REFLECTION IV LEXICAL APPROACH

What ı have understood from lexical approach is that chunks (combination of words)
are an important part of learning language. In this approach we use grammaticalized lexis not
lexicalized grammar. What is that mean is that lexis is basic for learning language not
grammar. In lexical approach, language consist of meaningful chunks. People can
comminucate thanks to chunks and lexis without grammar.Using lexical approach for
teaching language helps students to communication. On the other hand, we use language
holistically, not piece by piece in lexical approach. For this approach Lewis use a model
which is Observe- Hipotesis- Experiment. It is oppesed to Present-Practice-produce paradigm
( generally in our education system we use it) . This approach is so important for students’
using language , but we can’t use in class exactly.

What I can’t understand is that how we use this approach in class exactly. When we help
students for exam like YDS, UDS, we must teach grammar. How we can teach lexis , chunks
and grammar perfectly?

What I need to study again is putting theory into practice. Because I missed some points
from there.

In my opinion Lexical Approach helps students for using language when they have to
speak in target language for communication. I agree with lexical approach’s claims about
using lexis and chunks. Because they help communication. We know grammar , but we can’t
use language. It is a disaster. Because we don’t know which word or chunk is appropriate for
a situation while speaking. I use chunks and different words and their different meaning while
I am teaching language. Because, I think that knowing grammar isn’t knowing language
exactly. If you can’t use a language when you need it, you don’t know a language
