Lesson #5: ELA –Action Heroes

Lesson Description: Students will discuss power distributed throughout the


world, and see what can be done with it.

Objectives:

Knowledge: Students will be exposed Assessment/Evaluation


to what social justice is.
Skills/Abilities: Students will be able -evaluation through final writing
to move through second step of the assignment
writing process.
Affective: SWBAT understand that they -group worksheet-completed,
have the power to do amazing things participation in group work(out of 3)

Materials: powerpoint, projector, conferencing handout, group worksheet

CELS: COM, CCT, PSVS

Set: Status of the Class

Challenge Word:
Social Justice: the idea that everyone
regardless of their life situation, should
have equal rights.
Development: Watch/discuss powerpoint
Open discussion/questions
Students will complete individual
questions
Get students to break into groups to fill
out handout.

Discuss answers on handout.

Wild Mind Writing: what do you feel


after seeing some of the stuff that other
kids have done?
Closure: -ask students if there is anything they
would like to share within their writing.

Professional Development Goal: Ask open ended questions.

Please note good questions as well as some that need improvement/weren’t as


effective.
GROUP questions:
Which of the kids in the slideshow was doing the ‘most important’
social justice work. Why?

Who holds power in our world?

How do they get it?

How can kids your age get power?




INDIVIDUAL questions:
What are some things in your life that you value?
Is this something that everyone values? Why or why not?

What is an effect YOU would like to have on the world?

Social Justice aren’t just big world problems…there are also simple
things you can do in your community. What problems are there in
Regina that you would like to fix?

How might you do this?
