Video Integration in the Classroom

Name of Video: “The Animaniacs Sing the 50 States Song”

1. What topic(s)/subject(s)/content is this video applicable to?

This video is applicable to Social Studies instruction.

2. What audience and setting would you use this video in?

This video could be used in a fourth grade classroom.

3. Identify three activities that would integrate this video into your curriculum?
(Differentiated Instruction is essential to overall classroom learning).

a. Students will make a list all of the states and capitals that they know as a

brainstorm activity prior to watching the video. They can add to their list while

watching the video two times.

b. Using their list of capitals and states, students will play Capital Catch located at

http://www.kidsgeo.com/geography-games/usa-capitals-map-game.php

c. Given a list of U.S. state names and capitals, students will create their own song,

acrostic poem, or story that incorporates at least 10 of the states. The finished

product will be used to develop student videos or podcasts for presentation.

4. What lesson plan(s)/unit(s) of study could this video be designed around?

This video could be designed around a unit on the Regions of the U.S. It may be used as

a check for prior knowledge or as a review before a final assessment.

5. Which learning theories could be empowered by the use of this video?

There are several learning theories which may be empowered by the use of this video:

• Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences – students who have musical abilities

can appreciate the patterns of the song used in the video. Students with visual-spatial

abilities will be engaged by the use of pictures, maps and colors to illustrate where the

states are located.

• Vygotsky – this video can be used to model ways to remember the states and capitals.

The teacher can use repeated presentations of the video to guide the student’s through

the process of learning and remembering the information.

• Modality Principle of Multimedia Learning – Richard Mayer (1997) developed the

theory that states that students learn best through multimedia that includes animation

and narration, both of which are found in this video.
