 Historical data reported in the results book is reported against the

boundaries at the time of original data collection. As a result, ward to
ward comparisons are not recommended as there were significant
changes to the ward boundaries in 2010.

 The Community Dwelling Count and Population table for each ward, on
pages 40-67, may not match the corresponding map. At time of print,
the communities were being attributed to current ward boundaries.
Community results for the new ward boundaries will be released at a
future date.
